'Minecraft Guy' Isn't Supposed To Be A Guy -- Or A Girl, Says Game's Creator

Though jokingly given the name "Steve", Minecraft's lead character is supposed to be gender neutral, said the game's creator. All living things in the game are supposed to be gender neutral, in fact.

Markus "Notch" Persson, musing about gender in the low-resolution world he created two years ago, admits that calling the protagonist "Minecraft Guy" for lack of a better term, and then "Steve" in humorous response to a question, definitely pegs the character as a male. But that wasn't his original intent.

"The human model is intended to represent a Human Being," Notch wrote today. "Not a male Human Being or a female Human Being, but simply a Human Being. The blocky shape gives it a bit of a traditional masculine look, but adding a separate female mesh would just make it worse by having one specific model for female Human Beings and male ones. That would force players to make a decisions about gender in a game where gender doesn't even exist."

(He later clarified over Twitter that, yes, that is a goatee on the Human Being's face. "The default skin (and the unofficial name) is unfortunately male. I regret this. The model is genderless.")

Going further, Notch explains that all other living things in the game are genderless, if not exhibiting the traits of both genders. "The chicken/duck/whatevers have heads that look like roosters, but still lay eggs," he says. Cows have both horns and udders (though he notes there are some breeds in which female cows have horns).

Notch acknowledges that Minecraft can take this middle-of-the-road approach because of its deliberate, pixelated artistic style. "The better your graphics are, and because of how quickly the human mind tries to identify the gender of other humans, you are going to have to make a decision as a developer about gender," Notch said. He didn't want to force players to make decisions about gender in a game where that didn't even exist.

Thus, as there is only one gender to choose from, "every character and animal in Minecraft is homosexual," Notch said. "Take THAT, homophobes!"

Should have just kept his mouth shut. Just revealed himself as a massive idiot.

    He has a beard.

      Like, a wife?

No, like another gender neutral character in a fake relationship to mask his/her choice of lifestyle.

He's called Minecraft Guy, or Steve. He has a beard. He's male.

"In a desperate attempt to stay relevant, Notch claims genderlessness and jumps on another bandwagon. Carefully forgets that at any stage he COULD have enforced a non-gendered protag, but chose not to".

    What an absolute tool.

Does this seriously matter? Like, really? Are there people out there who are genuinely offended that the character in Minecraft is obviously male, regardless of what Notch says.

My skin for minecraft is a wookie.

Why does Notch keep saying stupid shit? Just for the hell of it? The things he announces are getting constantly more stupid and unimportant.

He's just spewing whatever comes to mind here.
At any point he could have changed the default skin. It can be done within 15 minutes, I've done it.

Absolutely. My 8 year old son does this regularly. Started when he was 6.

IN THE END WE ARE ALL HUMANS. REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU HAVE A CUCUMBER OR AXE WOUNDS. EVERYONE LOVE EVERYONE

Why is wounds plural? Or am I not getting the image correctly?

he should've used communities mascot as a reference for his human.

Notch *sigh* You idiot... learn what homosexuality is before you open your mouth you bloody idiot...

I believe you are in the wrong here.

Not at all, homosexuality only happens when a dual reproductive organism, m/f chooses to go against the biological strain and go for its own gender. In the case of a species going for itself, that would not be homosexual, that would still be 'straight'. Not wrong at all.

Do you become less human even if you have been attacked by axes numerous times? Nor if you have only one vegetable, or many.

From the mouth of an 8 year old boy:

"He looks like a boy. He has a name called Steve. He's a boy."

Sorry Notch, your main character is male dude.

i believe you spelt the name wrong. it isn't 'steve' its 'steve?'
