So… Why Is Headless Nathan Drake Taking On That Helicopter?

You might be looking at that image and thinking, “Why the heck doesn’t Nathan Drake have a head? What is he thinking, going up against a helicopter with no head?”

And that would be a fair question to ask! In fact, this is an image from today’s Naughty Dog panel at PAX East, in which Game Director Justin Richmond, Game Designer Eric Schatz and Community Strategist Arne Meyer talked about the creative process behind Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.

Among other things, they had a headless version of Drake that they use to run through their dev build without having to dedicate processing power to the complex animations required by his head.

Must stop… urge to make stupid jokes taking over…

“Careful Drake, it’s a helicopter! Don’t lose your head!”

“Woah, Drake! We’re under attack! Don’t get ahead of yourself!”

“Drake! When I told you to ‘head for cover’ that wasn’t what I had in mind!”

Whew. Sorry. Had to get that out of my system.
