Tell Us Dammit

Dammit, we want you to tell us stuff – like what TV shows are you currently watching? Yes, I know Kotaku is about games - but we all engage in other stuff, other media - right? What shows are you watching these days? What are your favourite TV shows of all time?

This isn’t some marketing survey or whatever. It’s an emotional investment in you. Yes, we’re interested in knowing you, Kotaku reader person. You probably know enough about us – more than you even want to, we’re sure. But, hey, we’d like to know about you, too.

I'm currrently watching Mad Men, which I'm totally in love with, but some of my own personal favourites include Deadwood, The Wire and Lost. Yes, I enjoyed Lost!

I also plow through a fair bit of anime when I get the chance, my own personal favourites being Monster, Samurai Champloo and Tenga Toppen Gurren Lagann.

I'm also a huge Naruto fan.

But what about you guys - what are you watching these days, and what are your favourite shows of all time?

    Currently watching?

Well, aside from a few shows that are currently airing in the US (Game of Thrones comes to mind), I'm watching Breaking Bad on DVD in anticipation of the next season (which starts in a bit over a month).

In terms of all time favourite shows, there's a long list.

Breaking Bad is easily in there, as is Arrested Development, Better of Ted, Mythbusters, Top Gear, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Firefly, Dollhouse (mainly for Sierra and Victor in the second season), Community, Justice League/Justice League Unlimited, Band of Brothers, Generation Kill... I should probably stop otherwise this will go on far too long.

Suffice to say, I watch a lot of TV.

Yeah, you know what else was awesome?

      Like AWESOME?!?!

The Pacific.. man i LOVED that show

        Also a good show.

As a matter of fact, if AMC or HBO was behind it, it's a good show. Even Rubicon.

The Pacific wasn't as good as Band of Brothers.

There are many shows I didn't bother listing, but I feel somewhat dirty for not mentioning The West Wing.

Also Futurama, Always Sunny in Philadelphia... no, I must stop listing!

I'm on disc 2 of the 7th series again.
        Freaking love The West Wing.

At the moment i regularly watch... god forgive me... Australia's got talent (WHAT?! It's fun making fun of people and watching people with more talent in their little toe's nail than i'll ever have) and Winners And Losers (WHAT?!?! It's funny!!!!)...
I was watching the Inbetweeners a lot, but thats not on now :(

    My favorites of all time?
    Samurai Pizza Cats
    Neon Genesis: Evangellion
    Bubblegum Crisis: 2030
    RED DWARF!!
    IT Crowd
    Metalocalypse
    Pokemon (yes, shut up!)

ummm and there will be plenty more when i remember them...

      I occasionally watch Neighbours.

I can't tell if Mark is trolling us or not! D:

He's from the British Isles, they take Neighbours totally seriously over there.

Is it actually a joke over there, like it is over here?

Sort of, but it used to be HUGE. They had Neighbours trading cards and what-not.

                TRADING CARDS?!

                *splutters*

"You've activated my trap card! I'm sleeping with your wife!"
                  ">:O"

This week is off the hook, Harold is back!

I thought Harold died ages ago?

            ZOMBIE EPISODE?!?!

Ha! I would totally watch that. Nah, Harold didnt die, but bring back Magde in zombie form. I think Harold is in a gay relationship with that Lou guy now, or maybe he is doing Toadie.

Neon Genesis Evangelion and Bubblegum Crisis for the win. I can't say I agree with you on Winners and Losers though my 'better' half insists on watching it.

We need more anime discussion on here.

Have you seen the Rebuild of Evangelion movies?

I've not! I actually have End of Evangelion floating around somewhere, but I can't bring myself to watch something that depressing...

You haven't watched End of Evangelion either? Tsk tsk, if you like Evangelion you really have to, then go and get the new movies Evangelion 1.0 is out in Aus, I'm not sure if 2.0 is on dvd yet overseas or not, but it isn't here yet.

They are a retelling of the story from the start with a much more 'focused' storyline. It's a little less confusing a little more plot and character centric so new-comers don't get left behind. Much bigger budget though and by the end of the second movie it has diverged from the original storyline significantly, but in a really positive way.

If I ever bother watching the human drivel that now infests human television nowadays, I'd say Big Bang Theory is the one show I'd stop gaming to watch.

I loathe this show with a fierce, burning passion. I don't even know if it's correct of me to do so, as the justifications I have are pretty slim, but it evokes such a dark and wrathful ire whenever I see even a 30-second spot for it.

      Watch Better Off Ted instead!

Yeah that was an awesome show. Too bad it got cancelled after two seasons. Never got the ratings it deserved.

I don't take it seriously at all, and it makes me laugh, it's enough for me to stop feeling depressed and alone all the time so that justifies me watching it. Anything that makes me smile like Big Bang Theory is worth my attention :)

I'm with you. Big Bang Theory is just such a formulaic, lazy comedy and the laugh track bugs the hell out of me (I know it's a studio audience, I don't particularly care). Better of Ted is much better, shame it only ran two seasons.

