Retailers: PS3 Owners Are Ditching The Platform, Migrating To 360

They're sick of waiting. And now some are crossing over to the other side.

According to a report in EDGE Magazine, retailers in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in Europe are reporting a dramatic increase in the number of customers trading-in PS3 units - either for cash, or, in many instances, toward the purchase of an Xbox 360.

One source in Belgium told the magazine that "just 10 days into the month and already we have an increase of 200 per cent in PS3s coming into the store compared to all of March. Normally we sell them really fast, but not this time. We've only sold 30 to 40 per cent of our inventory right now."

Another retailer speaking to the magazine classified those gamers most put-off by the PSN outage - and thus most willing to defect to the competition - as those involved in the "the hardcore online shooter crowd". Unsurprisingly, there are corresponding reports of mass trade-ins of PS3 copies of titles like Call Of Duty: Black Ops and FIFA Soccer 11, as well as cancellations of pre-orders for Brink—all which rely upon their online component as elements of crucial interest.

These customers might represent only a very extreme (and easily perturbed) portion of Sony's consumer base. But that oughtn't be grounds for assurance - these customers will also be the hardest for the company to win back.

Meh. If anything, it means Sony will be hungrier than ever for our money next time around. I'm sure they've plugged the holes, but capitalism is great.

Good, the only thing that would make big business get their shit together is customers flocking to competitors.

Extremely perturbed? This outage has been going on for a while, you don't have to be perturbed to say "stuff it! xbox!"

This means less c♥ckheads online when it comes back online.

Nailed it in one mate. Only real twats NEED online that much they would ship out and get an xbox just to keep playing BLOPS.

stupid.. since when did online capabilities make up 100% of the fun of the console. its not like the PSN is gonna be down forever either... impatient fools, im gonna go enjoy the sh♥t out of single player god of war. ps3 has some of the best single player gaming there is, screw multiplayer gah

      +1

I'd maybe understand people switching consoles if you actually had to pay for PSN, but considering it's free (barring Playstation Plus) maybe people could eat a brick and harden the hell up. This outage isn't costing you a single cent. Yeah it's inconvenient but so what? If your life is this ruined by a lack of PSN, you have bigger problems than a lack of PSN.

"since when did online capabilities make up 100% of the fun of the console."

I dunno, since developers thought it be a good idea to focus on the multiplayer aspects of games and require internet connection to access content?

I work as a manager of a retail store, and to be honest I haven't seen nearly the amount I was expecting to see of people trading in PS3's. I think Sony's suffering not as much as people want to think they are.

Will be hilarious if hackers go after Xbox live next. :D

Who is stupid enough to sell their PS3 over the PSN outage?! So impatient, perhaps they should invest in taking a walk or doing something productive that isn't video-game associated.

OR play the campaign of a game or finish some games they hadn't previously. I doubt a lot of these articles are accurate anyway, doesn't seem PS3 sales have been affected and if so, not that dramatically. Oh the media...

PS3 is getting dual everyday since the outage which was what? for me 83 days days ago! I had my PS3 in the repair shop. It was back in March of this year. Before that I had it sitting for repair! Because on the 25th Of Christmas 2010 I got the Red Light Of Death! And now count the days as of now absolutely ridiculous! So when will the PSN be restored? I have no clue!

honestly... a month without online gaming is enough for people to spend all that money on a new console/games/peripherals/subscription?

i guess if you are that desperate to play cod (which I bet is exactly why those people are buying entirely new systems), then go for it.

personally i dont care that much. it's actually given me a chance to go back play through the BBC2 campaign and sink my teeth into Yakuza 3, which I bought ages ago but never got around to playing.

For people who can't go 5 minuets without Twitting or Twitching or whatever it is they do now I guess playing through the single player campaigns on all the the games they bought for MP would be a little too much to ask. They're so alone!!!!!

This story has kind of been debunked. Other sites have been calling up their local retailers and finding that it's not a trend.

Usually Edge are better than this, a shame.

COD is full of malnourished A.D.H.D kids who have been screaming non stop since PSN went down.

Reading all these comments it must be exhausting to be a Sony fan boy. Thinking of all those creative reasons why Sony is better off crippled without online support or customers to play games must be hard work.
