What Are You Reading?

I know, it sounds crazy, but sometimes we like to do things that aren’t video games, right? So I thought I’d ask you guys a quick question — what are you reading?

I think I’m going to make this a little Tuesday regular, to give each other the chance to talk about stuff we’re doing that isn’t video games. It could be TV shows, movies, books, sport, exercise — anything.

Today it’s books!

I wish I had more time to read. At the moment I’ve been reading a lot of manga — Akira, Vagabond, and Pluto are ones I’ve recently managed to polish off.

Tragically I can’t even remember the last novel I finished. Man, that’s terrible…

What about you guys — what are you reading at the moment? And also, just as a personal question — who’s using a e-reader? Been thinking about getting a Kindle for a while now…

Last book I read was Always Looking Up by Michael J. Fox and Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King. Unfortunately that was last August. Shameful, I know.

I finished A Feast For Crows a few weeks ago, just waiting for A Dance With Dragons to arrive now. I normally don’t even read books, but Game of Thrones was too awesome.

  I’m somewhere in the middle of A Feast for Crows and it’s a bit of a struggle compared to the other books in the series. Maybe I’ve just run out of momentum and need to read something else before getting back to things.

  I’ve been reading the set since I got it from Amazon late last year. Absolutely love it. I’m about a 1/3rd of the way through Dance with Dragons and it’s nice to be back with the old crowd after Feast for Crows. But I found FFC really refreshing after spending so much of the last 3 novels with the same characters. It was good to have a new set of perspectives.

    It was definitely interesting to learn about other parts of Westeros, albeit a bit slow at times. Still enjoyed it though.

    The problem with all of those new perspective characters is that they just get dumped on you in one big hit. Would have been much better to integrate them into the story in the previous book so that it’s less of a shock when suddenly most of the familiar faces are gone.

  I’m about halfway through A Dance with Dragons, but been finding it hard to find time to set aside for it – I’ve been reading it since Christmas… getting distracted by games, work, and the need for sleep.
  Also started reading the AC:Revelations book (preorder bonus for AC3 at EB), which is much easier to read (shorter chapters, HUGE text so I can still read when I’m really tired :P, and pretty short), but it’s very difficult to not pause in irritation every few sentences due to the author’s penchant for sentence fragments (he really needs to learn how to use semicolons).

Recently finished the original Dark Tower series, going to be starting The Stand next while waiting for my The Wind Through the Keyhole to arrive. D:

  Ah, The Stand. I loved that so damn much. I recommend this to almost any one who’s into Stephen King, but if you haven’t read Duma Key then you should. Best of his new stuff, in my opinion.

      I loved The Stand mini-series until I actually got around to reading the book. Now I can’t stand it. Still get chills at Don’t Fear the Reaper, though. There was talk of a new movie a while back. Here’s hoping it eventuates… and is good. 😛

        Now that was a weird film; part comedy part scarey. Didn’t know whether to laugh or scream.

Just finished “Throne Of The Crescent Moon” by Saladin Ahmed, which I recommend (a kind of swords-and-sorcery novel set in a fictional Arabia).

I’m now reading “The Sun Over Breda” by Arturo Perez-Reverte, a Spanish historical novel set during the Eighty Years War in what is now the Netherlands.

I’ve gradually been reading Gauntlgyrm, I like fantasy however what I enjoy reading the most is short stories my favourite short story author being Raymond Carver, most of the short stories you can buy are normally collections of several authors so it’s hard to know them by name.

Always been a big Terry Pratchett fan, but was recently given Good Omens (Terry and Neil Gaiman) as a present and am heavily into that at the moment.
Also recently finished the latest Raymond E Feist book, A Kingdom Imperrilled. Not sure if it was just my copy but there seemed to be a lot of mistakes, mainly at the edting level (words missing, wrong word) , but the most jarring was a major plot problem where the author seems to get two of the characters mixed up.
Still a great story, but dissappointing.

Just finished Paramedico by Benjamin Gilmour about his travels as an ambulance officer around the world. Talk about the alternate realities in which some people live (or are forced to live). Makes you thankful to be in the relatively safe communities we have in Australia.
Just about all of our new books are Kindle now. I use the (backlit) iPad version when reading in bed at night. My wife keeps the Kindle in her handbag.

