What's Mass Effect 3 Mobile?

Every three months, game publisher EA tells the public that one of its upcoming games, Mass Effect 3 will be coming out for consoles (of course!), PC (expected) and "handheld/mobile" (huh?).

Mass Effect 3 will be out in less than five weeks, so here we are wondering what it's about. It won't be a 3DS or Vita game, it seems. Any maybe it's not even a game. Here's what an EA rep told Kotaku today:

"There will be "handheld/mobile" products tied to Mass Effect 3, as noted in our past few earnings announcements. They are part of the Galaxy at War system. We will have more details to share soon."

That's semi-helpful. Maybe it's a game. Maybe it's some sort of tracking app for the Galaxy at War element of Mass Effect 3. But what's Galaxy at War? It's a meta-game that connects single-player and multiplayer of Mass Effect 3, somehow inviting players into various missions that will more swiftly earn them enough "galactic readiness" points to get the game's best ending(s?). When EA reps first described this system to me it sounded like there could be a Facebook component, too, but that was just my speculation about which they'd only look at me with stone-faced expressions.

This is the problem with EA... Rather than focusing on the game as an experience, they're focusing on how they can stretch the market share as far as possible.

EA's new strategy is Multiplayer on every game and release on as many platforms as possible.

To me it sounds like it will really expand the experience of the single player game and the mass effect universe. With the story centering of the reaper invasion of the universe, from what i've seen of the multiplayer, it looks like it will be a more co-operative experence with players working together to stop (or bring about?) the invasion.
We'd have to see when the game comes out, but this might effect other aspects of the single player game. Say you play a multiplayer map on a space station where a certain scientist holds some key info to help stop the invasion. if you manage to save him from the enemy perhaps this is reflected in conversations in the game world as you travel, perhaps you can gain a little more insight into the universe. Or vice versa if you fail.
I'm optimistic that this muliplayer experience will be a good one.

I would normally agree, but Multiplayer looks god damn awesome in ME3.

Yay! Facebook, Mobile and Multi-player Mass Effect! Hopefully they'll have some Happy Meal toys as well. Here's hoping they'll bring out a Wii and DS version as well. Isn't EA the greatest, giving their fan's non-stop Mass Effect action? Why just play it on PC or XBox when you can play it on EVERYTHING!

Because the Xbox isn't nearly as good as the ps3.

PS3 isn't nearly as good as PC :P

Considering how terrible ME2's mobile tie-in was, I hope to hell they don't make it compulsory to get some awesome DLC.

I'm not even puttingup a fight. I'll be playing the mobile tie in for as long as it takes to get whatever ME3 unlocks it has.
