So I may be a little late to this party but I just watched an episode of the Game Overthinker from a month or so back called Why Do You Love Video Games? (linked will skip the "story parts" that most people hate about these videos). It got me thinking about some of my reasons. What are yours?

    Because 120 stars wasn't enough
Because I had to catch em all
Because I had to photograph em all
Because a bear and bird that lives in a backpack collected puzzle pieces and musical notes to defeat a rhyming witch
Because I could blow up the Death Star
Because I made the jump on Rainbow Road
    Because I could be Batman
Because I knew Robo may never have existed
    Because I was a Spectre
Because I was the Hero Of Time
    Because I was a Rogue
    Because I was the Dragonborn
    Because I saved the galaxy
Because I made it through the 9th door
    Because of music
    Because of stories
Because of the characters I met
And because of all of you

      Because Xenoblade.

      /thread

That basically summerises 3 of the last 4 entries :)

*last minute recovery due to my poor memory. Forgive me /o\

Because I brought down the Dragon God.

      Because I'm an explorer.
Because immersing myself in other worlds is the only way I can survive this one.

Because VROOM VROOM, I'M READY TO GO! TIME TO LET THE MUH MUH MUH MUH MONDAY NIGHT-RO!

Because I can be whatever I want to be, regardless of if it's actually possible or not.

Can we get a Game of Thrones discussion thread up in here? It can be all in ROT13 or it can be all in engalesish. Whatevs. I just need somewhere to gush.

Alright, I'm going to post this one here, even though nobody will probably see it, or want to read it, but this concerns the books in general, and an idea about Jon. While technically I don't reference anything after book/season 1, this probably still counts as spoilers, particularly for the TV people, though it is only a fan theory, and is probably wrong...

Usually Mr. Strange will say something silly after the show ends which kind of ruins the atmosphere a bit. Not this time. This time he just sat there dumbstruck throughout the end credits and even afterwards.

My recap did not post before and it still might not. If you decode this, it is filled with swear words so, don't read if you take offence to the swears. I mean, I type this up almost at the conclusion of the show and it is when I am at my most passionate/excited. Who am I kidding? You guys watch GoT - swears dont offend you.

My biggest complaint about this episode was that it was too small. Where's the chaos?

    @Virus__
Spot on mate. I've been burned before, but today was the last straw, so to speak. Fun times! I'm REALLY looking forward to getting back to the mainland next week, even if I do feel socially claustrophobic when I'm in a "big city" these days.
There's only one set of traffic lights where I live, and they never change colour anyway!

You in Humpty Do or something?

I'm well beyond the black stump, and beyond any semblance of civilisation.
Genocide's looking like a viable option, though I'll wait for rational thought to return prior to acting upon it.

      Ah, lame man. Very lame.

Oh, OH! New Tim Rogers article up. Just in time for reading while I have breakfast. :D

    http://www.kotaku.com.au/2012/05/how-bad-user-interfaces-are-ruining-video-games-and-other-wonderful-things/

      I'm reading it too! :)

I'm glad I was only preparing my breakfast, and not eating it in the first section though. :P

I've just read the bit about the 360's user interface. I'm now giggling.

Haven't read it yet, but from the title it doesn't seem nearly as controversial as his other stuff was. Slightly disappointing! haha

Read the first few paragraphs and he's discussing a whole lot of pooping and hobos :P

    My night last night:

Cranky two year old will not sleep - up until 10pm.
Basketball game at 10:10 pm (UGH), get home around 11:30.
Parry, riposte, parry fail, flail, stabbed, parry, riposte, parry, normal hit (wut?), parry, riposte, parry fail, stabbed. Murdered vendor, took his sword, leveled up enough to use a different sword instead, had an unbelievable craving for more arrows :P Parry, riposte, hot damn this sword does DAMAGE, parry, riposte, parry fail, stabbed, parry, normal hit (wut the?), parry improving.

Didn't get to play any Dark Souls though.