I’m current reading “Predictably Irrational”. Its a pop-science book on a similar topic as my PhD. Its not bad.

I think I’m going to read “On the Road” next and the “Mogworld” by Yahtzee.

Yes, I have fairly eclectic tastes.

I’ve got three on the go. One at work, one by the couch, and one on my bedside table for before-bedtime reading.

Feed by Mira Grant – an awesome post-zombie apocalypse novel based on a couple of bloggers (the only relevant form of media, dontchaknow) following a presidential candidate on the campaign trail through zombie-infested America. For any zombie aficionados out there, I highly recommend it.

A Storm of Swords by George R R Martin – ’nuff said.

City of Dragons by Robin Hobb – The third in a series of four books in the Rain Wild Chronicles. I’ve only just started this one.

    Then i suppose i’ve been reading Trigun Maximum. I didn’t realize that Trigun continued after the original Anime/Manga. Since i absolutely loved the anime, as soon as I saw the book at my local Anime/Manga specialty store, I almost died… Thank god I didn’t, otherwise I would’ve never started to read it…

    i own every matther reily book out except hover car racer i absolutely love the jack west jr series and scarecrow series would of loved to see him do somewhat of a crossover of the 2 books when he wrote 5 ancient warriors since it already mentions scarecrows unit (1st force recon) and they use the maghook but oh well i can dream

The amount of free content available is amazing. Reading all the old great SF.
Shelley’s “Frankenstein”, Robert A Heinleins “Citizen of the Galaxy” etc
Currently reading Edgar Rice Burrough’s Princess of Mars(of “John Carter” fame)

The Stand – Great book; one of my favourites.

“The Ghost Map”, by Steven Johnson. I started getting into Johnson after reading his most recent book “Where Good Ideas Come From” and have now got the entire back catalogue. As a man of science, his books subject matter is really interesting (The Ghost Map is about the cholera outbreak in London) and he has a flair for the written word that makes the science even more easily digestible. Such a good change up between my usual daily routine of skimming scientific journals.

Thorough recommendation for The Ghost Map, Incredibly strong recommendation for Where Good Ideas Come From.

Apart from the occasional graphic novel, the only thing I really read anymore, for a few years now, are how-to books. Especially programming ones.

That said, I thoroughly recommend Maus, which I reread recently.

Trying to read three things at once: Mogworld by Yahtzee Croshaw, Snuff by Pterry Pratchett and “The Big Scrum: How Teddy Roosevelt Saved Football”, about the origins and historical pitfalls of American football.

All really enjoyable, but the end result is that I’m not progressing through any of them and just play games of an evening instead!

I also want to finish them all so that I can start on the Song of Fire and Ice books, but that will probably happen some time around 2015 😛

Re-reading 1984 and Brave New World side by side at the moment, inspired by the great comic strip of the same nature. I haven’t read them for yonks, so it’s been a fun trip.

Before that I reread The Slap and Chelsea Handler’s last book.

And I’m impatiently awaiting All My Friends Are Still Dead to arrive from the UK (2 weeks to go)!

I’ve recently ben trying to read Lord of the Rings, because I bought it awhile back and never got past Tom Bombadil. So I’m currently having another crack at it. However I only generally read on my morning and afternoon commute – I got an iPhone a week and a half ago so my commutes have been filled with Twitter/Impossible Game/Jetpack Joyride/Draw Something, which has prevented me from reading.

I also have some books for the Kindle app I found for free on Amazon, so I’ve also been reading the occasional Sherlock Holmes story.

    The book I downloaded free via Amazon/Kindle is actually the same book I have a paperback of somewhere from when I was doing a ‘Representing Crime’ subject at university back in 2005 and went on something of a murder mystery kick.
    
    While I enjoy reading them I don’t know if they hold up all that well. Having the stories told from Watson’s point of view and him being constantly amazed by Holmes is all well and good, but it’s kind of frustrating when Holmes solves the mystery and it’s only a mystery to us because we have NO CLUES WHATSOEVER.
    
    This is why Agatha Christie’s Poirot stories are way better. If you like real mysteries check out The Murder of Roger Ackroyd!

