Would This Have Been A Better Duke Nukem Forever?

While my review is forthcoming, it's no spoiler that Duke Nukem Forever isn't a Game of the Year contender. Question is, though, what game are we judging?

Because the one we are playing clearly isn't finished. Leaving us to wonder, what game might we have been left with were 3D Realms able to actually complete their initial vision?

Maybe something like this. This concept art by Feng Zhu, completed for developers 3D Realms around the time of 2003-2004, shows a world far more detailed and easy on the eye than the "finished" product's bland levels, along with some cool designs for human soldiers and alien opponents that you never see in the game.

Some stuff did manage to make it into the final game, however, including Zhu's take on the "Impregnator", one of the finished game's more questionable inclusions. Note that one of the pieces of art in the gallery above shows the beast at work, and as such, isn't very suitable for work.

Impregnators? Totally ripping off the proposed Vagoo Crabs for Half Life 3....

The only shots there that made me go "maybe" were the ones in the alien space ship. That's the one environment I was disappointed to not see in DNF... saving it for DLC maybe? I remember that happening in Fable 2, the one environment what wasn't accounted for from Fable 1... Knothole Glade... predictably came later on as a downloadable.

That would have been so much more impressive. DNF just felt like a sub-par remake of Duke 3D.

you clearly haven't played DN3D if that's what you think.

While this concept art is cool, there is no use in going "If only they did it this way!" "Oh man missed opportunities!"

    etc etc

Almost every game has this fantastic concept art made in droves for its initial ideation and prototyping, with much of it left on the cutting room floor. My point is that it doesn't matter if you think what they thought up before is subjectively better than what they made and whether the decisions were poor or not, I could reach into almost any game studios unused concept folio and pull out the "Dreamtime awesome Duke Nukem that we're all supposedly missing."

Oh please give it a rest with the 'what ifs'. The concept art stuff is irrelivent and would have made no difference to the game other than to have extra models in the game that you all would have still given out about. And regarding the space station images: chances are they weren't game engine renders. They would have likely looked just as disappointing to you all once they were made in the playable engine.

it would have been nice to have the extra outer space levels, but oh well.

DNF is what it is. If you don't like, don't play it.