        Bahahahahahahahaaa! :D
Perfect way to start the morning: candied bacon, a Tim Rogers article, and a great belly laugh. Thank-you!

    Double-posting like a champ.

Just got an email from my publisher who said that the final proof for Book 3 of The Lesser Evil is waiting for him in his office to be approved. Unfortunately, he is clear across the country at the moment. Still, the end is in sight, and the book will be available very, very very veryveryveryvery soon.

    Good times last night.

Was told my motherboard was ready for collection but the service department closes at 5:30pm. That was rather troublesome because I had to get home and then drive to the store, which gets me there about 6pm. I told them that and asked if it was still okay to pick up the motherboard. Asked if I needed to get it put aside so there wasn't any hassle.

They said not to worry and just come in. So I did.

    Fuckers.

I sat around there for 20 minutes while some dude who didn't know what he was doing tried to work out a way to decide which of the motherboards in the pile of motherboards out back was mine. He couldn't. He wanted me to come back before 5:30pm today. If I could have made it to the store while the service department was open, I'd have done it already.

They're now sending it by courier to my office. I don't know what's going on with the other guy who was there for the exact same reason with the exact same motherboard.

Not happy. Had to go and click things while still on my MacBook Air. Had to drink some rum to make it all k.

Definitely a first world problem but just so damned irritating that I have to go through all this hassle for my motherboard. It's the second time that I've taken it in and they've taken a month.

Oh yes, I was so distracted on the drive home that after turning off of the motorway to get to my place, I went straight back on. Autopilot dictates that when I'm at that spot, the typical course of action is to head south towards my parent's place.

    Good times indeed.

      What store is this?

        Umart in Milton.

I've had other stuff returned to them (I swear I'm cursed) and generally had very few hassles. Next time I upgrade my gear, I'm going to look elsewhere. This is just too much hassle.

Ahhh yep, I've been there before. Yeah... not the most helpful bunch of people. What a sucky situation :/

Weird thing that happened this morning. I think I spotted Mr Explody hopping off the same train as me at Flinders Street. I couldn't go up to say hi though, the swarm of humans was too thick :(

That dude needs to get back on TAY stat

I know right?! I think he still shows up on Steam every now and then, I'll give him a poke to see what he's been up to

STRANGE! I have a Diablo 3 guest code for you! I meant to send it last night but got sidetracked! I'll send it tonight.

I was gonna do that, well i have like 3 still to give away.

        *Raises hand*
I could look after one of them for you. I'll make sure to feed it everyday and give it fresh water. I'll take it for walks too.

no worries lambo i will dm you on twitter tonight.

No problem. You have more important things to worry about. *hugs*

    Hey guys!
    Need your help again! :D

I'm involved in a new promotion via Sony team X to promote the new Sny Cybershot HX20, which means i could win the camera itself and a gift voucher for myself and the team i'm in!

All i need you guys to do is simply follow @SonyHX20 on twitter - that's it.
You can also retweet if you like - the more people we get on board, the better!

    Thanks guys and gals :)

One of the prizes i MAY receieve IF we win would be a $200 red balloon gift voucher - which i am considering giving away to a person who follows the twitter account and participates, if that sweetens the deal for you guys.

If you did manage to win, you'd be better off keeping your prizes. How do you decide who gets the voucher? How do you make sure nobody feels bad because they thought they deserved it over who eventually got it?
If you want people's help you're probably better off just saying "Hey,I'm trying to win myself some prizes. Anyone who wants to help me, please do." This group is generous enough that they don't need promises of mythical loot to want to help someone.

You sold your soul to Sony, didn't you? :P

Ruffles loves sony as much as he loves criticising things. Needless to say they are having a june wedding.

Diablo 3 incoming changes and stuff.

A few big ones: gem upgrades will now take 2 gems instead of 3. That seems rather huge. They're also going to buff legendary items across the board (and I just found and sold my first one , oops) and introduce item levels to give an indication of how strong that item should be (so you're not comparing a level 20 legendary with a level 40 magic item).

