Do Not Let Skyrim Overflow Your PS3

The Elder Scrolls V: Scroll is a big game. Players will want to save their progress along the way. And this is apparently causing players problems on the PS3 and making some call the game "broken".

After Skyrim gamesave files surpass 5MB in the PS3 version, many claim to experience lag and stability issues. "Such as framerate issues, poor rendering, shoddy loading and non interactions fro finishing quests/cutting wood etc," wrote gamer PurpleHaze on the game's official forums.

"I can't finish ANY quest and i can't buy from ANY trader/npc and i can only talk to them after some laggy button pressing," continued PurpleHaze. So my gamesave is now 6mb (how i don't know since i couldn't buy/sell/talk or complete quests) and the LAG and framerate issue is so bad at this point, the game isn't worh restarting."

PurpleHaze, whose issues started after hitting 5.3MB, isn't alone, with other players experiencing similar slowdown once their save files pass the neighbourhood of 5MB~6MB (some are reporting problems after reaching 10MB).

"My file size is growing constantly, and fast," wrote player AMG on the game's forums. "It's already well over 3mb in size and I've only played for 3hrs."

The current fix is to restart the system, which makes Skyrim playable. However, after an hour or two of play, the game once again apparently becomes laggy.

This issue does not seem to affect the Xbox 360 version nor the PC version. Even gamers with plenty of available PS3 hard drive space are having problems.

"It does not take long for the save file to exceed 6MB, roughly 16 hours for me, so playing the game in any sort of depth will become very troublesome," wrote Kotaku reader Toby.

In the above gallery, there is game footage of what looks like people experiencing these issues (note that they might be experiencing unrelated glitches, too). Players are calling the PS3 version "broken".

Bethesda, Skyrim's developer, is no stranger to PS3 game issues. The PlayStation 3 version of Bethesda's Fallout 3 also suffered a whole host of PS3 problems, including this.

Kotaku is following up with Bethesda and will update this post should the company comment.

tbh couldn't be bothered watching these, but i'll just say that i have been having stuttering issues after extended play, but a reset fixes it, and i certainly haven't experienced anything as bad as quest givers not talking to me, the worst glitch I've had is probably getting stuck behind my frost atronach in a dungeon hallway, but that's probably my fault :)

Fallout New Vgeas had same problems on xbox and ps3 until it was patched . This will be patched soon also.

    GOD DAMN IT BETHESDA!
I just had to get the PS3 version of a Bethesda game...

Kinda glad now I went with Saints Row

I am glad that you will never know an excellent game when you see one. More for us.

Along with every other 16 year old in Australia.

I'm with you Toasey. Let's leave folk like "Some guy" and "Ben" to their clearly more mature gaming experience which involves bugs that Bethesda have dealt with before yet still manage to leave behind in their new releases.

I say old chap, while you and your...type...dandy around in your little world I'll be doffing my top hantand andjusting my monocle while having a jolly good stroll around Skyrim - it's a game of playing roles you know.

          lol

I have SR3 and Skyrim. Does that make me super cool or super lame? :p

Now listen here you scallywag. Your tone is completely unecessary and up with it I will not put. Keep at it and I shall be forced to declare a duel!

Sir! Your forget yourself! If you wish to sally, sally we shall!

I've had this problem. I just restart my PS3... no biggy.

      Come again?

        Same here..

I'm amazed at the amount of press Skyrim bugs are getting; yet BF3's constant freezing and save file corruption goes unnoticed.

It's enough to turn you to MW3...

BF3 bugs were reported here in its first week, just Luke ant game.

5mb and consoles are struggling? No wonder Harvey Norman are giving away an Xbox 360 with every PC purchase.

        *like. stupid predictive text.

But this performance issue is affecting quite a large number of PS3 owners (and ONLY PS3 owners), which isnt the same as with BF3 (my multiplayer sessions have been sweet)

copypasta same issue *sigh* on a brand new 160 gig ps3 aswell.

Solution? Buy a 360, keep your PS3 for its exclusives, everyone knows multiplatform games are ALWAYS worst on PS3

People are playing this on PS3? I'm not sure I understand

Meh it's what you get for having a Crappy3 otherwise known as a PS3

LOL PC Gaming fanboy criticising consoles. Surely you mean PC and not RROD-prone console shaped PC with like 2 exclusives?

This comment confuses me. You're attacking a "PC fanboy" by making fun of the 360? Wuh?

