This Photo Has A Fuzzy Arcade Machine, And A Girl With A Chainsaw For Some Reason [NSFW]

"I'm some loser street artist from Western Australia," said the email. "I call myself GIRL. Anyway, I made this sick-ass fluffy arcade machine that I thought you might find cool."

Well it is quite cool actually. Don't know why the girl in her underwear with a chainsaw is there, though!

"I took some pretty lame photos with some of my cute friends in their undies," continues GIRL. "This machine is running a PS3 so you can play whatever the hell you like (for me it's mostly Street Fighter 4, Darkstalkers and Scott Pilgrim). My next project is a mini mame arcade that will be covered in graffiti. I'll send some pics when that one's done. Later this year I'm opening up an exhibition with my machines and other lame artwork."

I'm not sure if this is parody, or something weird, because I don't really get art. But the arcade is quite cool.

You can check out more of GIRL's artwork here.

Strange as to what constitutes as art these days...

Oh well - it is a subjective term, after all :P

Oh wow.. i just went to the site.. my eyes are bleeding - it's like something a 14 year old does with her facebook pics :s

He's a scenester who's good as his own publicity but not much else. His "art" is like one big Vice magazine ad, and he's really NOT representative of the street art we have over here in WA.

Just take a visit to an art gallery, especially in the modern or contemporary art section. There's stuff in there that I just don't understand how it's art...it looks like a 5 year old has scribbled on the wall, or someone's tripped over a bucket of paint. There's one particular piece which is quite famous which is just a plain black canvas on a wall. I'm sorry but that's not art, that's a plain black canvas on a wall.

Strangely my wife insists that a plain black canvas on a wall is art but refuses to acknowledge that games are art.

        Terrible art is still art.

Video games aren't considered art by most people for the same reason sport isn't. The bat and the ball are just the tools of an artist and the epic moments the player uses to create them are art. The catch is that if you don't love your sport then it's almost impossible to appreciate it on an artistic level.

I just realised I said "Terrible art is still art" underneath someone's artwork. I wasn't talking about this work, just the general concept of 'all this modern art looks like a two year old had an accident'.

I'd go as far to say that a blank black canvas on a wall in not "terrible art", it's just not art period. If that is art then my hairdo when I wake up in the mornings is art. There's no talent on show with a blank black canvas. None. The artist may have had a specific meaning when he did it, but it's still a plain black canvas.

Art doesn't have to be about technical talent. Some of the most influential artists have zero technical skill. In the case of a blank canvas there's a whole bunch of conversation and cliché thought about what art is that are meant to be drawn out by it. The amazing part is that it as done to death the idea is it still manages to work. We're having this back and forth about what art is and exploring the concept. Granted we both think it sucks.
I say go down there with a texter and draw something on it. If someone tells you off run off yelling 'art has no boundaries!'.

Ok, story aside - Tell me why this is NSFW, yet this story: is-this-year-the-last-hurrah-for-the-games-expo-as-we-know-it is not.

    Get it together guys.

Indeed, a little leg is ruuuuude. All out cleavage and almost nipple is ok?

"..running a PS3, so you can run whatever you like.." eh?? Isn't it the opposite? Wouldn't a PC running MAME "run whatever you like"??

So this is an aside, but anyone else find the amount of self-deprecation weird? It came off as a cynical attempt to pre-empt/negate criticism to me (I am probably wrong).

You're probably right, but that is typical behaviour for someone displaying what they think is good, but sensitive to getting criticsm.
Unfortunately for the artist, most of the audience is going to be more interested in the technical specs of the arcade machine, than appreciating her artwork. Given that chainsaws and half naked girls are a common element in gaming, I can see why she has missed her mark a bit.

I'm curious why an arcade machine has been used as a canvas.
She obviously has an interest in gaming - maybe she's combining two interests ?

It's hipster talk, didn't you know everything is meh and that you can never say anything positive? Duh, loser. :p

What's gonna be so great about his exhibition? Fluffy arcade games, and 'graffiti' art is pathetic... Anyone can do it, and just because she got her art degree from Edith Cowan doesn't mean she's an artist in the slightest....

Ok, having looked at the site, and apart from the bright and livid colours, I find curious that the artist gives the impression they are a girl, yet apparently is a guy.
Yes, yes, I know this is common in gaming, it just makes this look like....

    ...IT'S A TRAP !!

Perhaps it's just an excuse to get her cute friends to stand around without many clothes on. I mean, isn't that why everyone gets into art?

*his* cute friends. I think that reinforces my theory.

I dont get art, even the so called 'good' art. So you painted a picture, good for you. Sculpture? Nice I guess. Your movie is deep? Well OK Mr. I Feel A Lot.

    Is dat sum CP?

In other news, I've seen a fluffy arcade cabinet just like this already. Pretty sure it was a MAME cabinet though. It lives in Bar Ettiquette down in Melbourne, though was out of order when I saw it. The wall next to it is covered in sheets of paper listing all the games available on it, as well as scribbles and doodles of various game characters and stuff, also a list of high scores for certain games and I think bar staff/patrons who have set down challenges or are waiting to be challenged, particularly in fighting games.

Where is this Bar Etiquette exactly? Melbourne could use a gamer bar that's a little less of a dive than the Mana Bar.

it 's awful, and i herd this guy Girl kidnaps children in Uganda!
    We should stop him!
