Insomniac’s Canceled Pinball Project Had Powerful Potential

Celebrating the company’s transition to Facebook’s mandatory Timeline format, Insomniac Games shares the secrets of 1080Pinball , the high-definition downloadable game that never was.

Ratchet & Clank and Uncharted are nice and all, but give me a strong pinball video game with tight physics and a meaty selection of tables and I’ll run off into my little cubby hole for days, emerging only to empty cups of… well, never mind that. Hidden away in the 2007 section of Insomniac’s new Facebook front page is a bevy of art for a pinball powerhouse that didn’t make it. From the Timeline entry:

Insomniac began development on a new IP, called 1080Pinball on January 5th, 2007. The title would be a downloadable game, and was intended to be the most realistic pinball simulation ever (including simulating weight of ball, gravity, and friction of table surface, as well as accurately modelling the “kick bumpers”), running in 1080p and 60fps.

Get it? 1080P? Don’t you just want to pinch their little cheeks?

The game was to feature original levels inspired by the greatest pinball tables of all time, as well as “a ‘Gran Turismo‘ level of progression”. I don’t know what that means, exactly, but it sounds lovely.

Sadly, 1080Pinball ceased to be in late 2007. Finding this out today leaves me with four years and change worth of disappointment to catch up on. While I do that, check out art from the game’s first official table, Captain Starlight.
