Losing the entire PlayStation Network service for 23 days and its online marketplace for more than a month is not many people’s idea of a good time. Nor is it Tim Schaff’s, though the Sony Network Entertainment boss called it “a great experience,” at a forum before, as the politicians say, he revised and extended his remarks.
“I would not like to do it again. One time was enough. Great learning experience,” Schaff said at GamesBeat 2011, which is sponsored by VentureBeat.
Schaff said Sony was initially concerned that the massive data breach—one of history’s largest—was an attack that was “all about Sony,” but later the company took some comfort from the fact that others ended up targeted in a spring noted for major cyberattacks.
“In the beginning we were very concerned that we were the focal point for this attack, and it was all about Sony, and what was Sony doing,” he said. “But over time, the company learned that a wide variety of sites had been hit, including government institutions and other companies.”
