    • As influential the 2D Mario platformers were, I have always considered them to be the prime example of the worst aspects of the genre. The levels were completely linear, and too reliant on bottomless pits for difficulty. The only Mario games that moved away from this level design were the two Super Mario World games, and they’re my favourite Mario games (Yoshi’s Island in particular) coincidentally.

Sonic has always had the better level design, with every level having at least two to three major pathways leading to the end goal, and instead of relying on bottomless pits to make difficulty, the game used its momentum mechanics as a skill meter i.e. if you were skilled enough (or familliar enough with the level) you could blast through the game like Sonic should.

Those who are bad at platformers has to plog about in the lower reaches of the levels which were deliberately designed to be slower, filled with spikes and enemies.

I know there are many who would disagree with me, saying that a platformer needs only to present one path to be good, and maybe its my deep appreciation for the Metroidvania genre that makes me want that same sense of exploration from my platforming games.

  • Not to be a fan boy or Wang to make broadly sweeping statements but… Galaxy 2 on the Wii and Super Mario 3D Land on the 3DS were decent. Might order the sonic book as well
