Many Consoles, One Game To Rule Them All...

You may or may not know this, but ex-Gizmodo Editor Alex Kidman is actually a huge video game collector. Seriously. He has more old consoles and video games than any human being I know personally. He's currently doing a hypothetical: if he could only keep one video game from all the consoles he has ever owned, which one would it be and why? I thought I'd ask you guys and girls the same question.

Alex is doing the whole thing in-depth, one post at a time. So far he's looked at the Atari 2600 and the Master System, for which he's chosen Space Invaders and Bubble Bobble respectively.

It's got me thinking what my list would be. So here it is!

Spectrum 128k: Midnight Resistance Master System: California Games Game Boy: The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening Amiga: Monkey Island 2: Lechuck's Revenge SNES: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past PlayStation: Resident Evil Nintendo 64: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Game Boy Advance: Metroid Fusion PlayStation 2: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Xbox: Halo: Combat Evolved GameCube: Metroid Prime Nintendo DS: Trauma Center PSP: Loco Roco Wii: Mario Galaxy Xbox 360: Red Dead Redemption PS3: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots 3DS: Super Mario 3D Land PS Vita: Rayman Origins

Comments

That's really cool. The really hard part would be to pick only one from that list.

    Game Boy: Pokemon Blue
    Playstation: Final Fantasy VIII
Playstation 2: Metal Gear Solid 3
    Playstation Portable: Lumines 2
    PS3: Borderlands

    Sega Master System: Alex Kidd
    Sega Mega Drive: Sonic 2
    SNES: Donkey Kong Country 2
    N64: Ocarina of Time
    PS: Metal Gear Solid
    PS2: GTA San Andreas
    Gamecube: Windwaker
    Xbox: Halo
    Xbox 360: Dragon Age: Origins
    PS3: Uncharted 2
    Wii: Mario Galaxy
    Gameboy: Pokemon Blue
    Gameboy Advance: Golden Sun
    DS: Lufia 2 remake

Couldn't you pick any other master system game and still get Alex Kidd if you had the right console though... double up!

Amiga: Monkey Island 2: Lechuck’s Revenge
    SNES: Harvest Moon
    PlayStation: Vagrant Story
Nintendo 64: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Game Boy Advance: Harvest Moon: More Friends of Mineral Town
    PlayStation 2: Atelier Iris
GameCube: The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
    Nintendo DS: Pokemon Platinum
    PSP: Patapon
    Wii: Mario Galaxy 2
    Xbox 360: Bayonetta
    PS3: Disgaea 4
    3DS: Mario Kart 7
    PS Vita: Gravity Rush

Awesome idea! Be interesting to see everyones choices. Here goes mine...

    Commodore 64: Wizard of Wor
    Game Boy: Wario Land
    NES: Super Mario Bros 3
SNES: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
    PlayStation: Final Fantasy IX
Nintendo 64: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
    Game Boy Advance: Advance Wars
PlayStation 2: Shadow of the Colossus (hard choice between Silent Hill 2)
    GameCube: Wind Waker
Nintendo DS: Phoenix Wright (probably the first)
    PSP: Me and My Katamari
    Wii: Mario Galaxy
    Xbox 360: Red Dead Redemption
    PS3: Uncharted 2

Gah, what was I thinking! Of course Pokemon blue over Wario Land, shame on me

Woo, another Wizard of Wor devotee! What's your highest score?

Do hardware revisions count as a new console?

That's probably a case by case question. Like I'd say not for Sega Master System vs Sega Master System II, but yes for PSP vs PSPGo.

Gameboy: Pokemon Red Blue all the way!

One side comment to make; I'm doing this based on stuff I *still own*, not just uber-desireables or other systems I don't have. Will still take a while, though. And why did you have to mention Midnight Resistance, Mark? It's just made my Megadrive post that much more complicated!

C64 Wizball - But I'd need a bunch of controllers as I already killed 3 or 4 playing it when I was a kid.

Oh and that is my final answer. No need for shortlists.

    Sega- Sonic 3
GBC- Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons
    Playstation- Digimon world 3
    GBA- Pokemon Emerald
    PS2- Kingdom Hearts 2
    NDS- Pokemon Soul Silver
Wii- Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
    XBox 360- Skyrim
    PS3- InFamous 2
    3DS- Ocarina of Time 3D

    Atari 2600 : Berzerk
    Amiga 500 : Gods
NES : Super Mario Brothers 3
    PC : Doom 2
GB : Legend of Zelda : Link's Awakening
    GBA : Advance Wars
    SNES : Chrono Trigger
    N64 : Mario 64
    PSX : Final Fantasy VI
    DS : Pokemon Black
PSP : Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
    PS2 : Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence
    PS3 : Metal Gear Solid 4
Xbox 360 : Gears of War
    3DS : Resident Evil Revelations
    Vita : Gravity Rush

SEGA Master System / Game Gear - Wonder Boy III
Nothing comes close the brilliance of that game!

