Razer Making Non-Star Wars Version Of Its Fancy Star Wars Keyboard, And The LCD Panel May Actually Be Useful This Time

Not so long ago, in a galaxy that's right here actually, there was this Star Wars-themed keyboard from Razer. It boasted not only a number of impressive features for a keyboard, but also a big ol' tie-in to a now-troubled MMO.

Want the features without the branding? Razer's got you covered.

Razer announced the new keyboard, the Deathstalker Ultimate, at Gamescom this week in Germany. The Deathstalker features the same chiclet-style keys as its Star Wars branded sibling, and also the same major gimmick. That is: where a normal keyboard has a number pad, the Deathstalker Ultimate has a touch-responsive LCD panel that can perform a wide array of functions. Including pretending to be a number pad, if that's your thing.

While the programmable touchscreen hasn't necessarily added much to the keyboard so far, Razer also announced that the software development kit for SwitchBlade UI — that panel — is now available. The SDK will allow anyone with the requisite skills (C++ and C Sharp programming) to make apps that will run on the keyboard, and perhaps make its LCD panel more broadly useful.

That's right: here in 2012, even your keyboard needs to be constantly running apps.

The good news is, the touch, feel, and responsiveness of the Star Wars version were great, and the non-Star Warsy edition will be available for purchase next month. The bad news is, it'll cost you $US250. Alas.

Sounds awesome. Looking forward to some of the open source apps people create.

If you could get that LCD panel as a separate add on, I would buy one for sure! Also personal opinion it would be much more suited to the left hand side for a desktop situation, as pointed out on a previous article about it, it really only seems to work like that on a laptop.

Thanks for calling me retarded, nice to see there are still arseholes about.

Sorry but the design still seems stupid to me, why put a LCD screen on the right-hand side right where the mouse is, that's just going to be a bitch to use in and out of games.

Don't you currently have a Num-Pad there on your keyboard? It shouldn't make a difference unless you want to us a num-pad.

Not useful as the lcd is still on the wrong side...

Woo! Lucky I'm left handed ^_^
Actually... no, it still seems out of place. Well that sucks.

    $250 is pretty steep.
I've recently discovered Roccat. They make gaming gear just liker Razer, and it's german!
http://power-grid.roccat.org/ this is a link to their new phone app. It basically does what the razer one does but with a touchscreen you already own.
and the app is free and can be used as an add-on. Their next products will include built in docks for smartphones for better integration. I highly recommend having a look...
