This Is Why Everyone Was Hating On Steel Battalion Today

Maybe you're thinking to yourself, "Geez, Evan, you sure made Steel Battalion sound like a terrible experience in your review today." Damn right I did and deservedly so, might I add. And it wasn't just me. Over at Polygon, Justin McElroy rounds up a few other game critics who related just how unplayable this Kinect game is.

But maybe you need more. Maybe you need visual proof of just how annoying

Things to keep in mind:

-Before video editor Chris Person and I started shooting, I spent about 15 minutes just trying to calibrate the game to recognise me. The console's Kinect tuner could read me just fine so I have to assume it's something about how the game was parsing that data that was awry.

-What you're seeing is drawn from the first few sections of Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor. As the game progresses, more threats get thrown at you, things get hairier and the level of frustration gets even higher.

See? Terrible, isn't it? Shame on you, Capcom and From Software.

If the game is that bad, how possibly could the developers release the game.
Not a fan of Kinect, but really developers seem to be the problem and not the tech.

Angry Joe had the same issues. The controls just don't work.

    Graphics look pretty decent.
Tacked on natural input = fail.

I never had any real issues with the demo, other than that the game was pretty ordinary. All the Kinect controls seemed to work ok.

Strange I had tons of issues with the Demo, I could pull myself towards the tiny view screen but never could push myself away from it.

      I couldn't even shake the FNG's hand.

I knew there was something wrong with the controls when you had to gesture in a specific way to turn around to view your crew. Rather than just sweep left or right with either hand you have to do it with a specific hand in a specific way, which felt so unnatural and clumsy to me. It only got worse from there... I really, really wanted to like this game :(

JUST GIVE US SOME STEEL BATALLION ACTION ON A REGULAR FUCKING INPUT DEVICE

SOMETHING WITH A LOT OF BUTTONS SO THAT WE'RE ABLE TO PERFORM EVERY ACTION

GEE I SURE HOPE SOMEONE CREATES SUCH AN INPUT DEVICE ONE DAY

    - Posted from my Keyboard.

Hopefully it doesn't require a shift key, because I think yours is buggered...

I want to use my Steel Battalion controller. I want to be able to pull out a controller the size of an average family sedan (cue joke about the original Xbox controller) and have to go through a manual start up sequence each mission. I wnat that glaring red eject button to be sitting under its perspex cap taunting me, reinding me that if I'm late in hitting it I lose all my save games.
Steel Battalion kinect? No interest whatsoever.

Yep something like the MEK FU... http://www.kotaku.com.au/tags/mek-fu/