Twilight – Nah kidding. Although I did recently finish The Hunger Games trillogy which was very good. Despite the (unspoken) BR influence. Now I am reading the City and the City – which is about an eastern european city that is crossthatched (literally takes up the same space) as another eastern eurpoean city- they have to basically pretend to unsee the other city unless they are properly in it. Very cool. Also, Stardust by Neil Gaiman

I’m between books at the moment. The next thing I read will probably be Terry Goodkind’s ‘The Omen Machine’.

I’ve had a Kindle for a while now and I love it. I have no more space in my house for books so I’m able to satisfy my often voracious reading habit without cluttering up the place any further.

Last book I finished was Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan.
Currently working my way through the initial Dragonlance omnibus, then after that it’ll be the original Dune series.
On another note – I don’t have an e-reader since I only read books once, then have them on my shelf to lend to other people.
My girlfriend has her favourite books she’ll re-read until they fall apart (some are up to the third copy now) so she loves her e-reader as a stand in for those.

Since last year I’ve been making my way through Terry Brook’s Shannara series. I got up to The Elf Queen of Shannara (book 3/4 of the second group of books) but then TAFE ended and now it sits there being unfinished. I still chip await at it every now and then.

I’ve been moving chronologically through the Star Wars EU novels, starting with the Thrawn Trilogy, currently on I, Jedi.

  You’re probably aware, but the protagonist of I, Jedi is Corran Horn, who was previously in the X-Wing series. While I, Jedi takes place after the Thrawn Trilogy the X-Wing books take place before. They’re pretty worthwhile reading.
  
  Just do yourself a favour and avoid anything written by Kevin J. Anderson. While his Jedi Academy trilogy introduces Luke rebuilding the Jedi Academy, his writing is simply awful and the protagonist is the biggest Gary Stu I’ve ever seen written. His later contributions like Darksaber are equally terrible. You can also probably skip over Crystal Star, Children of the Jedi and New Rebellion – they’re all one-shot unrelated stories that don’t really offer anything new or affect anything since they were written after the books that are set after them in the Star Wars timeline, and as standalone books they’re not really worth reading.
  
  Sorry. I don’t mean to sound overly negative, but… a lot of the Star Wars EU is trash, basically licensed fanfic.

  Oh, another note: Timothy Zahn is easily the best of the EU writers, which is why the EU took off so well – his Thrawn Trilogy kicked off the whole thing.
  
  You might want to check out his other works, I can happily recommend (in order of quality): The Icarus Hunt, the Conqueror trilogy (Conqueror’s Pride/Heritage/Legacy), and Manta’s Gift.

    Yep, I read Allegiance and Choices of One by Zahn, very good.
    
    I understand most of the Star Wars EU is trash, but I base it on the first few chapters thanks to Kindle samples… If I can’t dig it, I skip it.
    
    Thinking about skipping straight to the Black Fleet trilogy, then the Corellian Trilogy, then the Hand of Thrawn Duology…. willl probably read some cliff notes on the books inbetween.

  Just wanted to say that I remember loving “I, Jedi” a ton. Haven’t read it in forever, though.
  
  Also, listen to Matt K up there, he seems to know what he’s talking about… I jumped ship on Star Wars books after the first few ‘New Jedi Order’ books… Just couldn’t stomach it anymore.
  
  The Icarus Hunt was pretty great though.

Just starting ‘Iron Council’ by China Mieville. The guy is a great SF writer – he won the Hugo award a few years back – in the pure sense; more into ‘ideas’ than space opera. Check out the ‘The City and The City’ for a trippy head-fuck of a novel. ‘The Scar’ and ‘Perdido Street Station’ are good too.

Been reading the Drizzt Do’Urden books. Up to V now, Streams of Silver.
But I’m also reading the first book of Chronicles of the Necromancer, The Summoner, and I’m about three quarters through the first book of Song of Ice and Fire, Game of Thrones, plus I’m just over halfway through the first book of The Kingkiller Chronicles, The Name of the Wind.
What can I say, I like to read. 🙂

Currently reading Resurrection, Inc. by Kevin J Anderson. It’s okay, but I just finished reading a whole bunch of short stories by DB Reynolds-Moreton. Totally awesome, I highly recommend checking him out if you like snappy sci-fi. Especially Transplant, the Martian Enigma and the Seed Garden.

