Halo 4's Artistic Direction Is Massive, Mysterious

This morning's Halo 4 panel at PAX Prime was dispiritingly light on details. (Sample exchange: "How will the game play?" "It will play like Halo.") But the folks at 343 Industries did close out with a neat concept-art video, which I've posted above.

While specific details on the game were scarse, the panelists were clear that Halo 4 will dig deeper into the character of John (a.k.a. Master Chief). Art director Kenneth Scott said that the Master Chief seen in the teaser trailer would not be the final Chief in the game; they're on iteration number 4. "We know how important Chief is to fans. When people play Halo 4, we want them to have that feeling that "I'm a bioengineered super soldier wearing 800 pounds of tank and jet fighter."

Prompted by an audience question, Frank O'Connor confirmed that there were no plans to include a Halo 4 beta with disc purchases of the increasingly promising-looking Halo: Anniversary .

Scott came back to underline how hard the art team at 343 industries was working to capture the awe and mystery of the Halo universe, the initial mystery of discovery that players felt when playing Halo: Combat Evolved. That video captures that for me—objects in space, massive beyond comprehension, ancient and unknowable.

Oh, Halo. Every time I think I'm sick of you, you remind me why I like you so much.

If it can recapture the sense of discovery and mystery of the first game, it'll be great.

Seems to capture the feel of Halo Wars... in fact this could have been concept art for that...

Not that I'm complaining, but I reckon I heard the music of X-Files, Social Network and Tron: Legacy all at once.

      Also the sound from Inception....hmm

AS long as they take it too new worlds, new story and new races, dont wanna see another elite or gorilla ever again, and no "the enemy you defeated has somehow survived" bullshit...

The first inkling of Flood and I'm out.

Then you should be out already, 'cause I saw Flood tendrils on some of those space hulks.

I missed the Flood in Reach. It would have been absolutely inconguous, but it didn't feel like a proper HALO game without flood...and long library scenes.

I will bet $50 bucks that a grunt will be hidden in the game somewhere as an easter egg, and it will be glorious.

        Hrmmm, "$50 bucks"....
        Fifty dollars bucks?

        oh well.

Was that concept art for Halo or a Metroid/Mass Effect mash up?!?!?! I'm seeing a strong change in vibe here and I like it.

No beta packaged with Halo:CE Anniversary? I miss bungie.

Halo? Playing like Halo? Holy shit!

I don't care what anyone says, every Halo games has nailed that perfect blend of sandbox firefights, epic storylines and a great aesthetic direction.

Hopefully 343 continues that great tradition.
