Tell Us Dammit

We're fast approaching July, and some of you may remember what a large group of us did last July -- we played all those unloved, untouched games atop our massive gaming piles of shame! We committed to not starting a single new release game! This month myself, and Shameless Gaming ideas man Trjn, are keen to do Shameless Gaming all over again. But first I thought it might be a good idea to take stock -- what games are currently on your pile of shame, and what games would you like to play for Shameless Gaming month?

My pile of shame is astronomical, but here are some I'd like to knock off during the month of July.

- Mass Effect 3 - Child of Eden - Assassin's Creed Revelations - From Dust - Outland - Max Payne 3 - Battlefield 3 - Modern Warfare 3 - De Blob 2 - Dead Space 2

Yeah, a pretty long list. I'm hoping to knock off at least four or five of these during July.

What about you guys, what's sitting on your pile of shame, and are you keen to get involved in Shameless Gaming this July?

Borderlands and Dungeon Siege 3. I like to finish a game before I move onto the next one, I suppose that comes from when I was a kid and my folks only bought us new ones after we finished the old. :P

(Also abandoning a game midway is the same as standing up and leaving a movie. :D)

Borderlans is really a co-op game. You kinda need friends to play it with, so playing it by yourself can sometimes feel like a real drag.

But... I have no friends. :P

Then ask people online to play. I would have played the game more if I knew other people who wanted to play the game.

I can empathize with this - I don't care for playing with strangers online, and I have only one gamer friend. He only plays BF3. 'Tis lonely :(

Meh, I'm not really the same. You can only expand your friends list by playing and talking with strangers, after that you can only hope that they're still interested in the game. Sometimes I look through their achievements and guess how long it's been since they've played a certain game and ask them if they're still interested. Just recently found someone who's up for ODST runs.

My main problem was that all those co-op games or co-op modes, like ODST, GRAW, Rainbow Six, Borderlands, Horde mode, etc. I always viewed them as something you can really only play with close friends, usually via LANning. But then I found out my friends were a bunch of stuck-up, selfish assholes who only ever called me for a ride or for my LANs and drained my internet, so now I have no choice but to look for online players who might still be interested.

It's weird, co-op is finally going in a direction I like -- joint co-operation over blowing each other up, but you're right it does sort of demand a closer tie with the person you play with.

I'd say it demands dedication. If someone is only interested in co-op play for an achievement then they're less likely to be in it for the fun and will get annoyed if you fail and have to start over again since to them it means they wasted their time.

I'd forgotten I still have to finish 'From Dust'.

    Kingdoms of Amalur
    Harley Quinns Revenge DLC
    From Dust

I've been pretty ruthless with my pile; but I was planning on replaying the Halo games before the launch of Halo 4... so I may include those too.

I'm not including Skyrim... I don't think it's possible to finish that game.

But I'd forgotten I still have
StarCraft 2 and Homeworld 2 sitting on my PC.

I've actually done a pretty good job of finishing what I start in the past 12 months, so my pile consists mainly of older incomplete stuff (e.g. Metroid Prime 3, COD4) and newer stuff that I haven't really started yet like Rage, Just Cause 2, some the humble bundle games, etc.

Oh, I've also only just reached Act II in Diablo III too!

I took stock of my pile of shame last night. It's not as bad as last year but there are still a few titles that really stand out.

Dead Space and Half Life 2 are the big two for me to focus on. Other things like Skate 3 and Crysis 2 are also on the list though. It's going to be a crazy month, especially if I have to cope with being an ideas man.

Half-Life 2? Are you insane man!?

It gets better. I bought the Orange Box on 360 when it came out.

        Only played Portal.

Rebought the Orange Box on PC shortly after.

        Only played TF2.

It's just that game that I've never gotten around to playing. Which is why this year, I will finish it and all of the currently released episodes.

I finished Half Life 2 earlier this month and let me tell you - for a game the drags in parts (especially the long long levels like Water Hazard, Sandtraps, Highway 17 and Nova Prospect) the final 3 chapters are superb - a stunning example of how to end a game.

I'll take his Half Life 2 and raise it a Half Life 1. I've never got the past where I leave the energy chamber thingy (or whatever, I dunno) and run down a corridor.

Yet I've finished Half Life 2 twice and both its episodes and loved it.

I was looking into setting up OSX compatibility + high res packs for it a couple of weeks ago. I might push further to get it done in time for SGM!

