Killzone 3 Multiplayer Coming Free To A PlayStation Near You

This week, Sony announced a new experiment in free-to-play gaming coming to the Playstation Network, in their most recent Blogcast podcast.

Killzone 3 Multiplayer will be available on PSN next week. This edition of the shooter spins off the multiplayer part of the game as a separate entity from the singleplayer campaign, bringing all of Killzone 3's multiplayer modes and maps, including a year's worth of DLC maps, to consoles for free. Developers Guerrilla Games explain that players have access to all multiplayer material until the level of Sergeant I, before needing to pay $US15 to unlock and continue levelling or gaining trophies.

Killzone 3 launched almost exactly a year ago, in February 2011. The Kotaku review at release called it a "colourful, wonderful, enthusiastic mess."

Kz3 was actually fun, but not enough grinding but it's the few ps exclusives that stAnds out unlike any of zipper interactive games

Can disc players play with downloaded players, though?

This is nice to see, I was a fan but the constant map packs splintered the player base. Then when COD MW3 and battlefield 3 came out the game turned into a ghost town.I wonder what will happen to people like me that own the original game but not the map packs? Will we still get free use of the maps or be level capped?

If you own the full game do you get the map packs free also or a they just with the free multiplayer version?

interesting idea, and it could work, though i personally didn't like what GG did to the multiplayer, it resembled too much like the CoD:Black Ops unlock system compared to KZ2 which was more akin to the battlefield style.

Could be a solution to work with network passes as well, allow people borrowing the game have access to the multiplayer component, and if they like it, they can buy it.

Might download it and see if they have fixed the controller lag. I returned the game as it was just not playable for me, well not with any real precision... Bloody annoyed the shit out of me. Is there anyone else out there that noticed this?

Hrm. Interesting Idea. Which reminds me. I have an unopened copy of Killzone 3 I got in a black friday sale sitting on my shelf. I should finish Killzone 2 sometime so I can give it a go.
