Will Mass Effect 3 Really Be ‘Better With Kinect’?

Looks like Commander Shepard may be taking Microsoft’s motion controller into battle in Mass Effect 3. How do we know? Because the box art for the Xbox 360 version of the game claims this Mass Effect will be “better” with Kinect.

That heretofore unseen artwork was uploaded to EA’s online store earlier today, then swapped out with something less feature-revealing. (Incidentally, the Kinect branded one is still up here when we published.) Kinect support for Mass Effect 3 is not a bullet point we’ve heard officially from Electronic Arts or BioWare, but it’s looking like optional motion or voice control is due to be announced soon, likely at E3 2011.

Mass Effect 3 isn’t the only game rumoured to feature unexpected Kinect support. Last week, box art for Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier boasted the same “better with Kinect” branding.

EA recently announced a delay to Mass Effect 3, which is now expected in early 2012. At the time, CEO John Riccitiello explained that BioWare was “adjusting some of the gameplay mechanics and some of the features that you’ll see at E3 that can put this into a genre equivalent of shooter meets RPG.”

Last year, BioWare’s Greg Zeschuk told GamesIndustry.biz said the company was looking at motion control in terms of how it could fit with Mass Effect.

“What can we actually do in a game like Mass Effect? Can we create a greater sense of immersion during conversations by using gestures?” Zeschuk said. “I think we probably could and I think that’s where we’ll explore. We’re not going to do a party game, we’re not going to do Dance Dance Krogan for Mass Effect. The reality is it’s going to have a really positive impact.”

“There’s that impediment of a controller but hardcore gamers are never going to give that up. It might be nice to see a hybrid of a controller used with additional gesture on the side for immersive elements. So we’ll see it go from family entertainment and then broaden out.”

Compatible with Kinect ? God sake tells me it’s bull****… [Bioware Forums]

  • Hou~ Give me a Minority Report GUI and I’ll be pleased. Hard to think of anything else useful, especially given that MS gave up on voice commands in Australia.

    • I was at a media conference earlier in the year and MS had a keynote speaker from the gaming division. I spoke to him after the event and he promised speech recognition was still coming and it would arrive in “Winter 2011”.

  • Honestly, I would play the f*ck out of DANCE DANCE KROGAN.

    Just for the name alone…

To be told this will never happen is a real kick in the quads…

  • At the end of the day, you don’t HAVE to play with kinect right? AT least it’ll give kinect owners a new way to experience the game, even if it’s bad.

Does this mean they’ll be shoehorning some Move control options on the PS3 version?

  • I think trying to combine a controller based control system with a movement based control system isn’t going to work out very well. It reminds me of the problems with quick time events, that you don’t know when their coming so either you have to be ready at all times or you will miss them.

When they do come up you take a second to realise what you are supposed to be doing, it will be the same with any gestures. A symbol will come up on screen and you’ll spend the first moment or two remembering what that means. I think it will only serve to take you out of the immersion.

  • Just like the rumoured multiplayer component of Mass Effect 3, I’m taking the stance that as long as they don’t mess with what made Mass Effect great (ie, fantastic, compelling single player narrative / action) I don’t care what else they add to the game.

If Bioware wants to add Kinect functionality, sure. Just make it an alternate way of control, not a compulsory control method.

Just like Multiplayer. Drop in / drop out co-op with extra squad members would be amazing. As would a functional multiplayer mode. Just don’t do a Resident Evil 5 and add the co-op functionality at the expense of a great single player experience.

  • It could be a cool little addition.

If you could do a regroup command by waving your finger in the air, or embrace eternity with Liara by waving your…

    …never mind.

  • I can see it now, Shepard is staring down the Reapers. He only has his assault rifle and his own determination. Then all of sudden…DANCE DANCE KROGAN! Destroyin the Reapers through the majesty of dance!

  • Ah man, I’m a whore for good box art and that box art is even worse than the ME2 one, and that purple strip just makes me cringe… Am I looking into this too much?

  • I highly doubt it’ll be a predominent aspect or even compulsory. I could see it being used as an optional method for navigating computer screens maybe, give it that true sci-fi feel. Perhaps as a feature involving biotics or something similar.

Either way, let’s just wait and see.

  • So long as we aren’t forced to use it, then I don’t care. It really would ruin the game for me if I had to use kinect, i just don’t have the space in my lounge

  • Skittles! Skittles!

  • Considering that ME3 is also coming out on PC, it would be fair to say that any motion control would be completely optional and its absence would in no way detract from the product as a whole.
Unless, of course, they are developing the PC version compltely independant of the console version, in which case I say put all the motion control in the console version they want.

  • This is going to sound grossly hypocritical, but I’m concerned about how they’re going to fit it in…

I guess if it’s optional and can be done otherwise with a controller, it shouldn’t be a problem.

For people who like Kinect this might even be a good thing.

  • Don’t you think Bioware would know for a fact that Mass Effect fans would react to this with involuntary, hysterical screams just like when Homer saw that photo of Patty & Selma after Chief Wiggum said “Head down to the DMV. These two broads should help you out” while he was a limo driver for Mel Brooks?

  • Bioware had better not waste time and disc space cramming this in.

(Disc space gets a mention due to the ME2 cut-in-half that wasn’t originally planned)

  • I’ll be playing it on PC, but concerned the whole game will be dumbed down because of a gimmick. Great series don’t stuff it up. Bioware you lost a life with DA2, don’t go losing anymore.

  • It’d be good to see it used for menus and issuing squad commands.

Although I do insist that “dance dance Krogan” be a hidden voice command that causes all Krogans in the area to dance, disco balls to descend and catchy J-pop music to start.

  • If ‘Dance Dance Krogan’ had a story mode, it’d probably go like this:

Also, I can’t stop them from NOT putting Kinect features in (or whatever else they want). So as long as these features are optional and any extra effort put into them don’t derail the focus from the single-player gameplay & storyline then I guess I’m content. (Oh, and if there is multi-player, don’t make achievements for it. I really hate multi-player achievements.)

    • Although highly unlikely, looking at the shape of the computer thing (God, I forgot the name, I should replay ME2 again soon), its shaped more like a blade and less like a giant blowing gauntlet. Maybe a hint at one of the new melee mechanics?

  • I personally think this would be great in combat situations. Stretching your arm out to the right to curve a Pull or cocking an imaginary gun for Incineration would be really fun or having boxing matches with Mechs with their improvements of melee. Unnecessarily slow, but fun, especially drunk.

  • All they need to put on the box is Kinect ONLY and will personally visit EA and smash every single person in the face.

Ok enough of this gimmick, stop shoehorning it into every game, get over it and lets get back to precision controls with buttons.

Hey why not work on a better controler for hard core fans?
