Rockstar: Grand Theft Auto V Will Be The Series' Biggest Game

The next Grand Theft Auto will be the "largest and most ambitious" game ever made by Rockstar, the company behind Red Dead Redemption, Bully and, oh yeah, Grand Theft Auto, said today, one day after dominating the gaming internet with the debut of the trailer for GTA V.

Company founder Sam Houser called the upcoming game "another radical reinvention of the Grand Theft Auto universe".

A press release this morning confirmed that the game will take place in the city of Los Santos -- the GTA version of Los Angeles last seen in the PlayStation 2-era Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas -- as well as "the surrounding hills, countryside and beaches." The press release's description of the game as taking place "in a re-imagined, present-day Southern California" suggests that the new game won't reach up to San Fierro, the San Francisco stand-in that was also in San Andreas, but the claim that this will nevertheless be the largest game made by Rockstar means this will not be a small game.

Rockstar says the game will present "a bold new direction in open-world freedom, storytelling, mission-based gameplay and online multiplayer," as the game "focuses on the pursuit of the almighty dollar." After having built and marketed GTA primarily as a single-player franchise, Rockstar heavily promoted the online multiplayer for 2008's GTA IV and is clearly committed to amplifying that popular aspect of the game.

Rockstar has not indicated when GTA V will come out nor on which platforms. The company has also shared no details on who players will play as in the new game.

    So it's the largest, which I assume means 'larger than San Andreas', but doesn't technically cover as much ground as San Andreas' map did...

    So did they just make the city larger and add some bits of wilderness around the edges?

    I'm curious about whether or not "radical reienvention" means "Brand new continuity seperate from III and IV"... because that's what I had assumed, but some people were pointing out how it shares a lot of things with IV's universe.

      Unfortunately, 'largest' is one of those words that can mean anything. Here's some potential meanings:

      * Largest game area. Huge sprawl, bigger than SA. Presumably that means a bigger city, as it doesn't sound like the whole state is included this time.
      * Largest space taken up on disc. GTA multi-disc on 360?
      * Longest single-player campaign
      * Most stuff to do (more collectibles, stat tracking, Fable-esque family building?)
      * Largest in terms of cost/budget/time investments
      * Most in your face action
      * Heaviest story

      Lots of options, some obviously are better news than others.

    'Radical re-invention' might refer to game mechanics. Kind of like the overhauls that San Andreas and GTAIV represented for the series.

    I have no problems about ordering this the second it becomes available.

    My bets on multiable player characters and maybe a branching story line.Perhaps a non linear many character story like pulp fiction?

    Well by overall hopefully the overall that San Andreas received that made it really good, and GTAIV which made it not as good.

    But from the trailer, I am hyped but I bet its good old gritty depression story, no more jumping from plane to plane, blowing up dams and stealing fighter jets to destroy other fighter jets or breaking into a high security military base and stealing a jet pack. Well I hope not, I hope that stuff remains in a more Vice city sense where the missions weren't exactly over the top, they were interesting and fun in a smaller scale way, such as driving to the golf club to bash someone to death with a golf club, driving around a ice cream truck delivering drugs etc.

      Seriously, if you want the overplayed and repetitive over the top action, play Saints Row. There is nothing wrong with GTA 4. I was more then impressed with the more mature "gritty" feel of GTA 4 and I felt that it was a perfect mix of satire and realism.

    'Radical re-invention' could mean MMO style multiplayer... And 'largest most ambitious game' could mean you can enter all the buildings.

    Personally I'm still hoping that San Fierro and Las Venturas will be included in the game, plus all the shenanigans that made San Andreas so great.

    Southern California is pretty massive. Don't need San Fran when you have San Diego and death valley. By largest I hope that the sandbox and exploration aspects become fun and offer in game rewards like gta 3 did. Achievements are cool but id love an unlocked arsenal at my house to choose from. Passive multiplayer would be cool. Having your mates or randoms control the other characters and running riot through the same city.

    Red Dead Redemption style multiplayer will be epic! Also, I reckon if anyone can make an MMO work properly on consoles (next-gen) it'd be Rockstar.

    id like to see the player take more of a backseat in a bigger story, that would allow for co-op story mode online, like say your guy is a no-name, but it wont happen, the characters are always so rich and different in GTA games

    Will also be refused classification despite having an R18+ rating in Australia.
