Please Don't Tell BioWare To Change Mass Effect's Story Because Of Leaks. Please.

Last week, many of the key story points for the upcoming Mass Effect 3 were leaked. So out there, just waiting to spoil you, are arseholes who already know how the game does (or can end).

You'd think this would be a disaster for developers BioWare, but they're actually totally cool about it. So cool, in fact, they say they're open to the idea of "tweaking" some aspects of the story based on feedback from people who have seen the leaked content.

"We listen to our fans all of the time," BioWare co-founder Ray Muzyka told Eurogamer. "We listen to them on the forums, their feedback from stories. We're reading it all. If we can get ideas out of it that will make the game better, sure. We're not adverse to taking feedback. That's part of our core values, is humility. Any time we get a good idea from fans... they're our audience. They keep us in business."

Now, he's probably just being polite. This story has been worked out for a while now, and the skeleton of this game has been finished for months. So if anything was tweaked, it would be something minor. Even then, please, don't go giving them any bright ideas.

It'll stand out, and it'll be weird. And a series with talking jellyfish and inter-species sex is weird enough.

Kind of seems like test audiences for movies. That is rarely a good idea.

    I'm concerned...

Their policy of inclusion with regard to fan feedback has led to some great things (Blasto, Shifty Looking Cow)... but it also led to the 'Sex with everything' mindset in both ME2 and DA2.

Um, Why would you have a game you dont want anyone knowing about on an outside network? And Im talking, hardware not software - if there's away out theres away in...

One of their core values is humility? Ha.

Plus the story is awful. Really, really awful.

Is it just me or are the people who would care most about the story and actually roleplaying there way through the game are the ones who would do everything they could to avoid spoilers?

So they are asking for changes to the story from people who I guess don't really care 'that much' about it

Except that if I were to post a random spoiler in a comment in a random forum not related to mass effect 3 you would still see it.

The fact is that the info could turn up anyway meaning avoiding it often cokes down to luck

Yeah, I came across them very early on (within hours of the leak) when it wasn't confirmed they were even real. Then I thought that since I'd already spoiled myself the entire game including the ending, I may as well take a look and see what else happens.

If anything I'm more excited for the game, now. Some of the content is amazing.

    The changes will be seamless

I'm a bit conflicted about the idea of tweaking in response to fan feedback.

On the one hand, having read almost the entire leaked files, there are lots of things I find a bit baffling (in terms of character development) or confusing (in terms of plot points that don't make much sense). I wouldn't necessarily mind if these were given a re-tweaking in response to some of the more nitpicky fan criticism. Some of the more 'shocking' twists are just frankly unbelievable, and feel extremely out of character for the people involved, for example.

But on the other hand, so much of the criticism is by people with a chip on their collective shoulders; the sort who will never be satisfied with anything Bioware does unless the script wins a Nobel Prize for Literature. The people who love the game (generally) aren't complaining, because they didn't read the leaks in the first place.

So I'd be a bit.. concerned... if the changes to the script were to appease a legion of fans who will never be satisfied, rather than changing it because it works better or makes more sense.

Do you know if there's space combat in this game?

@ James:If there was they'd announce it by now. Doesn't seem to be a priority for them. and no there was no mention of it in the script.

Aidan: honestly the script read like DA2, in terms of how badly written it was. For a company which supposedly puts alot of stock in writing, the whole thing felt very contrived and alot of it clashed with character personalities like you mentioned.

It honestly read like fan fiction, schlocky, terrible fanfiction. So honestly even if there are people criticising just to criticise, the fact is if that leak was representative of the whole game, which apparently it is except for a few changes "apparently" ( after all the stuff they said about DA2 during pre release, I'll never take their word on anything ever again), things aren't looking good for the game

had a chance to talk to Richard Iwaniuk while at GCAP and even when the leak first happened they were already so far along that theres no chance they can change anything, just full steam ahead on making a good launch