There are a million billion shows I've watched and adore, so I'll stick to what I'm currently watching.

Game of Thrones and Dr Who are the only live-action tv shows I can be bothered watching these days.

I watch a lot of anime, though. The usual, brain-dead but fun stuff like Bleach and Naruto, but also at the moment Blue Exorcist, Tiger & Bunny (so cheesy :3), and I've just watched the simply excellent Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Everyone should watch that~

Game of Thrones is fantastic. I love fantasy/medieval settings but hate the way they are treated. Like Merlin for instance, not only does it ruin a perfectly good storyline of King Arthur and Merlin and the Knights of the Round Table the show itself is just horrible. It gives a bad name to fantasy and medieval settings.

Now Game of Thrones is probaby the highest quality fantasy/medieval show I have ever seen. Beyond that it is one of the best shows I have seen in any setting. I think every part of it is just done to such a high quality and polish, I can see this becoming one of my all time favourite shows.

A lot of my friends have fallen in love with it too and we often talk about what's going on, where it's going, who's going to betray whom.

Watching Mad Men, Sons of Anarchy, Harvey Birdman, Futurama and Buffy (again). Also Im in the routine of watching Hercules with Kevin Sorbo in the afternoon...ITS JUST ON WHEN I GET HOME OK?!

      Harvey Birdman is freakin great.

Yes, yes it is! One of the best comedies I've ever seen, if you have even a remote taste for absurdism.

OH! I forgot that I'm watching Flight of the Conchords for about the 23rd time!

Naruto for me too! (Can't believe noone went in to my office to see my figurine collection on Sunday!! what a terrible host I am! Either that or we were just having too much fun!!)

I started Joan watching the 90's animated x-men series last night! She's loving it! Bringing back a lot of memories for me too of early morning cheese tv viewing!
Apart from that, the regular viewing that goes on in our house atm is pretty much master chef, vampire diaries for the mrs, Heston's Feasts and Joan's also in to No Ordinary Family.

Arrested Development and Curb Your Enthusiasm. The only two TV shows I can watch repeatedly for all time.

The arrested development episode with the one-armed guy is amazing.

        Every episode is amazing.

The only ep. I've seen is when he throws a dove into the ocean and yells "go back from whence you came!" and I pissed myself.

*"Return from whence you came" is what he says :P
Not meaning to troll, it's just my favourite show of all time! And if that's the only ep you have seen, do yourself a favour and buy the 3 season boxset and be prepared to wet yourself constantly. Maybe buy and adult diaper at the same time...

That being said, I actually saw the pilot episode on ABC1 or 2 about 2 nights ago at around 10pm. So maybe ABC has picked up the rights to show re-runs over here.

    Currently watching Game of Thrones.

Waiting for new seasons of The Office, Big Bang Theory, Community, Dexter, True Blood, Top Gear and 30 Rock.

As for all time favourite? Arrested Development. Or Firefly.

Most of my favourite are off the air at the moment but Doctor Who, Chuck, Community, Firefly, Fringe are among my top favourites. Currently watching the new Season of Primeval, and also just started watching Archer, which has been hilarious so far.

Reliving my childhood by purchasing the entire Thunderbirds collection, looking forward to chewing my way through those.

Currently sitting around waiting for season 2 of The Walking Dead *twiddles thumbs*

Thought the last ep of season 1 was a bit dumb, but liked this show.

Agreed Mark, was fine with the detachments from the comics so far, but the last episode was really grinding.

Yeah, I thought season 1 started out brilliantly... got a bit shaky in places as it went on, but overall it was great. That's probably the plus side of having such a short (6 episode) season. It gives them time to stop and reassess where they're going before it goes completely off the rails, so hopefully season 2 will be back up there with the best of season 1.

BTW Mark - I thought you were sick of zombies? Or does that only apply to games?

My brother was raving about the show, and the first couple of eps were amazing. I'll keep watching it I reckon.

I had a lot of friends raving about the show too, that it was a great and realistic zombie show. It started off alright (though I find the opening in the hospital pretty cliche'd) but that last episode was terrible. I really didn't like anything about it.

I have heard that that episode doesn't follow the comic, and I think some other stuff that I didn't like isn't in the comic either, so hopefully season 2 will pick up a bit.

At the moment I don't quite see what people see in the show. I think I would have liked it more if he spent more time alone at the start, make it more like a single person fending for themself in the apocalypse.

Loving Archer at the moment. Also Treme and Game of Thrones when I can get them.

Deadwood and the Wire are the best I have seen

I very rarely watch broadcast TV anymore. I have... other means. We are watching Angry Boys at the moment though.

    Favorite TV Shows:
Star Trek TNG! almost done watching the complete series atm.