I am so far behind everyone else in this game. I looked at my active players in my social list last night and everyone was clearly in Nightmare at least, with level 40+ characters. I'm in Act 2 normal with a Barbarian who just got to level 20. My other character is a level 12 or so Wizard.

      Man, that whirlwind.

Yeah I saw that last night :P

        Other than my 43 Barb I have a 31 WD, 24 DH, 15 M and 4 W :/

Yeah, we were doing Nightmare last night. Finished act 1 and moved on to act 2.

I'm running two characters at the moment. My "solo" Witch Doctor, that I don't like that much and my Monk, which I use when playing with everyone else. Both have finished Normal.

It doesn't take that long and it's not hard to get someone to drop in with a slightly over levelled character to go with you. Maybe once you start doing act 3 and 4 content, I could join you with my WD.

I wouldn't mind some more co-op actually, and I'm slightly concerned I'm falling too far behind. I just don't have the time to play as much as I'd like to. An uninterrupted stretch of more than 20 minutes just doesn't seem to be happening except on Friday nights.

A bit of personal background: there are renos going on at our house and I'm at my in-laws. So there's lots of what my uncle calls "housie housie" going on.

I have a feeling that we're all going to roll new characters from time to time. Should make things slightly easier for you to find someone to play with. Hell, if you see someone on in a game by themselves, just whisper them. See if they have a character around your level that they're willing to join you with.

Good suggestion. I guess the main problem is I'm usually not settling down for a solid session.

I have a single level 16 WD, on normal, beginning of Act II. Oh noes :(

TL:DR wish they put the changes into patch notes dot points like usual.
Seems fairly interesting though. I think sometimes Blizzard put a bit too much effort into the 1%.
They stated that only 1.9% of people unlocked inferno mode, yet all their balancing work is based around lvl 60 inferno mode balance.
Just seems like alot of effort for very little return. I'm only lvl 51 in Act 1 of Hell.

This is the preamble to the patch.

@fled, thanks for the warning tweet. I read your comment this morning. Last night I killed the merchant. Oopsie. Oh well, I bought everything I possibly could from him, including about 400 arrows. They should last me pretty well, too, because although I exploited ranged glitches in Demon's Souls, I find that I'd rather toe-to-toe melee in this game.

I love accidentally killing useful NPCs!
Like that time I killed the Pyromancy dude. Best.
      ._.

Oh, it wasn't accidental. I wanted his Uchigitkatana or whatever you call it.

Also, am collecting valuable data for "And Then I Found Ten Souls"

haha, In case you don't know if you attack an NPC by accident you can go to the first bell tower and theres and NPC that will allow you to "Absolve Sins" for a certain price (I think its something like 500*Soul level). This will make the NPC not attack you on sight

Yes, although of course it doesn't bring back a dead NPC!

I killed that merchant and after some Whirlpool advice decided to start again. The sole reason is I needed a bow so I could get the Drake Sword. And in the first 10 or so hours the only way to get a bow is to start as the class that has one already equipped or to buy one from that NPC. I think, now I know the game well, I could probably go get a bow inside two hours, but to start - especially as someone who had never played a Souls game before - I really needed that Drake Sword.

Yeah, I bought the bow, bought the arrows, bought some armour and maybe a weapon too (I don't recall), bought all his keys and boxes, and then took him down when he wasn't useful anymore.

Sounds reasonable to me. You really don't need him once you have those things. And there are only two ways to get an Uchi. That's one of them.

When I accidentally attack someone, I commit to it.
          That's how I roll.
          Also by rolling a lot.

I do that too. Near the end of my first game I accidentally struck the large blacksmith. I wasn't happy about it but I put him down.

    Sooo... http://pastebin.com/tQpynGDX

Who has their zombie plan ready to put into action?

I have my box of vinyl records! #hipster

I don't know about you guys but I'm gonna bust into that caravan and winnebago joint down the road and hold up in the giant tank-like one they've got. with a huge supply of shotguns. and snacks!

