New Counter-Strike Hits PS3, Xbox 360, Mac, PC In Early 2012

The Counter-Strike: Global Offensive rumours were true. Valve Software announced the game today and already added a listing for it to Steam.

In a press release, Valve said that "CS: GO features new maps, characters, and weapons and delivers updated versions of the classic CS content (de_dust, etc.). In addition, CS: GO will introduce new gameplay modes, matchmaking, leader boards, and more."

The team-based shooter game is "targeted" for an early 2012 release on the Xbox 360's Xbox Live Arcade, the PlayStation 3's PlayStation Network, Mac and PC in early 2012.

"Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999," Valve spokesman Doug Lombardi said in today's announcement. "For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS' award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac."

The game is being co-developed by Valve and Hidden Path Entertainment (the latter of whom worked with Valve on updates to Counter-Strike: Source, the game's most recent major release) and will be playable at PAX Prime in two weeks in Seattle as well as at the Eurogamer Expo in late September.

Interesting. I wonder what those Valve protesters are thinking right now. They were demanding a long-lost sequel from Valve, weren't they?

I wonder if they'll keep the oldschool kill for cash and buy guns system or if they'll implement something akin to the more recent shooters of today.

yea that is a mystery right now. And also, will they keep the fast pace FPS gameplay or will they change it into more COD and BF style gameplay?

They should keep the health packs and the classic stuff from CSS. CoD gameplay may be more 'realistic' in some ways, but who gives a shit, right? This game is about having fun. Optimize the fun, not the realism <3

No mention of using a new engine? Come on valve, bring out Source 2.0!

However I fear if they're putting it on consoles, it's going to be using the same god damned engine, cause the console plebs will pay $$$.

The Source engine is modular and the entire point of it is to not have to start from scratch again.

Valve updates to the engine are iterative, they won't make a Source 2.0, they just keep altering small chunks of the code to make it better.

in my opinion they will still have an exact clone of the original game, just with an updated engine and added weapons, simply because counter strike is a huge game for professional competitive gaming.

i do predict however that they will add new game modes and such and have a better mod platform then sourcemod/metamod and release the game with official mods most likely being zombiehorde/gun game

I'm guessing one of the "new" game modes will most likely be the 'VIP Mode' from the original CS which they never included in CSS anyway.

y would you buy CS on console anyway. you would have to be brain dead to do it. VIP Mode was beast. loved a bit of as_oilrig

"gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac" makes it sound like the franchise is new to consoles and mac. It was on the Xbox years ago and has been out on macos for quite some time

I can't imagine playing Counter-Strike on a console. I tried playing Half-Life 2 on my dad's 360 once when he got the Orange Box... that was weird enough
