Funny – my first reaction was ICO. Whatever it is, the style (and particularly the texturing of the rock) is very similar to Team Ico.

Feels like that – not sure about those trees though – look a bit detailed for early 64

It’s most likely a Duke Nukem Forever screenshot from 2001, since our guest editor today is Duke Nukem.

This is quite possibly the most generic “Remember this?” since its inception, correct me if I’m wrong.
I was leaning towards Shadow of the Collosus due to the leaves on the tree, but after seeing some of the other suggestions I am completely unsure.-
The Insufferable Senor Steengo
I wouldn’t go so far to call it “generic”, anyone who invested a fair amount of time with the game would instantly recognise the skybox and alpha blending on the tree leaves.

Wow, this is a good one Mark/Duke.
I can name about eight games that it might be from. Though just to be different, I’m gonna say GTA: San Andreas, because I don’t think it’s been mentioned yet.
(I don’t think it’s right, though)

So is the lesson for today despite the limited scope of 2D 16-bit graphics the games of yesteryear are more memorable and have a more distinct visual style?
That is to say, we may as well have guesses for every game featuring trees and rocks any time between the years 2002 and 2004 inclusive.

The close in fog just screams Morrowind. Don’t see this level of fog in any other game. Well other than everything on N64. But it’s obviously not Mario 64.

Its definitely TES 3 Morrowind. Its the stone arches near the eastern entrance to the town of Gnisis. If you’ve spent any time up north advancing though the ranks of the Imperial Legions – you’d know..

I’m going with Morowind for this one.
First thing that popped into my head with that tree sprite in the background. -

That’s definately Morrowind, knew as soon as I saw it.
Somewhere along the Bitter Coast region if I’m not mistaken.

Well done, I was going to say Halo CE, Silent Cartographer due to the rock arch and the rocks to the left, but I’m pretty positive there’s no tree there in Halo.

I dont think it matters what it actually is now. The general consensus says it is morrowind, and by the democratic vote, it is.

My first impression was Morrowind. But thinking about it, it looks like it could be just about any FP-RPG from that era.

…and having now read the rest of the comments… and Steverooni’s image link… it’s Morrowind.

Heh. All these people thinking Halo: CEs graphics look this bad are going to really be impressed by the Anniversary edition…
Definitely Morrowind, though it seems redundant to say so now.

I totally thought it was Halo, until i saw the tree.
Then remembered there was no real particle effects in Halo 1 so it couldnt have a sky like that regardless.
I’m going morrowind

Going with Silent Cartographer on Halo CE.
The tree is out of place with Morrowind being the next best but Silent Cartographer was the first one that came to mind. -

I love reading all the “it’s Halo” comments knowing that it’s Morrowind… It’s funny that two games so completely opposite of each other were the two most popular guesses.
I could tell it was Morrowind just from the way the tree looked… but the rock arch did kinda throw me cause I didn’t remember seeing one in Morrowind. My memory gets patchy.

Somewhere in the Shivering Isles of Oblivian was my first thought…..I haven’t played Morrowind.
