The newest entry into the Angry Birds franchise really, really means it about being in space. The launch announcement for Angry Birds Space came today from the International Space Station, in orbit above Earth. In the video above, NASA astronaut Don Petit explains some of the physics of how angry birds can launch an assault on pigs in space.
Angry Birds Space will be available on March 22 for iOS, Android, Mac and PC, along with a variety of tie-in merchandise, books and more. The game features 60 levels at launch, starring new birds and using a variety of different gravitational tricks and superpowers to move gameplay along. Rovio also promises future free level updates and, for iOS, in-app purchases.
The launch announcement marks the beginning of an educational partnership between developer Rovio and NASA. In a statement, David Weaver, a communications representative for NASA, said:
"This collaboration began with a simple Twitter exchange about birds and pigs in space, and it has grown into a tremendous outreach and education opportunity. Games are fun and entertaining, but they also can be inspirational and informative. This ongoing collaboration with Rovio and Angry Birds is an exciting way to get people engaged with NASA's missions of exploration and discovery, and get students energized about future careers in science and technology."
