Tomb Raider Reboot Kicked Into 2013

Tomb Raider Reboot Kicked Into 2013

It was only Friday we were saying amongst ourselves “hey, what happened to the Tomb Raider reboot?” Turns out that set Eidos’ ears on fire, because today we have an answer: it’s not coming out this year.

Originally planned for release in 2012, and looking very promising, it’s now coming out in early 2013. Crystal Dynamics’ Darrell Gallagher released a statement on the matter on the game’s official site, the most important piece of which follows:

We’re doing things that are completely new to Tomb Raider in this game and the additional development time will allow us to put the finishing touches into the game and polish it to a level that you deserve. We believe this is the right choice and I guarantee it will be worth the wait. The game is looking amazing and we can’t wait to show it to everyone at E3 in a few weeks.

To compensate, a new screen for the game was released, which you can see up top. Yippee. Expect to see more next month at E3.

  • good this is flooded with so many games any way and it will make it a better game for it looks amazing

  • This must be the first time in the series’ entire history that Eidos haven’t pushed the game out of the door regardless of its state (Angel of Darkness being basically broken, Underworld being frankly unfinished) in order to get the shareholders their dividends. It’s always so disappointing because when the TR games are good, nothing can touch them. Platforming that works, minimal combat that’s non-intrusive, a wonderful sense of place and isolation that’s never really been replicated or improved upon. It’s good that possibly they might have learned from their mistakes, and while it means we have to wait a year, I’m okay with that.

  • First Quarter 2013 is already filling up…

Bioshock Infinite, Crysis 3, God Of War Ascension, The Sims, Tomb Raider

  • Does it get on anyone else’s nerve that they constantly claim they are delaying because of polishing reasons and not because they are obviously afraid of the crowdedness in the fall?
