Dry July? Pfft… It’s Shameless Gaming Month

Plenty of folks I know are doing Dry July – in fact our night editor, the charming and glamorous Elly Hart, is doing Dry July. Me? Well, I don’t drink, so I’m indulging in an activity a number of Kotaku regulars are taking part in – Shameless Gaming Month.

We all have a pile of shame, a number of games we haven’t finished, or even bothered starting. New games come out, we get excited, buy into the hype and watch as the other games we’ve yet to finish get thrown back on the shelf – ignored… abandoned.

Kotaku reader Trjn had a pile of shame, a pretty epic one at that. He decided to do something about it.

July provides us with a month where the supply of new games runs short and the end of financial year sales have ended. That also means that we have a month where we can sit down and make a molehill out of the mountain that is our pile of shame.

There aren’t any particular rules to this endeavour, but the general idea is reasonably simple: play as many games to completion as you can in the month of July.

For the sake of simplicity, completing a game means playing it until you are satisfied that you’re done. That might mean getting a platinum trophy or 1000 gamerscore for it, playing out the single player campaign through to the end credits or simply playing the game up until the point that you want to hurl that disc into the centre of the sun never to be thought of again.

Let us know what games are in your pile of shame and what you’re trying to play as the month progresses. If many people are playing the same game, we can form something not entirely unlike a book club where we can discuss the fun being had by all and sundry.

I fully support this endeavour. I have my own pile of shame which currently includes…

Half-Life 2, Darksiders, Dead Space 2, Metroid Prime 3, inFamous 2, inFamous, LittleBigPlanet 2, Kirby’s Epic Yarn, Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, Fallout: New Vegas, Dragon Age 2…

Oh man. I literally could be here all night.

Point being – let’s get our pile of shame down to a manageable level, and let’s do it together!

Until the end of July, I’ll be dropping in a post of my own personal progress every Tuesday until the end of July, and I’d like to invite you all to participate in the comments section.

Let’s get this thing done!

Are you guys up for taking part? What games do you have in your own pile of shame? Let us know in the comments below.