    Atari: Pitfall
    Amiga: Civilization
    NES: Duck Tales
    SNES: Super Mario World
    Nintendo 64: LOZ Majora's Mask
    Dreamcast: Shadowman
    PlayStation 2: Gregory Horror Show
    Xbox: GTA San Andreas
    GameCube: LOZ Wind Waker
    Nintendo DS: LOZ Phantom Hourglass
    Wii: LOZ Twilight Princess
Xbox 360: GTA V (getting my vote in early)
    PS3: Uncharted
    3DS: LOZ Ocarina of Time

So, out of the consoles I've personally owned they would be:

Master System: Wonderboy in Monster Land (Technically you'd get two with Alex Kidd!)
Mega Drive: Sonic The Hedgehog 2
SNES: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
N64: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
    Dreamcast: Powerstone
    PSone: Final Fantasy VII
    PS2: Timepslitters 2
    Xbox: Jade Empire
    PS3: Skate 2
    Xbox 360: Red Dead Redemption
    Wii: Super Mario Galaxy 2

      Bah, forgot PSP!

PSP: Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

Great choices Mark. I get the feeling that mine won't be too different. Let's see.
    NES: Super Mario Bros. 3
Mega Drive: Sonic The Hedgehog 2
Game Boy: The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
    SNES: Super Metroid
    PlayStation: MDK
Nintendo 64: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
    Dreamcast: Space Channel 5
    Game Boy Advance: Metroid Fusion
PlayStation 2: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
    Xbox: Spider-Man 2
GameCube: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
    PSP: Loco Roco
    Wii: Super Mario Galaxy
    Xbox 360: Assassin's Creed II
    PS3: Batman: Arkham Asylum
    3DS: Super Mario 3D Land

Trying not to do a "what is my favourite game" and more of a "what have I got the most time / fun out of, and would continue to be enjoyable if I only owned it"

Out of the consoles I own and the games I own for them...

    Commodore 64 : Bomb Jack
    Atari 2600 : Space Invaders
    Atari Lynx : Toki
Master System : Wonder Boy 3 Dragons Trap
    Game Gear : Sonic 2
    Mega Drive : Sonic 3
    Saturn : Bomberman
    Dreamcast : Sonic Adventure
    PS1 : Wip3out
    PS2 : Jak and Daxter
    PS3 : inFAMOUS
    PSP : Megaman Powered Up
    Xbox : Timesplitters: Future Perfect
NES : Super Mario Bros 3
SNES : Tetris Attack (toughest decision ever)
    N64 : Donkey Kong 64
Gamecube : Smash Bros Melee (second toughest decision ever)
    Wii : Mario Kart Wii
    GB : Wario Land 3
GBC : Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages
    GBA : Advance Wars
DS : Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow

    NES: Super Mario
    SNES: Super Mario All-Stars
    Gameboy: Wario Land 2
Gameboy Colour: Pokemon Yellow (Yeah that's kind of cheating but they are two different consoles technically)
    Nintendo 64: Banjo Kazooie
    Gamecube: Super Smash Bros. Melee
Wii: Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
    PS2: Kingdom Hearts
    PS3: InFAMOUS
    Xbox: Halo 2
    360: Minecraft

I assume this is only from the systems we personally owned, or at least had reasonable access to?

    In which case:

    Intellivision - Q*Bert
    Atari 7800 - Karateka
Atari Lynx - Shadow of the Beast (this was a tough choice)
Nintendo Gameboy - The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
Super Nintendo - Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
Playstation - Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
    Dreamcast - Soul Calibur
    Gamecube - Metroid Prime
    Xbox - Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath
Wii - Xenoblade Chronicles or Donkey Kong Country Returns (I can't split them)
    Playstation 3 - Mortal Kombat (aka MK9)
    PC (DOS) - Pinball Fantasies
PC (Win95 onwards) - Starcraft or Unreal Tournament (again I can't split them)

    Oh man, decisions, decisions

    Atari: Pitfall
    Gameboy: Wario Land
SNES: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
    PSone: Final Fantasy VII
    PS2: Resident Evil 4
    PS3: God of War 3
    PS Vita: Rayman Origins
    xbox360: Fallout 3
    Wii: Super Mario Galaxy

I can't answer this. It's impossible. Don't make me choose!

Oh Mark, what a predictable list :P

    Hmm, let's see...

    NES:
Battletoads is probably the best game I've got for it. Was thinking maybe SMB/Duck Hunt, but nah.

    SNES:
Unirally, one of my favourite games for it. Love the soundtrack.

    N64:
Ugh, tough one. Leaning towards F-Zero X, because it is radicool and also has an awesome soundtrack. Though there's so many others that could go here too. Lylat Wars, Perfect Dark. Actually, if I went with F-Zero...

    64DD:
    F-Zero X Expansion Kit. Awwyeah :P

    GameCube:
Another tough one. Maybe RE4, because that seems to be highly replayable. Either that or Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, because that is cool and also has a lot of replayability, trying to get those perfect lines.