    Deadwood
Battlestar Galactica, yeah the new one.

MYTHBUSTERS - cause I am the love-child of Jamie and Adam. Seriously, go look at my profile picture on Facebook.

    Dirty Jobs

House - season 1. I freakin loved the first season or two of that show. Went downhill dramatically though.

Other fairly standard stuff like the Simpsons and Family Guy, but its more as filler cultural-currency I enjoy but doesn't actually satisfy the 'I want a good story now' thing.

OMFG I forgot MASH, someone mentioned it below. I have the whole series on DVD, in the 3 packs. It takes up like 1/2 my available DVD storage.

    Mythbusters
    Time Team
    Red Dwarf
    Doctor Who (Jon Pertwee +)
    Star Trek - TOS
    Futurama
    Grand Designs
    Black Books
    American Dad

The Shield is my fave show ever. Other top contenders include Yes Minister, MASH, Farscape, Firefly.

I tend to watch TV with my wife, so have learned to love Friends, Dharma and Greg, Raising Hope, etc. Surprised by how enjoyable Gilmore Girls was, we've watched that more than once.

Right now I'm plowing through ANOTHER playthrough of Dragonball Z S1-9, getting keen for Season 2 of Better Off Ted, and every so often indulging myself in an ep of Powerpuff Girls Z.

I don't really watch TV anymore due to my fluctuating social hours, so I'm happy living in the past watching Hey Arnold!, Rocko's Modern Life, CatDog, Earthworm Jim, etc.

You could probably guess how old I am based on that last paragraph...

The inbetweeners: How awesome is this show, for those of you who haven't watched it is about 4 teenage boys who live in england and its ridiculously funny

DR WHO: Probably my favourite show at the moment can't get enough of that doctor.

Pretty Little Liars: A pretty good mystery thriller based on a bunch of books. Watched it cause a freind suggested it and got hooked.

    Favourite ever:

The office: You can call me a girl but i nearly cried when michael leaves the office. This show has been genuinely funny for 7 seasons. You also start to gain a emotionally attachment to all the characters. Including the one who only play minor roles. Yes i have watched the british version, yes ricky gervais is the funniest man ever but i still like the american version better.

      The inbetweeners...
I'm frothing at the gash just thinking about it.

Oh, Mark, you get incalculably enormous points for liking Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. I think I've said that before, but it bears repeating.

    http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TengenToppaGurrenLagann

Enjoy this link, and never mind that I just chewed up three hours of your time...

    Currently watching:

    Star Wars: The Clone Wars
    Doctor Who
    House
    Stargate Universe
    Law and Order: SVU
    Merlin

Currently watching: Game of Thrones, Treme and Seinfeld

All-time favourites: The Sopranos, Oz, Band of Brothers, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Shield, Seinfeld

I was watching How I Met Your Mother, Chuck and Community but now they've all finished I only really seem to be watching Q and A and other random stuff of ABC iview. Can't wait till Breaking Bad comes back and Dexter too.

At the moment, I'd have to say my favouritist everest show is Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job. I find the surreal nature of their anti-humour both addictive and enchanting.
Other faves include Deadwood, Rome, and Breaking Bad.

Also, on the anime thing, can someone reccomend me some titles? I fall in and out of love with anime over the course of several years s lose touch.
To give you an idea, my faves are FLCL, Cowboy Bebop, Ranma 1/2, and Gurren Lagann. I need somethign new though...

The wife and I have been watching heaps of TV-on-DVD this year. It's our nightly after-work tradition.

    So far we've watched:

Season 1-5 How I met Your Mother
    Season 1-3 Chuck
Season 1 of Legend of the Seeker
    Season 4 of Heroes

We're currently watching Season 1 of Breaking Bad, and it is amazing. We're also trying to get through all of Naruto. But having playing through all of the Ultimate Ninja games, I already the story.

The games don't compare to the series. Though you will know all of the major plot point so they are kind of spoiled, the fights in the series are generally a lot more complex and interesting, as there is only so much you can do in the games. I was pretty disappointed with Ultimate Ninja Storm 2.

However I read the manga more than watch the anime now, so I'm probably a little elitist :p

You win 2 points for mentioning The Wire.

At the moment only really watching Game of Thrones. Eagerly awaiting the return of True Blood and Breaking Bad.

Also everyone should check out Spartacus.

I'm on a Fringe bender at the moment. I have watched Season 1 and 2 in the past few weeks.

    Other than that its supernatural (though I am losing interest), how I met your Mother or big bang theory;
...and I Cant wait till Dexter is back.

My all timer guilty pleasures though are Family Guy and American Dad.

Wow not much Breaking Bad love around here

    that show is AMAZING

    And I too enjoyed Lost

I also LOVE Breaking Bad. It's a bit slow and I can see why a lot of people wouldn't like it, but I can't wait for the next season to start.