    Mornin All!

The senior guy from NZ is over here for the week, and happens to have a desk with a great view of my screen. This means I can't play Minecraft or be on TAY as much :(

Is anyone else thinking of upgrading their PC's to try and cash in at tax time? My current understanding that if you can legitimately claim to use your pc for work, you can claim up to $800 on your tax in parts for 'repair'. This beats claiming a whole new pc, as you have to claim for degenerated value over three years or something. There are probably many flaws with my logic but I really need that $600 video card for, uh, editing my database. Those command prompts are graphics intensive!

I'm also getting null reference exceptions when I can quite clearly see whilst debugging that there are no nulls. Fun.

This intrigues me. Anyone confirm this tax stuff?

        http://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/content.aspx?doc=/content/35042.htm&pc=001/002/013/012/005&mnu=924&mfp=001/002&st=&cy=

This might be outdated, but from what I can gather you can claim it all provided each individual part is under $300. Might still be handy to pick up some hard-drives and extra RAM.

Well I Tay at work and on my home computer, does that count?

      Bollocks. http://mwomercs.com/forums/topic/9580-eqrg-equestria-royal-guard/

        BWAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I can only imagine what they will name their Mechs :D

Although in all fairness their insignia is pretty well designed.

Some of those propaganda posters are really good.

So i made a write up about my trip to finland, or more specifically about being in the Redlynx offices over at the official forums. Check it out if you are interested.

Larger article coming up on Kotaku perhaps in a month or two, this is just a sneal peak.

Also, if anyone is still interested in a weekly Trials Evo comp for all skill levels, and i have a prize this week, let me know. Suggest a track and we can race it. Medium or easier.. first suggestion gets it. Cant be the ones we've already raced! Cheers,

I read the whole entry and it sounds like you had a lot of fun. You look so happy in those picture, you must have been smiling the whole time.

Start my new job tonight \o/
16hr working days for the rest of the next 2 days /o\

I will miss weekends. I guess that's one of the advantages of working a 8:30-5 Mon-Fri job.

You got a new job already? :O grats!

I thought you were looking for a Sydney job?

It's my new/old job. I'm going back to the cinema to do projection work. It's just a temp job to keep money coming in while I look for a job in Sydney. Helps being friends with managers sometimes haha.

          Grats man!

I'm having a difficult time balancing my sewing, gaming and housework. I have loads of sewing to do, but I'm up to a part in my daughter's skirt that I don't particularly find fun so I've been procrastinating. I try and do housework but it just all seems kind of pointless with no vacuum cleaner. So in the end I just sit and play games.

In other news, I have a washing machine full of Batman fabrics. I just need the weather to stay sunny enough for them to dry and then I can start making Batman skirts. That will be so much fun I'll probably forget to play games. :P

    @Dark Souls people

Last weekend I started a new game (complete new character) in Dark Souls. This time I'm going to go with a hybrid build. Going to level Int / Dex. I will use spells as my main source of damage and a Rapier (when I finally get one) as my melee weapon. I'm curious as to if anyone has ever invested into Pyromancy? I am finding it so much fun and I'm kind of sad I didn't invest any souls/time into it on my tank character.
    ...
Basically the way Pyromancy works is spells doesn't scale off stats but it scales off a "Pyromancy Glove" so even if you have like 2 INT you can still cast spells (assuming you have the attunement slots for spells). Also they have nailed pyromancy perfectly in Dark Souls. No better felling then watching your hand light on fire then throwing a fireball causing a huge explosion.

I started with a Pyromancer. I only picked him because he was the only one who started off at Level One so he was a blank slate. I used the Pyro spells a fair bit but be careful if you're using them as your main damage because it takes a fair bit of time to cast.
I loved setting things on fire though, and discovering the advanced Pyromancy teachers was fun.