Yeah, I love this. Since the Pile of Shame thing last year I've started keeping a running list of shame on my phone which I need to finish before I spend too much on new games. So far it totals:

    Deus Ex HR (ps3)
    Superbrothers Ep (iPad)
    Skyward Sword
    mariogalaxy 2
    Bastion PC
    ICO and SOTC HD
    Witcher 2 Ed (PC)
    GTA IV episodes
    Prince of Persia 2007

Thats it! Not too bad really.

Man, you've got some good games ahead of you. I'm currently playing through Sworcery on the iPad now. (I've had it since last August or something, just never had headphones handy. The game insists on them. :P)

The "Pile of Shame" is a bit vague since last year you did mention that sometimes it could be for not finishing the campaign, not finishing all game modes, or even not getting all achievements. Would be a bit easier if you specified what sort of Pile of Shame to list. Because if you're counting 100% achievements then I have about 50 games I keep meaning to go back to.

It's somewhat intentionally vague so that people can make up their own rules and not feel too constricted. Generally, it's anything that you're not done with. If you plan on 100%ing a bunch of games and haven't, they're on the pile. If you only care about beating the main campaign for them, they're not.

I will make an effort to define things a bit better in July.

Probably being too vague can be annoying, some people would consider not reaching prestige 15 in CoD to go onto the Pile of Shame. If it was just, "Campaign completed" then my pile would be smaller (like, 10, sometimes I buy into the deals and have no time for them). Some people might not want to buy the DLC for New Vegas, while others would consider them forcing the game into the pile.
If it's achievements then that is harder since I'm sure a lot of people would like to get them but nobody is interested in the multiplayer anymore (still looking for people to play Rainbow Six, GRAW and ODST).

That's the problem. Everyone has their own rules for what counts as finished for games. Hell, most people have different rules for different games.

I'm thinking that listing a few ways to define finished and then having people apply whichever one best fits. There's stuff in the works for this but we only really just got the ball rolling for things yesterday.

I think that it should be intentionally vague, it lets people set up their own standards and goals. Someone might consider reaching prestige 15 in CoD something that justifies taking it off their pile while others might not even consider multiplayer games on their list. It's really up to each person. Maybe maybe putting a statement saying "what you consider on your pile of shame is up to you" would help make it somewhat clearer.

For me it's just beating the main game. I rarely replay my games or go ahead and 100% them but if I feel the need too then I'll also consider that game on my list. On a rare occasion I'll play a game that just doesn't 'click' for me and I really don't want to finish it (wasn't a fan of L.A. Noire). I'm not going to force myself to beat it just to tick it off my pile so if I feel like I'm done with a game I'll take it off.

I loved L.A. Noire, but I understand what you mean. I didn't like Heavenly Sword at all. Never completed it, but don't consider it to be something I'm going to go back to ever.

My pile of shame is sitting at a mate's house in the form of his copies of Uncharted 1 & 2 - shameful because I've played number 3 but never got around to the first two so I'm hoping he'll trade...

Other than that just a bunch of humble bundles as well but I don't think they count.
Man I need to get some more games before July

    Mass Effect 3
    Darkness 2

That's about it I think.... Got LP chainsaw yesterday but since it's new I won't count it. :)

This probably isn't all of them but...

    Dark Souls
    Heavy Rain
    Sonic Colours Wii
    Kirby's Epic Yarn
    Bioshock 2
    RE Revelations
    Mafia II
    Far Cry 2

I've actually been getting through my pile in recent weeks (other games besides that lot up there) and when I take holidays soon I'm going to make my way through Dark Souls. I just want to see an ending sequence in these games, I won't bother to find all the hidden stuff unless I'm really enjoying myself.

    My list is huuuuuuuuuuuuuuge.
The only Gamecube games I've completed is Windwaker and Smash Bros Brawl. D=
I need to keep track of them all @[email protected]
Also, what do people think of casual games? Can you consider them complete? If so, then how?

Depends what type of casual game. For those physics/puzzle level based ones like Where's My Water, Cut the Rope etc. I'd consider something like beating a majority of the levels.

Yeah, and I’ve heard the PS2 stands for Playstation 2. Playstation was created by Sony. Sony sorta reminds me of Sanyo and I had a teacher called Ms Sanyo. I stepped on her pet spider and she yelled at me.