    Wii:
This one's a tough one because I feel like there isn't really much for the Wii that is omgamazing. HotD Overkill would be up there, since it's such an awesome package. Style, soundtrack, fun. Also I love light gun games. De Blob would get a vote in soundtrack terms too. Or I could go with Little King's Story, because that game is fricken amazing and yet I still have hardly played it.

    GB:
Donkey Kong '94. Easily one of the best games for the system, and one of the best of the few I own. Although X is hard to find and I have a soft spot for simple 3D games like that.

    VB:
Waterworld! Jk. I like Red Alarm because of aforementioned simple 3D/wireframe love, but Jack Bros is probably the best game on the system.

    GBC:
Don't really have much here. DKC, the Zelda Oracle games, Pokemon Pinball. I'd probably go with Pinball, because that would last me the longest.

    GBA:
Oh man, tough city. I'd be heavily leaning towards Metroid Zero Mission, that's one of my most favourite games of all time. Although then there's Warioware, and Warioware Twisted. Maybe would have to go with Twisted possibly, because it's ridiculous and fun. Plus there's a lot of variety in there.

    DS:
So many amazing games. So few coming to mind. EBA would be up there, though I have played the hell out of that a fair bit already. Wish there was an EBA2 like they had planned. Really struggling to think of anything though, which is annoying.

    3DS:
Heh :P Um. Kid Icarus is pretty cool I guess? Actually I'll go with Ghost Recon. I sunk 60 hours into the campaign of that and loved it, haven't even touched the skirmish missions yet.

    Oh, and 360 I guess:
Eh who cares :P I guess I've got RDRGOTY now, and haven't played it yet. May as well take that one on. Otherwise I guess Bomberman '06.

Oh man, I just remembered that SMB3/SMA4 is on GBA. Are peripherals and second systems allowed? If they were then it would be a contender too, so long as I could take a second GBA, my e-Reader and set of SMA4 cards with it. Best version of the best Mario game ever.

    Atari 2600: Asteroids
Sega Master System: Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Atari Lynx: Crystal Caves (think that's what it was called. It was a semi-isometric puzzle-shooter where you played as a gem-mining robot).
    Gameboy: Pokemon Yellow
Playstation 2: The Simpsons: Hit and Run
    Xbox: Jet Set Radio Future
    NDS: Trauma Center
    Xbox 360: Fallout: New Vegas
PS3: Heavy Rain (I haven't played a lot of PS3 games, can you tell :P)
Wii: Excite Truck (you can see how long my interest in the Wii lasted too)

Oh, I forgot my PSP too. The only PSP games I've played through were Loco Roco and Lemmings, and Loco Roco was just so goddamn adorable.

As a fun hypothetical, I'll do a list for games I played on other consoles that I never owned:

      NES: Duck Tales
      Sega Mega Drive: Earthworm Jim
N64: Lylat Wars aka Starfox 64
      Dreamcast: Samba Di Amigo

I have palyed games on the PS1 but don't remember any particularly worth ones by name - like, I know played Banjo Kazooie, but would I want to limit myself to ONLY Banjo Kazooie? Nope. Same goes for the hanful of games I played on the SNES, and various Coleco and Amiga games I played years and years ago.

Also, I see some people adding PC games to the list and subdividing it be DOS-era and the more modern windows era, which I think is perfectly legit.

MS-DOS PC: F117-A Steath Fighter 2.0 (Nighthawk). I still have this on floppy somewhere, but it won't run properly on a modern PC, even using DOSBox. It is truly a lost treasure.
Windows-PC: I hate to buck the trend of people loving on Monkey Island 2, but I preferred Monkey Island 3.

It tears me up that I couldn't include Space Quest 3 or 5 on my PC list, but if I had a properly working copy of Stealth Fighter... man.

Based on consoles and games I actually own, I tried to pick stuff that lasts for a while and has re-playability

    Commodore 64 - Sid Meier's Pirates!
    Atari 2600 - HERO
Master System - Wonder Boy in Monster Land
    Megadrive - NBA Jam
    Snes - Secret of Mana
    Gameboy - Double Dragon
    N64 - Banjo Tooie
    PSOne - Soul Blade
    GBA - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
    PS2 - GTA San Andreas
    Gamecube - Wind Waker
    DS - Chrono Trigger
    PSP - GTA Chinatown Wars
    Wii - Super Mario Galaxy
    360 - Forza III
    PS3 - Dark Souls
    3DS - Mario Kart 7

Good list, I'm devastated I had to choose between Secret Of Mana and Terranigma

    This is a tough one.

Mega Drive: Sonic 3 & Knuckles (two games but let's face it, it's really one)
    Gameboy: Tetris
    Nintendo 64: Super Smash Bros
    Playstation 2: Kingdom Hearts
    Gamecube: Wind Waker
    Xbox 360: Rock Band 3
    Playstation 3: Journey
    Wii: Mario Galaxy
DS: Trauma Center: Under the Knife
    3DS: Mario Kart 7
    PC: Starcraft 2