Never really bothered myself, went almost pure melee and used my few attunement slots for faith spells.
Since you can only use spells a certain number of times in Dark it might get tricky on long trips or lengthy boss fights.

Well so far I have found that just using a dex based weapon (like a rapier) is fine for getting through the common enemies. Also I have 4 Attunement slots now all filled with offensive spells so I usually find it difficult to use all my spells. Although it was difficult starting out.

My character was mostly melee with a pyro glove as a backup weapon for powerful enemies. A high-level pyro glove really does a lot of damage. It's worth it!

Good lord I knew it wouldn't be easy to get into TAY but your all talkin in a different language and the comments just keep coming. How do you all do it?

Anyway names CJ and if you'll have me I'd like to attempt to become part of your community I like video games and coffee.

Hi CJ. Welcome. You'll get used to the madness.

      WELCOME FRIEND!

and yes Video Games / coffee are extremely amazing. Also when you get a chance head over to Gravitar (http://en.gravatar.com/) and make an account. It lets you upload a personal picture so you don't have to use the default Kotaku one (unless you want to :P).

      Welcome CJ!
Welcome to TAY. As Shane said, you get used to the madness. That other language you speak of is rot13 which people use to post potential spoilers.

Or it could just be Rocketman - he is pretty hard to understand sometimes.

Haha. I actually had a line about Rocketman at the end but deleted it because I decided it was too mean and I can't be mean to Rocketman. He is a good guy who doesn't afraid of anything.

      Hey CJ. Welcome. :)
If people post spoilers they usually translate it via rot13.com so people don't inadvertently spoil others. And "ctrl F5" sometimes has to be used these days when refreshing the TAY page because otherwise the comments won't update. Those are the only two actual different languages I can see on this page, the rest is probably easier to understand once you get to know us. :P

I've noticed some Al Bhed occasionally, too. Too bad I can read/write/speak it at all :(

Oh, we also have a large list of us all which contains things like our gamertags etc.
      tinyurl.com/taynames
Feel free to add yourself to the list and us to ALL of the devices that you have.

      Welcome!
You'll find that there are periods where the comments just keep coming and others where this place is dead. Monday mornings are chaos because everyone comes in to boast about their awesome weekends. Night time has been pretty quiet these days, though.

HAPPY BORTHDAY, NOW TAKE OFF YOUR PANTS.

and with that, you have displayed the best and the worst of TAY :p

It might actually be the single greatest sentence ever written.

Welcome! It takes time getting used to the speed around here. The unwritten rule of TAY is that you just focus on the current page. I usually go back when I have time to see what people have been saying, though. :P

Cheers all. I'll check the links later when I'm on my comp instead of the ol iPhone

        'sup CJ.
welcome to TAY. enjoy your stay. don't feed the animals.

If you encounter Loops there are 3 rules:
Don't let it in direct sunlight.
          Don't get it wet.
And whatever you do, don't feed him after midnight.

      Welcome CJ!

Oh and for the most part the discussions usually happen on the most recent page (or the previous page if the new page is still fairly new). If you want to reply to something on a previous page you can always do an @ thing on a new page in hopes that the person will see it ie. @CJ welcome!. Not everyone is on TAY all the time so they still might miss it though :P

      HELLO!
      Welcome!

OH MY GOD YOU'RE FROM SAN ANDREAS!?

Coffee is fine and all but WHERE IS THE CAKE

is dragons dogma worth getting or should i just wait for game of thrones next week?

Apparently Dragon's Dogma is the better of the two games.
Did you play the Dragon's Dogma demo? That would be the best way to judge whether it's worth getting or not.

played the demo but it didnt show much plus it had overpowered characters hard to tell

Did you have fun while you were playing it? Did it make you want to see more? Did you like the game mechanics? If the answer to any of these is "yes" and you're looking for a game to play right now then maybe Dragon's Dogma is for you.
No idea about Game of Thrones though, a lot of reviewers didn't like it.
Maybe Kingdoms of Amalur or The Witcher 2 would be better?