        Conclusion: I eat spatula.

Dark Souls. I'm never going to finish that, though. Just can't get into it like I did Demon's Souls.

Apart from that I was doing OK until Sony came along with their "Instand Game Collection" for PS+ subscribers. Pfft. Instant Game Collection. More like Instant Pile of Shame. And I suspect they'll be adding to that pile of shame faster than I can get through it. Bastards :P

I think I'm just going to stick with my PS3 pile of shame for now. I'd hate to have to go back through my unfinished PS2 games. My list below is not really a pile of shame per say, it's just split into various categories:
    1. Infamous 2
    2. Renegade Ops
    3.LBP 2
    4. Warhammer Space Marine
This category consists of the PS+ games I want to finish.

    1. Darksiders
    2.Brutal Legend
    3. Red Dead Redemptiom
    4. Resisitance 3
I started these games but stopped playing for some reason.

    1. Far cry 2
    2. Burnout Paradise
    3.FIFA 11
    4. Civilization Revolution

I guess I've sort of started already. Just finished Cave Story, started Metro 2033. Be happy if I got through that. Then I have a pretty massive backlog. Must be in the 30's. I think the high priorities are Darksiders, Kingdoms of Amalur and Alpha Protocol. Could probably also finish the main quest in Skyrim and Skyward Sword.

I actually went through making a list yesterday (I was bored :P)

    Deus Ex: Human Revolution

    Fallout New Vegas (unplayed)
Grand Theft Auto IV: Ballad of Gay Tony (unplayed)
    Rage (unplayed)

    Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood (unplayed)
    BioShock 2 (unplayed)
    infamous 2 (unplayed)
Metal Gear Solid HD Collection (unplayed)
    Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 (unplayed)
    Prince of Persia Trilogy (unplayed)
Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands (unplayed)
    Sly 3 (unplayed)
    Tales of Graces f (unplayed)
    Valkyria Chronicles

    Metroid Prime Trilogy
    Pandora’s Tower (unplayed)
    Pikmin 1/2
    Resident Evil (unplayed)
    Resident Evil 4 (unplayed)
    Super Paper Mario (unplayed)
    Tales of Symphonia 2 (unplayed)
    The Last Story

    Eternal Darkness (unplayed)
Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes (unplayed)
    Starfox Adventures (unplayed)

    Final Fantasy VIII

    Resident Evil: Revelations

And that's not all of them :P. There's others I've omitted even though I've rarely played them...

I used to think my pile was big but then I noticed some other Kotaku members literally have piles as big as my game collection! Kudos to all of you with small piles :D!

(@Doc, Neg0 still have those pics of your piles?)

Hm, that's the same size as my DS pile of shame D=

scree stop buying games and spend all the money on Xenoblade! :D

I have a spreadsheet at home that does the same thing. I also created it when I was bored!

Ah yes, I think I remember seeing it once!

Is that the one with notes for each one? If I recall it had some swearing at Demon's Souls?

If not then I must be thinking of someone else's list :P

That was indeed me. I wasn't swearing at Demon's Souls, I just said that I was too chicken to go any further, or to even start Dark Souls!

I think I have my photo somewhere, but it's kind of old. It's probably bigger now. :( Circa October 2011. One game removed, at least 15 added since then.

Knowing my usual approach, my pile will probably grow instead of shrinking. :(

    Mine is huge as well:

For starters, there's the Humble Bundles, Crysis, Mass Effect 1, Blur, Metro 2033, NFS Most Wanted (picked up the cheap PC version with Underground 1&2 before MW2 comes out)
Also grabbed all the Descent and Freespace games on GOG.

    Then the consoles

    Batman Arkham Asylum
    NFS Hot Pursuit
    Sly Cooper Trilogy
    Zak & Daxter Trilogy
    De Blob 1&2
    Metroid Prime 3
    Metroid Other M
    Mario Galaxy

That's just off the top of my head. Pretty sure my shame is bigger than that!

My pile o' shame is humongous.
For Shameless Gaming Month I'd probably just try and finish Dragon Age 2 and Deus Ex: HR.
I started DA2 when I was already in the middle of 2 other games that I was playing so I've always intended to go back to it but haven't yet.
And Deus Ex took too long to arrive in the mail so by the time it arrived I wasn't as hyped to play it and I was too invested in another game.

