Steve Jobs Resigns As CEO Of Apple

News has just broken that Steve Jobs has resigned from his role as CEO of Apple.

A letter from Steve Jobs stated the following:

CUPERTINO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

        While my joke stands, as it should – i do wish him all the best for the future. It’s a horrible horrible thing to have to go through and no human being deserves such a fate. I’ve lost family members in the same way and it’s on of those things in life that you can’t describe in any other way than it “seriously sucks so bad”.

coming from someone that hates every product apple has come up with in the last 5 years, i think this is a good thing. maybe they will stop overpricing 8gb ipods at like 300 dollars, even though you can buy a 1tb HDD for 98 bucks now.. seriously am i paying for the white? the apple logo? wtf screw iShit

Sadly these comments make me think that perhaps I’m not a kotaku person at all, kotaku isn’t a place where people discuss games or technology, its where nerds come to say how much they hate sony or apple or microsoft or nintendo. What exactly DO you guys like? Why are you all so angry? The rest of the world doesn’t seem too worried about spending money on devices and having fun playing games regardless of who makes them.

  Hey I hear you, but I actually enjoyed reading these comments because they weren’t instantly saying how great the guy was out of principle.
  
  I think most of these people are just having a laugh and that’s good, it means this community is comfortable enough to say some jokes and then not take it too personally, or too far.
  
  I wouldn’t read too much into it. And tbh if you don’t think Kotaku AU is a good community then you are truly lost.
  
  I have never come across such an amazing group of people, with comments so insightful. And the community and the journalists are all on the same level, its not this ‘us and them’ attitude that I’ve seen on a lot of other sites.
  
  I don’t read anger in any of the above comments, maybe try rereading them in a different tone.
  
  Steve Jobs is an interesting character and has definitely changed the phone, music, and personal computing business. He has earned my respect. But if people want to have a laugh at a man who has said a lot of ridiculous shit over the years… that is cool with me.
  
  Saying you are not a “kotaku person” implies to me that you are seeking identification with some group. You probably also identify with Apple products, maybe that is why you are so defensive?

    It’s true most people have a laugh most of the time, and most of the time the Kotaku AU community is as you say, awesome, but whenever the topic turns to ANY successful company, the comments tend to turn into rampant inverse-fanboyism which is just as bad as blatant fanboyism. The in-ability for people to accept that other people think differently is essential nerd. Having an upgraded PC is cool, having a ps3 is cool, having an iPad is cool, having a SNES is cool, not of those things say nerd, but not understanding why other people would value and purchase something you don’t personally like, is.

      I understand how you feel. I get infuriated sometimes reading comments from Gizmodo or Engadget, in fact I don’t read either blog anymore as a result.
      
      Relative to those sites this place is golden.
      
      Could you give me some examples of that kind of behavior(links?). I haven’t come across this.
      
      I think this community is usually positive and supporting of each other. And I say this as mostly a lurker.
      
      It’s amazing to me when I search for #stevejobs on twitter, there are 40 tweets every 30 secs eulogizing the guy. He isn’t dead, he just resigned as CEO, he still works at Apple.
      
      I feel for him. He has decided he is not healthy enough to fulfill his duties as CEO.
      
      If I hear a good Steve Jobs joke its refreshing. All day today I’ve been hearing “pioneer” this and “visionary” that, you know?
      
      This site maybe isn’t politically correct but I think it’s heart is in the right place.
