It's Insane How Many People Read Gaming Wiki Pages Every Month

Signalling just how radically the way we read and learn about video games has changed over the past decade, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales now says he has the world's biggest network of gaming sites on the internet.

Which is a bit of a stretch; unlike his commercial rivals, Wales' Wikia system - which has over 2000 individual entries - is entirely user-created and run.

Meaning that the "26 million monthly unique views" it generated last month, surpassing the figures of even IGN and GameSpot, should be taken with a pinch of salt.

But only a pinch, because 26 million is still an astonishingly large number of people, especially when you consider most users would only be consulting one or two pages every month, depending on what they're playing.

I can believe the 26 million figure. Must admit when I'm completly stuck I'll check out the games Wikia.

I wonder why publishers and the companies that write 'Cheat' or 'Strategy' guides haven't gone after this as it would definately eat into their potential revenue.

Wouldn't that be like Encarta going after Wikipedia?

Mass Effect 3 wikia is in my phones bookmarks since yesterday hahaha.

Not to help with missions. Just curious on backstory I don't know about (like who the fck is Jai Leng haha)

I like the random trivia that comes from reading it :D

I love wikis for games, they are usually more comprehensive then anything else

Every time I read a wiki for a game Im currently playing I always end up coming across spoilers :/ haha

They are a one stop shop for anything you need to know, great for minecraft.

I don't have teamfortress.com bookmarked. I have the wiki bookmarked.

When I play minecraft the wiki is always open

When playing singleplayer games (like Mass Effect or Fallout) I will make mental notes of lore I want to look up after this session, and then spend hours going over the wiki.

I think this number is accurate. Commercial game sites really need to up their game if they hope to compete with Wiki's