Probably something to do with the 4-spin Blu-Ray drive (or is it 2-spin)

More likely to do with the system RAM. While both the PS3 and Xbox 360 have 512MB, it is split into 256MB of system RAM and 256MB of graphics RAM on the PS3. In contrast, the Xbox shares the full 512MB between CPU and GPU, so if a game needs fewer textures in memory it can use that saved memory as system RAM.

So if the save game represents some portion of system RAM used to store the game state, you could easily end up running into low memory problems on the PS3 before the other systems.

Yeah and I'd assume memory fragmentation is what causes it to then slow down and break over time, playing Fallout 3 on PS3 I had to restart it every couple of hours when things started to chug, if I didn't it would inevitably crash.

I'm constantly amazed at how Bethesda don't fix such crucial issues, bugs in the gameworld I could understand considering how large the worlds are, bugs in the system like that should be fixed once for the sake of all their titles.

Wow, I always thought the PS3 had more RAM than that. 512 seems really... small. Even 5 years ago, that was small. Right?

But regardless, from your explanation, it sounds like something that: a) should have been detected/considered already. b) easily fixed.

Don't have Skyrim yet, and probably wont pick it up until the bugs are ironed out a little. Either that or until I upgrade my PC to play Diablo 3 next year (fingers crossed).

i am honestly quite annoyed with this i can rarely get online to update my games. Skyrim keeps freezing ive only played for a few hours after i got the game today. to be honest Bethesda needs to really work on there stuff a little more before releasing a game. if my save files are going to keep increasing in size causing lag and other issues ill be avoiding any future releases from the company

Not sure on the file size, but I only have one game save so far.

Noticed some lag/ freezing and plenty of graphical glitches but level 10 and loving every minute of it.

Describes exactly what happened to me with F:NV, except that it was happening still after 7 patches had been released! Hopefully a patch fixes the problem here, but don't get your hopes up.

It took me about 2 hours to get through the last 20 minutes of F:NV. I was restarting due to freezing and lag all the bloody time after my save file went over 6-7MB.

yeah I'm at level 28, probably on 30-40 hours at a guess, and I'm noticing some serious frame rate issues and more buggy stuff than before here and there. not the end of the world and the game is certainly still playable, but it's definitely there.

I started on Ps3 and did notice my savegame getting larger and larger by the 'save'... I think I'm just under 6 MB. Last night on the way home I grabbed the PC version and started a playthrough on my laptop. (I can barely run it with meager-to-medium settings and still have a decent framerate... good times)

I haven't noticed much difference between the two versions beyond the obvious yet. I'll keep an eye out for these glitches to start cropping up on my Ps3 character... hopefully they patch it soon...

I've played about 25 hours and only experienced one freeze. With a bethesda game that seems a whole lot better than normal.

I'm at a 9mb save still going good.

Ugh, everytime I play, it'll be laggy, then after about 20-30 minutes of playing it'll just freeze up... It's really pissing me off. I'm 6.6mb. My PS3 (160gb) only has Skyrim, Oblivion, Black Ops & MW3 saved games. So I still have 100+ gb left on it. Wtf Skyrim?

I just started getting freezes and lag issues today. I'm at about 9.5 mb level 42 I took off all the autosave's (which are awesome) and it stopped freezing, and the lag went away. Its still an awesome game, I just wish Bethesda worked out all the glitches. My house in Windhelm Hjerim doesn't work. I can't use the weapon's plaques or the shield plaques or the manequins. And i'm stuck with a few quest items (a flute, a drum, and a strange amulet.) Still love it just today got fortify strength enchant. this the first time i've experinced this bug out of oblivion fallout 3 and fallout new vegas I just hope that one of the characters doesn't fall through the map like in fallout 3.

Not happy with Skyrim on PS3 at all. Been experiencing all the problems mentioned above even after resetting the system. I've got 17 MB and really can't play the game much at all anymore. I've even come across a glitch in the game where i'm stuck with certain quest items that can't be removed out of my inventory even though i've completed the quests for them. Really disappointed after being a fan of the Elder scrolls for years...kinda wish i'd gotten the XBOX 360 now

God I love this game, but at Level 50 there is a freeze every 30 minutes, it's becoming unplayable. Bethesda, SOS

level 70 33MB 530 hrs played cant play for more than 5 - 10 mins at a time, its better inside, freezes outside lags somethin feirce inside but doesnt seem ta freeze inside yet
