A Love Letter To The Collect-o-Thon Platformer

In this "anything for an opportunity to feature Sly Cooper" edition of Speak Up on Kotaku, commenter GiantBoyDetective pronounces his love for platforming games that have you find countless things.

The Sly Cooper Collection has been sitting at the top of my backlog for a good while now and I finally got around to playing it again last night. I haven't even tried 2 and 3, but the original is exactly the kind of game I love.

I know some people hate platformers where you have to collect loads of things, but those are my favourite kinds. Donkey Kong 64 was a collect-o-thon and love that game to pieces. Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro. These are the games that truly make me love gaming.

Are there other platformer titles I've somehow over looked on the PS3? Sonic games seem to be the only ones I can't get in to.

About Speak Up on Kotaku: Our readers have a lot to say, and sometimes what they have to say has nothing to do with the stories we run.

Ratchet and Clank - total collect-a-thon and great games, HD Trilogy and 3 current-gen titles to choose from. Also Jak and Daxter HD. As for other current-gen platformers... not much :(

I really do miss platformers :( They were everywhere last gen, and now there's almost nothing apart from Mario galaxy.

I still maintain that some of the best ones were the spongebob games. Say what you want about licensed games, but the spongebob ones were actually really good. They're crap now though.

Got sly Cooper for $2 from the dicksmith sales but have yet to play it, far to many games to play.

The ratchet and clank series is a great place to start. The HD collection just released and you can get the 2 PS3 games for cheap (plus the downloadable quest for booty of course.)

I was thinking this the other day. I adored these games.
But where are the new ones this generation? There were so many, now, less so.
