Nintendo Releasing ‘Totally New’ 2D Mario Game

In the last few months, Nintendo put out a couple of Mario games — namely, Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7. But Nintendo isn’t finished. There’s another Mario title on the horizon; it wasn’t publically known until today.

At a recent analyst meeting, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata explained that Nintendo is working on many titles for the 3DS, and the handheld should see a steady stream of new games. Upcoming titles include Luigi’s Mansion 2, Paper Mario and Mario Tennis, among many, many more from non-Nintendo studios.

When Iwata showed this image, he said, “Although there is no logo here, we are planning to release a totally new 2D side-scrolling action Super Mario as a key title for the Nintendo 3DS in the next fiscal year.”

Iwata did explain any further about this previously unannounced, “totally new” Super Mario title, but he did point out that it was a “2D side-scrolling”. Expect more details at a later date.
