You'll Probably Want To Avoid Battlefield 3's "Standard-Def" Version

I thought the first screenshots of Battlefield 3 running on an Xbox 360 looked fine, but then, they were probably using the optional high-resolution texture pack.

Those who don't use that pack, well...you may want to find a way to make it work. Because Battlefield 3 producer Patrick Bach has given the vanilla version of the game a pretty plain nickname.

"The thing with the 360 is that you need to be able to give consumers a game where you don't have to install it on a hard drive, because there are 360s without a hard drive. So we need to give you the option of installing it, rather than just demanding it. You could call it a 'standard-def' version for the 360 if you don't have a hard-drive."

Note that loads of Xbox 360 shooters technically run in "standard definition", Halo 3 probably the most famous among them. But for one of the key men behind one of the year's biggest games to come out and use the term so openly suggests that, yeah, it's not going to look that great if you don't install the textures on your HDD first.

Not that this should be a problem for, well, anyone. I can't imagine the kind of consumer who in 2011 owns an Xbox 360 without a hard drive is the kind of person who will give a rat's arse about the texture quality of a modern military shooter.

What i wish to see is a side by side screen shot of

    NON HDD INSTALL

    HDD INSTALL

would be great to see the difference!

I agree.. comparison shots are needed..

I doubt they'll show them before the game releases.

Any gamer worth giving a shit about will have a 360 with a HHD. They're not even expensive now.

    You snooze, you lose.

Well I've never seen them for less than $130. You can ebay it for less, but I've heard nasty rumours about those ones not letting you go onto Xbox Live which would be pretty crap.

$130 is a fair bit of cash, almost two games.

Ive seen seen 250gig for $40 NZ at dealextreme, dont think its official though.

          sorry $48.70

They're even bigger and cheaper if they were non-proprietary.

        500gb in my 80gb PS3. Such a happy gamer :3

as mentioned on the end, the person who haven't got a HDD in there xbox wouldn't care, tho they probably wouldn't be even using it.

Just like BF3 is making PC users upgrade there PC.

The slow as hell people who are still repping the 20 gig HDD or an arcade might have to finally upgrade.

The proper term is "early adopters". We didn't all wait for the 2010 Christmas bundle (or whatever).

title fix: You’ll Probably Want To Avoid Battlefield 3

... if you are a whiny little girl

so whats it like on PS3 then? Hi Def or standard?

Well since all PS3s have HDDs I can't think of any reason they'd make it standard : /

The PS3s HD textures will no doubt be part of the mandatory install.

I know some people who still own the older 360 but simply cannot afford a new one as they don't have the money.

they have the money but the wrong prioritys.

Well, if they don't have the money for a new 360 or HDD, they probably won't have the money for BF3 either. So it doesn't matter.

Money is not everything in the life but it's only a part in the life.

      As deep as a puddle....

I think that if it is coming to a point where this issue is coming up in more and more games.. maybe it is time to push and get another console out on the market ASAP. Microsoft's eagerness to release the 360 last time is turning out to be a big mistake.. because I feel that they're going to be much further behind Sony in the next release.

I'm not an expert so I'm probably wrong.. and I'm sure I'm missing a lot of details and not considering a few things, but I'd like to hear peoples thoughts.

Something tells me that years of market dominance over the PS3, a massive install base and them making money hand-over-fist on their online market is not considered a "big mistake" around the Microsoft board room table.
