Yu Suzuki Is Still Talking About Shenmue 3...

Shenmue — it was very good. So good, in fact, that fans are still clamouring for the franchise to continue almost 11 years after the second game was released. Yu Suzuki, the creator of Shenmue isn't doing these poor folks any favours by hinting about the possibility of his new studio obtaining the Shenmue license from SEGA and creating the third entry. Come on Suzuki, don't be so cruel!

The original Shenmue was the most expensive video game ever made at the time, and didn't recoup its costs, but still, a core group of fans still lament the fact that this series, which was planned up to "until chapter 11" according to Suzuki, was canned after the release of Shenmue 2.

I have to say, despite the enthusiasm (or elite trolling skills) of Yu Suzuki, I don't think a proper sequel to Shenmue 3 will ever make it to stores.

Keep dreaming the good dream folks.

I really hope Shenmue 3 is actually released in my life time.

This. I have the second game but I've never finished it because I didn't want to be at a point where I had no new Shenmue to play.
That being said, I've tried to go back to the first game on numerous occasions now but I found the controls to be super-unwieldy so I'd probably be almost as happy with a tweaked HD version of the originals.

Similar situation with me Strange! I'm still completing the 2nd one but if there is no conclusion why bother?
I watched the DVD of the first game as I don't actually have the game.

squre enix is the team for him ....cuz let be real final fantasy games are starting to go dwn a little bit ..... but the combination of yu nd squre enix they could get fans nd people who never heard of this game.. the drama lives on.

I'm starting to think that a Shenmue 3 shouldn't get released. I mean I want it badly but we all know a proper modern Shenmue 3 no matter how good it is won't sell in today's market. This would then discourage any other publishers from funding a game of that style.

I'm still wating for the longest journey 3/ dreamfall chapters...gah

Well I have Shenmue 1 on dreamcast, Shenmue 2 on xbox so Shenmue 3 on xbox 720?

Mega 64 Shenmue always makes me laugh!

My ideal situation would be for Shenmue I and II to be released on XBLA/PSN, followed by a digital only release of Shenmue III using the original game engine.

Also: Two Shenmue posts in one day!!

Go on Suzuki release it for Next Gen . I'm sure you'll sell loads now.

I have 1 & 2 on my dreamcast still and play the hell outta them (when I'm not playing street fighter). i'd settle for the 3rd game coming out as a novel or something at this point, just for closure. i'd like to think Ryo didn't starve to death in an F***ING CAVE

Just give the license and script to quatic dream. You know they'll do a good job of it, and make the controls and pacing of it such that it might achieve a decent level of mainstream success. (BTW I did learn to love the pacing of the original two but I think it's what drove many people away)

If Sega had ported Shenmue Capcom-style they would likely have made a fair bit of their money back. The deal with MS was a big misatke IMHO. They should have ported Shenmue to the following formats:

        Shenmue 1:
        PS2
        Gamecube
        XBox
        PC
        PSP
        Wii
        XBLA
        PSN

        Shenmue 2:
        PS2
        Gamecube
        XBox
        Wii
        PC
        PSP
        XBLA
        PSN

If they'd done that, they would have reduced the loss considerably.

The only way Shenmue 3 will happen is if Yu Suzuki acquires the rights. As long as Sega owns Shenmue its dead, just like most of Sega's Japanese IPs. I can remember when Sega actually made their own games and had internal development teams who rivalled Nintendo's teams. Pretty much all of them have gone now.
Shenmue was made by Sega, which no longer exists, its really just Sammy these days.
Suzuki should consider obtaining the rights then joining Nintendo. Not only would it be a wonderful F*** you to Sega/Sammy, it would give Yu the resources to make a third game; Shenmue would be cheaper to make now as the physics engines, mocap, etc are now ready-made, which they weren't when Shenmue was originally made.
Also, if Yu has the rights he can give licence for graphic novels and art books (Sega currently owns the rights which explains why there have been none), as well as spin-off games. A game where you play as Ren would be cool for the 3DS.

Yeah... I'd like to see this done pretty cheaply honestly. Go easy on the graphics. They don't need to be fantastic, Shenmue 1 looks fine even today let alone 2. Polish up the controls a little bit, though not much needed there. Just... Finish the story. The fans KNOW it's a cult game, we don't mind getting a cult experience. Obviously, since I played through Shenmue 2 again recently and enjoyed it.

    Just make. The damn. Games.
