What people loved most about GSC Game World's S.T.A.L.K.E.R. franchise were the lonely, post-apocalyptic landscapes that the game let you wander through. But S.T.A.L.K.E.R.'s dead now and things are going to be different in the world being built by the former developers of that franchise won't be quite as sparsely populated.
As previously reported, members of the GSC Game World team have reformed as Vostok games and are working on a new free-to-play online shooter called Survarium. Why didn't they make a new single-player game, with all the acclaim they received for the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. franchise? An article at Gamasutra quotes project manager Ruslan Didenko, who says:
"What we realised is that while we had been preoccupied with delivering single player titles one by one, the world changed, and we have to change too. Therefore, we decided to take a dramatic step and switch to online."
Survarium will reportedly feature smaller multiplayer space, but with the same post-apocalyptic focus as the creators' previous work:
"We've worked on post-apocalyptic games for so long that it is beyond our powers to create something completely different in the near future. On top of that, we've got a colossal amount of ideas that will be impossible to bury in our consciousness. We treat Survarium as an heir to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Similar to that series, we still want to pay much attention to the atmosphere and visuals."
You'll have to wait until next year to see just how much of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. DNA makes into this new game. Hopefully, it'll be a different kind of end-of-days creepy.