            Good suggestions from Strange.

Also, have you played Dark Souls?

own all them lol thinking of taking back ghost recon and getting dragons dogma i didnt mind it but alot of ppl are saying its hard like monster hunter that puts me off

I have a haircut today, The hairdresser is ridiculously attractive she could be a part time model but she would probably still have to keep her normal job. Anyway i hate haircuts because i have 2 personalities. The over the top do random things to keep myself entertained which seems to be the guy who everyone likes and the shut in little kid who is still scared shitless of people and women. I mean i am 20 for gods sake i shouldn't be scared of getting a haircut, i think it comes from the fact i have nothing to discuss with this woman. I mean what do you even talk about. I don't care about town gossip or who is sleeping with who.

Awkward 20 minutes is awkward. Also she gives head massages which are like so nice.

You're not the only one who isn't a fan of them.
I get antsy whenever I feel the scissors near my ear, and I cringe whenever the hairdresser fires up the electric trimmer.

You talk to your hairdressers? I sit there silently staring at the mirror thinking 'don't move, don't say anything, if you do they will shave your hair off without a second thought'.

cut your own hair. all the cool people do that. that way, you can only be awkward with yourself.

Most of my haircuts take place in complete silence with the occasional "how's the weather today?" type thing. I'm not sure if I look hard to talk to or they don't care because I get the cheapest haircut available xD

Hairdresser head massages are best massages.
Also, I'm friends with a couple hairdressers, and it turns out that they're just as disinterested/apprehensive about sparking conversation with unknown customers as you are occasionally. It's just a job, like any other.

My hairdressers speak some sort of... foreign... language.
So I just sit there silently.
      Best.

I pay my hairdresser friends for hour-long shampoo/head massage sessions whenever I see them. They hate me for it ^.^

Does she speak asian, because you know things in common.

The reason I have long hair is not because it makes me look amazingly sexy (it does) but because I hate having to sit there and have a conversation with the hairdresser. I should probably point out that the hairdresser is actually a friend. I'm just THAT awkward.

I fear the hairdressers, too. And because I'll often get my hair dyed as well as cut my visits there take longer than 20 minutes. I hate the pressure to talk. I can't even imagine how bad it is for the actual hairdresser, they have to try and talk to every single client.

I couldn't imagine paying to have my hair coloured, though I guess I'm okay with settling for a substandard result once I'm done doing it myself.

I hear there is a salon in Sydney where the hairdressers are all women and topless... maybe that could help alleviate some fear? Yay distractions

As for the haircut thing, I like to go in there, get it done and leave. I hate when they start telling you their life story and asking about your weekend etc. Sometimes I feel like turning around and saying "shut up and do your job" but I'm not that mean so I suck it up. I always feel like the take ages when they start gossiping

That sounds like a lie. If it isn't a lie it is awesome. But no way in hell i would go there.

I did a google search for you Rocketman.
          www.hotcuts.com.au
          *****Probably NSFW*****
To be honest I thought it was a more professional establishment. The website is pretty crappy so I wouldn't get my hopes up. There isn't even an address, how am I supposed to visit you're place of business without an address?

Wow asking a bunch of awkward people how to get over my awkwardness is pretty funny. I do actually manage to talk with her mostly about how hot she thinks i am and how if she wasn't in a commited relationship she would be taking me into the backroom and take me to funky town if you know what i mean. Well that's what i say to the dude i work with who's brother she is. I am the worst person alive.

Silence is as awkward as you perceive it to be.
If you are all surly or noticeably uncomfortable then it will be awkward but if you are just nice, polite but comfortable with silence then the hairdresser may not feel like they have to make small talk either.

Woah town gossip. That's when you know it's a small town.

My motherboard has apparently been sent out. They were meant to tell me when that happened because I have no faith in them being able to do anything. This is a pretty piss poor effort.

Welcome to the awesome customer support of Umart! Though i'll be honest I have never had a single problem with their Southport store.
