Dr. J Joins Magic And Michael In NBA 2K12’s ‘Greatest’ Challenge

NBA 2K12 will follow last year’s extremely popular “Jordan Challenge” by again reaching deep into the game’s memory bank, serving up 15 re-creations of the NBA’s greatest performances with an all-new cast of legends, and broadcast presentation authentic to their eras.

“NBA’s Greatest” will bring ABA/NBA all-time great Julius Erving to a simulation basketball game; the Philadelphia 76ers superstar has long been featured in arcade titles, never on an official roster with his own team in a sim. Dr. J will be joined by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, as well as Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and Michael Jordan, who will star on three distinct covers when NBA 2K12 releases Oct. 4.

As for the other 10 players, 2K Sports isn’t saying just yet. They want fans to talk about this and debate who deserves inclusion before doling out the full reveal.

“One of the things we’re proud of with this franchise is we’ve transcended the whole video-game thing a bit; we’ve become more of the conversation and the fabric of the NBA,” said Jason Argent, the 2K Sports vice president of marketing. “We want to be involved with the debate and the conversation surrounding the NBA’s culture. Specifically, the age-old debate of what would happen if this year’s world champion Mavericks played one of the old Jordan Bulls teams. Or if Jordan’s Bulls played Kobe and the Lakers. It’s a conversation going on in bars and barbershops.”

“NBA’s Greatest” diverges from “The Jordan Challenge” in that fans must unlock the teams and players for use in the main game’s roster by completing the games. The historic teams of “The Jordan Challenge” were available in all modes of NBA 2K11 from the beginning; completing the Challenge unlocked Jordan himself for the game’s “My Player” career mode.

Argent wasn’t saying exactly what games would be re-created. Five screenshots unveiled show Erving in action against the Celtics (also Kareem against the Bulls, Jordan against the Lakers, and Magic and Bird against each other), and don’t really tip off what might be coming. Dr. J’s iconic baseline reverse layup came against the Lakers in the 1980 NBA Finals; with Magic and Kareem signed on, that game conceivably could be featured.

Also, “The Jordan Challenge” last year added period-authentic touches on the players, from hi-top fades to nuthugger shorts, but delivered the game with the standard, modern 2K Sports broadcast package. This time, Argent said, players can expect a retro look and feel for the classic games.

“Just like all of the fun stuff people reacted to last year, we’ll have the short shorts and the ‘fros,” Argent said, “and each one will be broadcast as it appeared in that era, whether that’s a technicolor look in the 1980s or black-and-white in the 1960s.” Additional touches, such as wipes, graphics and replays, will feel authentic to the times.

But Argent wasn’t budging when asked for more details about the players and games; they want to let this percolate before giving that up.

Also, many fans suggested that the historic recreations brought up in “The Jordan Challenge” would be perfect as a downloadable content series. Asked directly about DLC plans, Argent said only, “More to come on that.”

Argent was similarly coy last year when asked about DLC for NBA 2K11, and nothing ever came of it. This year, however, NBA 2K12 is offering pre-order bonus teams, so there are at least two extra squads floating out there who are not on the disc at launch.

  • I really think this is going to be the best game ever made bringing old school back to the games I like NBA 2k11 because it was the first with Michael Jordan on it and he’s my favorite of all time and I was very happy when I heard mj was going to be on 2k11 and now with jordan johnson and bird and many more on 2k12 I. Think it will be better than last year definitely with legends being on the game I can’t wait for October 4 I got all 3 covers pre ordered at Gamestop that how excited I am

  • I was waiting for 2K11 to come down in price a bit, but now I’m considering just hanging on for this one. Damn these annual franchises and my eternal infernal indecision!

LOOK up nba 2k12 wishlist.then click on the nba dimensions thing…then go to second page, seventh one/youll be impressed..its what 2k should be

  • I just wanted to say first that this is wonderful news.

The one thing that I cherished most about NBA 2K11 was not only the gameplay (which is fantastic) but the ability to play with the classic teams. I do not make use of any of the other features (My Player, 3-point shootout, etc).. in fact, I rarely play with any of the modern teams – nor do any of my friends.

Why not? For a couple reasons. First, the modern NBA era is not nearly as compelling or dynamic as it was in the 80s and 90s. Not to mention, we have very few of the legendary types that existed in the 60s and 70s… during that time, there were MANY legends and hall-of-famers… often time on a single team (e.g. early 70s Lakers and Knicks, 80s Lakers, Celtics, Rockets, Sixers).

That being said if 2K Sports can do anything more in that direction, that would be wonderful. My friends OFTEN debate the greatest of all-time. We love having that same conversation that was mentioned in the article above… and being able to play that out with 2K11 has been fantastic… but all along we have been DYING FOR MORE!!! DLC with Kareem and Dr. J… and not just the often mentioned Sixers 83 team! He had so many great ones including 77 and 80.

That being said, I would hope that if they choose 15 stars to have legendary moments, I would rather see them take 10 and do 2 or 3 moments each. I think that is a much more valuable experience.

I would hope as well that they do not include things that aren’t as noteworthy. For example, Jordan scoring 63 is Boston was a huge moment… however, scoring 69 against the Cavs… I mean… the Bulls won the game, but how critical or important with regard to NBA History was that game? or how important was David Robinson’s 71 on the last day of the season in 94 to capture the NBA Scoring title? The answer: not very important.

I hope 2K can hear from the fans and can incorporate things like the 1977 Portland team who came back from 2-0 down to beat Dr. J and the Sixers by winning 4 straight. Or the amazing run in 1994 that the Houston Rockets went on to win the title in an AMAZING 7-game series against the Knicks… the same Knicks team that took the bulls to 7 games 2 years earlier and featured an OUTSTANDING roster (much better than the rumored 99 Knicks who had guys like Larry Johnson, Sprewell, and Allen Houston… ? really NYK fans you want that team and not the one with a younger dominant Ewing and Starks, Derek Harper, Charles Smith, Pat Ewing, Charlie Ward, Rolando Blackman, etc)… the 1994 finals would be insane.

Also, 3-4 teams each for the Lakers and Celtics from the 80s would be OUTSTANDING!

My friends and I have noted that the 86 Celtics – widely considered to be the greatest team of all-time – are VERY poorly represented on NBA2K11. They are slow, inconsistent, etc… Bird is very hard to score with and they all move like they are wearing cement blocks for shoes… 2KSports… cmon guys, hit up Amazon.com and snag the 86 Finals DVD set – that team is amazing.

Including the 86 Rockets would also be and incredible coop… that team had one of the most enigmatic duos of all-time with Ralph Sampson and Akeem… and they played the 86 Celtics very well.

I could go on and on… there are so many great historic teams… and though I appreciate the addition of special modern teams (such as the 2002 Sacramento Kings), teams like that pale in comparison to teams like the 71 Lakers, 70 Knicks, 86 and 94 Rockets, and so forth.

A good rule of thumb when choosing a classic team, 2KSports, referrence the Hall-of-Fame roster… there are no Hall-of-Famers on that Kings team… in fact I dont think there is a Hall of Famer at all from Sacramento in the History of the Franchise…

Lastly… PLEASE DO NOT FORGET THE 1970s!!!

CMON 2K… Make this the greatest game of all time… even if you have to do DLC… I would gladly pay 5 bucks each for all of the teams listed above!!!

  • Really looking forward to this. Perfect time to go old school with the lockout…and cant wait for new details on my player (more difficulty and real contracts please!). Im glad 2K seems to be going for the knockout punch on EA rather than just resting on its laurels.

  • So many legends that 2k could take advantage of here, hoping for Malone, Ewing, Barkley and many others to make an appearance.
