Steve Wozniak, aka Woz, was one of the co-founders of Apple back in 1976. When he left the company in 1987 (though he technically remains an employee to this day, drawing a nice salary), he needed something to do.
One of those things was to become a Tetris champion.
In a candid Q&A on Gizmodo earlier today, Woz talked about his tenure as the top-ranked Tetris player in Nintendo Power magazine’s monthly rankings, which began in 1988 and continued for so long that Nintendo told him his name had been there too many damn times, and that they wouldn’t print it again.
So he racked up another high score, told them his name was “Evets Kainzow” (Steve Wozniak spelled backwards), and hey, it worked. Well, sort of.
“When I got the magazine I’d forgotten doing this and was worried that a foreigner from the next city over (I used Saratoga instead of Los Gatos so they wouldn’t catch on) had a score up in my range”, he said. “I got worried but then remembered my joke. Whew!”
