Hackers Get Nintendo Virtual Boy Games Running On A 3D TV

In what has to be one of the least requested hacks of all time, the folks over at Bureau Voor Gamers have managed to get games from Nintendo's first attempt at 3D gaming, the Virtual Boy, to run on a modern 3D display.

The hack also lets you play using a Wiimote, but the biggest improvement is that the games are no longer only displayed on burning red LEDs. They're only black and white now like on the Game Boy, but at least you can play for longer than two minutes before you have to walk away and squeeze an entire bottle of eyedrops onto your cornea. But as one of 10 people who actually liked the Virtual Boy, I'm kind of excited about this hack. [Bureau Voor Gamers via Tiny Cartridge via GoNintendo]

Hackers? It looks like he's using a Virtual Boy emulator full screen and video out, then selecting some kind of stereoscopic merged 3D option in the TV? Confused. Is there any kind of hacking here, or is the word being thrown about for journalistic effect?

In the conventional sense of the word, hacker only means coder. A person who infiltrates private systems to obtain restricted data can be a hacker, but that was a media sensationalist version of the term. In recent times, people have started to refer to hardware and software modification as "hacking" - but this ironically doesn't class as that sort of hack.

Thanks for the story, Andrew. I also liked the VB. I think a lot of the headaches induced by the VB were due to improper visual calibration - somebody had set it up and then handed it off to another who just stuck their face into it.

Hacker means coder? I thought it meant anyone who takes something and makes it do something that wasn't originally intended. Or something along those lines.

Also a Virtual Boy fan here. Love mine to bits. The headaches thing is a load of codswallop, it's just as headache-inducing as any 3D screen doing the rounds now. Which to me is zero :P

    Now thats pretty cool!

The VB Wario game was pretty cool.