REAMDE by Neal Stephenson… very much feeling like a spiritual prequel to Snow Crash…
Also it includes a very nice dig at Google for ripping off the ‘Earth’ software mentioned in that book.

I am currently reading a book Titled “Blue Remembered Earth” By Alastair Reynolds.

I don’t think his current work lives up to previous settings(Chasm City/Revelation Space/Pushing ICe etc), although I am only 1/3 of the way through this one, so it may pick up.

White Tiger by Kylie Chan. Kung Fu Urban Fantasy set (mostly) in Hong Kong. Dip a LITTLE into paranormal romance which I’m not into so much, but thus far I like the characters and the story, while a little slow is interesting. I’m in ’till the end.

Just about finished A Clash of Kings and will then move on to either A Storm of Swords or Scarecrow and the Army of Thieves.

Out of curiosity, do you read more physical books or eBooks? I’ve recently moved onto eBooks on a Kobo Touch (which is brilliant) as my first born’s nursery has taken over my study. Whilst I miss having the physical book on my shelf, I do find reading with the ereader much easier.
I’ve found that more obscure non-fiction books are a little harder to find though.

The Horus Heresy: Legion.

This one is by far the best Black Library book I’ve ever read so far. It’s nice to read about the Horus Heresy from the perspective of a normal human, instead of a Sphess Mehreen.

I am reading for a work initiative/business program – Lean Six Sigma. Very interesting reading.

Just downloaded a Sample of the Game of Thrones compendium. I will check it out before purchasing it in iBooks. Some authors styles I don’t like. The story may be good but sometimes I hate how it is told by the author.

…and last but not least, beginning my 2nd time in the Takeshi Kovacs universe – Altered Carbon. I highly recommend this book.

Just picked up The John Carter of Mars Collection for Kindle, for $0.99.

I only bought the Kindle at the start of this year. Used traditional books before that. My partner uses iPad, but I prefer the look of e-Ink.

Wow, not to sound too elitist, but damn!
This should have been called “what were you reading 5-10 years ago?” Belgarid series (15 years at least!)… Game of thrones.. Enders game?
Back on topic, I’m reading Robin Hobb’s latest -City of Dragons, and Blood Meridian by Cormac MaCarthy.
Some good recommendations here, for my 20c I would recommend Martin Cruz Smith (mystery/crime), his Protagonists are all interesting and distinctly human, not at all one dimensional.

I just finished (paperback) When the Game was Ours by Magic Johnson and Larry Bird which was excellent.

i’m still reading through ” The Wise Man’s Fear” which is book 2 of the king killer chronicle.

But mostly i’m reading the manual for a boardgame called Magic Realm which was originally released in 1979. It’s an amazing game and from what i understand one of the first fantasy boardgames every released. The 3rd edition rulebook which i’m reading through is 122 pages all up, but of course alot of them don’t require reading more than once.

There is still no fantasy game that can match it for sheer scope.

Actually reading through as much of Wheel of Time as I can handle at the moment, just starting book 4, god I am sick of ‘light’ and ‘burn me’ and ‘She tugged her braid’, lol still a good read for a chapter or two a night before sleep.
Previous to that were the glorious David Gemmell books, ahh Druss. Thats almost become my way to live ‘hmm should I do X?’ “What would Druss do?” lol

Murakami’s new one 1Q84, one of my favourite authors (if you’ve not read it start with Kafka On The Shore, awesome awesome book…) and certainly an interesting read from him. A slight departure and almost, it seems, a discussion of writing in general.

Anyhoo I wouldn’t start with this one if you’ve not read him before, start with Kafka On The Shore.

Once i’m done will head back to Feast of Crows, ripped through the others over the “summer” break and looking forward to getting back into the series.

Altered Carbon is excellent, you should also read the others in the Kovacs series if you haven’t already. Broken Angels and Woken Furies. Great books, amongst my faves of all time

As hipster douchey as it sounds, A Song of Ice and Fire just doesnt feel as special to me now that its a TV show and thousands of new readers are discovering it. Forgive me! I dont want to be the “I was into it before it was famous” guy but I cant help it. I respect anyone who waited 6 years for Dance and 5 years for Feast, being somewhat dissapointed with both. Oh and A Memory of Light will finally end my 13 year journey of WOT, and what an up and down journey its been.
