Grand Theft Auto III Getting Mobile Versions, Pricey Action Figure

Rockstar Games revealed today that it would be honouring Grand Theft Auto III‘s 10th anniversary with a special edition. Later this year, it’s coming to an array of portable devices for Android, but fewer ones for iOS.

Grand Theft Auto III showed us the potential of open world games,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games in an official release. “It helped set the vision for the company, and we have been expanding on those possibilities with every game ever since.”

GTA III will be released on the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4S. That’s it. If you’ve got an iPhone 4, then it looks like you are out of luck.

It’s coming to more Android phones, such as Droid X2, HTC Evo 2, LG Optimus 2X, Motorola Atrix and Samsung Galaxy S2. It’s also headed to Android tablets like Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad, Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

The game’s anniversary doesn’t stop at smartphone ports. Rockstar is also releasing a limited-edition 1:6 scale figure of GTA III protagonist Claude. The figure comes with two sets of clothing, including his cargo pants and bomber jacket as well as his Liberty City prison uniform. Beside the clothes, it also has an array of weapons: a bat, knife, grenades, pistol, sniper rifle and assault rifle.

Priced at $US149.99, the figure is being produced by collectible figure maker Slideshow. Rockstar is also giving one away — more details in the link below.

If you are going to the New York Comic-Con, the smartphone version will be playable at Rockstar’s booth.

Announcing Grand Theft Auto III [Rockstar]

  • People assume his name is Claude Speed, which is actually the name of the protagonist from GTA2… Rockstar does tend to imply the guy in GTAIII is named Claude Speed as well, but he’s a seperate character in a seperate continuity ;-P

Though, if this figure is officially named Claude Speed, then I guess it’s no longer speculation so ignore everything I just said …

    • Now that I think back, I think in San Andreas someone might call him ‘Claude’… maybe… Can’t really remember. But I think the last name is what everyone theorizes about and whatnot.

      • There is, it’s known that San Andreas is technically before the events of GTAIII, as one is based in the early-mid 90s and the other in the early 2000′.

You do a mission in which you meet with both Claude and Catalina from GTA III, she also happens to be the end boss in GTA III, but at this point in time they are boyfriend and girlfriend.

Just like in GTA III, Claude remains silent whilst Catalina does all the shouting! :p

        • haha Yes, exactly. At first all I remembered was CJ calling him mute and whatnot, but then I wasn’t sure if they actually call him ‘Claude’ in the game at some point. Maybe Catalina does? It’s been awhile and I only played through that part once 😛
