Metal Gear …Arcade!? It Can’t Be!

While Metal Gear Online‘s servers will be shutting down soon, there is one last place to get your Metal Gear Online fix: Japanese Arcades.

Developed by Kojima Productions, Metal Gear Arcade is a light gun-FPS released in Japan on December 20, 2010. Much of Metal Gear Arcade is identical to Metal Gear Online with many of the maps and online play modes returning from that game. The single player modes, however, are unique to the arcade version of the game.

The cabinet itself comes complete with microphone, chair, stereoscopic 3D display, surround sound and the most complex light gun I have ever seen. Its buttons mimic the triggers of a variety of different weapons while the thumb stick on the front handle controls movement. Camera control, on the other hand, is linked to a tilt sensor attached to the side of a pair of 3D goggles — turning your head into the second thumbstick.

While the controls are complex to say the least and the head movement camera control takes some getting used to, it is hands down one of the most immersive arcades ever created. Check out the video above to see it in action.