I also haven't finished Dark Souls and Skyrim but I don't count them as being on the Pile because I keep coming back to them.

Deus Ex is amazingly good. I suggest watching Blade Runner, maybe Gattaca too and you'll totally be in the mood to play.

Knock off Dragon Age 2... it's really not that long.
You can ignore a lot of the sidequests... and the stabby stabby is fairly quick.

Well the only games I finished during Shameless Gaming month last year were the F.E.A.R. trilogy, going back and finishing 1 and 2 after finishing 3.

This year is trickier. I have accumulated more unfinished games and some I haven't even started. But I am also expecting Lollipop Chainsaw to arrive next week, and I also plan to pick up Prototype 2, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, and Max Payne 3.

At my current consumption rate, I'll have trouble knocking out the single player campaigns of that lot before Borderlands 2 is out.

But ok, here goes. Here are the games I currently have in my unfinished pile that I will try to sit down and finish once July has officially started:

    - Assassin's Creed: Revelations
    - BioShock 2
    - Resident Evil 5
    - Silent Hill: Downpour
    - Darksiders
    - LEGO Batman

These are all games I have either never played, or played so briefly that I never gave them a real chance. I am not going to try to go back to a game that I have abandoned, like Arkham City which I quit after losing my save progress, I will leave those games for another time. Perhaps never. I am not ashamed of them, so I don't consider them "shameful".

    Currently Playing:
Fallout: New Vegas (Pile of shame

    -The Last Story
    -Pandora's Tower
    -Valkyria Chronicles I
    -Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.

I have been pretty disciplined with my pile of shame for the last year and have tried to finish a game before buying a new one. That said there are always a few and my list is:

    Assassin's Creed Revelations
    Witcher 2
    GTA 4

I was going to use July and August this year for a series of retrospective gaming sessions covering Bioshock 1 and 2, Metro 2033 and Far Cry 2.

    Maybe Dark Souls and HL2.
That's about all that's in my pile that's tangible (I don't count most racing, fighting or "casual" games as part of my pile)

    Assassins Creed 1
    Assassins Creed 2
    Deus Ex Revolution
    Gears of War
    Gears of War 2
    Fallout 3
    Halo 3:ODST
    BF2:Bad Company 2
    Arkham Asylum
    Red Dead Redemption(Undead version)
    Half Life 2(Orange box ed.)
    Just Dance 3
    Infinite Undiscovery

This is my current pile of shame list might be bigger since i'm not at home. shocking right?

      Halo ODST man... sooo gooood.

Halo 3: ODST is a good game? might start that after I finish up with lollipop chainsaw.

People criticise it, but it's a really solid campaign, the night sections are really moody and tense and while it falls short of being a proper sandbox (it's not meant to be a sandbox) the campaign is very engaging. Plus the characters in it are great.

Currently playing Rayman Origins at the moment, it's finished, but I'm hoping to 100% clear it by the end of the month, some of those time trials are going to be hell, worse than the Land of the Livid Dead.

So, my list is long like others... but I'm going to focus on 4 games I think, 1 each from the last 3 years, plus a title from the expanding HD updates range.

From 2009 - Brutal Legend (I didn't get that far into it, so the game hadn't 'changed' for me)
From 2010 - Darksiders (with the sequel coming up and looking great, I need to start the original)
From 2011 - Shadows Of The Damned (again with the release of Lollipop Chainsaw, another I need to start)
HD Classic - Ratchet & Clank (this collection should be out by the end of June, so I will play through the original again)

and for a 2012 game, I'll look to focus on Uncharted : Golden Abyss, I started it, but I'm still seem to boot up other Vita titles instead.

I'm going to focus on Dark Souls. After that, Deus Ex: HR. I'm kidding myself if I think I'll get more time than that. Will have a 2-6 week old baby for the month of July :)

I've been slowly going back and finishing off a few games, but def got some I need to get done with.

    Recently finished:
    Infamous 2

    Need to finish:
    Darksiders (almost done)
Deus Ex HR (also almost done)
    Mafia 2
Mortal Kombat (this is especially hard since I'm a street fighter man through and through)
    MGS Peace walker
    Skyrim (obviously)
    Dead Nation
    Alien Vs Predator
    Final Fantasy 13

What I play instead of finishing above games:
    Skate 2
Skate 3 (making my own parks based on famous skate spots... I 'm a skate nerd)
