We’re Not Buying Fast-Spreading Wii U Launch Date Rumour

You might have read rumours swirling around the internet today that suggest the Wii U will be out on November 18. Multiple gaming websites, such as GameSpot and Eurogamer, have reported on the rumour, which originated at the website Wii U Daily. Wii U Daily says it obtained an email from a Japanese retailer that confirms the release date.

One glance at Wii U Daily should be enough to make you question the website’s veracity. The site claims that Rockstar said it would bring Grand Theft Auto V to Wii U in 2013, citing a “financial report” from the Manhattan-based developer. No other website has reported on this “financial report”, nor is it available on either Rockstar or parent company Take-Two’s websites.

Based on this information, we’re sceptical of this website’s latest report. Although November 18 certainly sounds like a plausible release date for the Wii U, we’re not buying this one without better proof.

We reached out to both Wii U Daily and Nintendo for comment, and will update should either party choose to respond.

Wii U launch date set for November 18, 2012: Report [Wii U Daily]

  • Gamecube launched November 18, and Wii launched November 19.

You’re right, I’m totally not buying this. November 20 is far more realistic.

In other news, the Gamecube launched in May the following year. I wonder if we would seriously put up with a five-month delay nowadays? The Wii’s delay was only a few weeks.

Of course, Nintendo operates under the “Disney Vault” model of business, making fewer units than demand. I don’t really get it as people who want it can’t buy it, but it does put pressure against discounting.

    • I’m pretty sure we only had to wait a day or two for the Wii. It was released in all major regions in the space of a week.

  • I’m a little more worried about the rumour I read today that the Wii U isn’t as powerful as an Xbox 360…

  • Ah, it’s the old we-don’t-believe-the-rumour-and-we’re-using-that-as-an-excuse-to-repeat-the-rumour-on-our-own-website trick. Well played.

  • just a question why wouldn’t they release the console before all the major AAA titles are released eg. Call of Duty Assassans Creed 3 among others wouldn’t they potetially lose money.

  • Remember when Microsoft announced the 360-S at E3 and it was “available now” (and it was) I reckon the same thing will happen with the Wii U. Darksiders 2 is confirmed as a Wii U title and it launches at the end of June, call me crazy but ever since last year’s E3 I have felt that Nintendo will pull a stunt like this (and it will be great if I’m right!)
