Rise Of The Triad Returns This Year, Thanks To Major Remake

Apogee Software's mid-1990s cult-classic first-person shooter Rise of the Triad is coming back, with the help of the Danish studio that remade Duke Nukem 3D. The new Rise of the Triad will be developed by Interceptor Entertainment and Apogee and will be out as PC download through Steam later this year.

The official bullet points from the official press release:

  • Step into the shoes of the H.U.N.T. (High-Risk United Nations Taskforce) with five unique characters, each with different play styles.
  • Blast through over 20 of levels of explosive single-player action.
  • Unique multiplayer maps bring back all the fun and excitement of classic ROTT.
  • The full arsenal of over-the top weapons is back, including the Flamewall, Firebomb, Split Missile, Drunk
  • Missile and, of course, the Excalibat!
  • The maniacal modes return, too, with God mode, Elasto mode, Mercury mode, Shrooms mode and everyone's favourite, Dog mode!
  • Build your own levels, mods and share them with Valve's Steamworks.
  • Offline single-player and multiplayer allows for instant action.
  • Find tons of secrets, collectables, special events and hidden areas to explore.
  • Get more than 100 achievements to add to your score, which is tracked on our worldwide leaderboard and stat-tracking system.
  • ROTT is bloodier and more ludicrous than ever, with full character and enemy dismemberment.
  • The iconic original soundtrack has been completely re-forged in the fires of heavy metal!
  • Nostalgia abounds with the option to play with all the original sounds and music.
  • Built on fully-licensed Unreal Engine 3 technology, ROTT will run on low-end PCs and push high-end PCs to their limits!

They're not calling it a remake, but that it, at its core, what this is: the original campaign remade with some tweaked levels that aren't identical to the old ones, added features and expanded multiplayer.

AWESOME. I enjoyed this game very much back in my Doom, Duke 3D days... Good to see the oldies getting a revamp. Now if we could only get a Blood 3...

YES! please can we have a blood 3!!

Blast from the freakin' past, man. My brother and I played this a whole lot.

God fucking yes... i have been waiting for this game for years now.

    I didn't know Duke 3D was remade

Interceptor started it, got approval from Gearbox, but then canned it. it was also meant to be free... I guess wanting to actually get paid for work had something to do with it, i mean i dont blame them.

        Ah, cheers for that

Yeah I was gonna say I thought that remake got stopped (Gearbox/2K should've picked it up and made it official) this article makes it seem like it was released!

I have my doubts about this, given how much I adored the original ROTT years ago, but the trailer makes it look... ok.

So this is probably a more obvious reason that they stopped working on the free remake of Duke Nukem 3D (Reloaded). I was actually looking forward to the Duke3D remake more than DN-Forever...

I remember the best thing about this game was trying to exploit the elevators to jump over the fence and out the game world.

I hope it's going to have the holiday specific skins / models...

As long as Dog mode is in it gets my vote.

Interesting trivia...the original ROTT was built on a modified Wolfenstein engine.

An even more interesting fact that ROTT was supposed to be an expansion pack for Wolfenstein 3D but id severed ties with Apogee so they can self publish Doom, hence the reason why the enemies look like Nazi's.

I never understood what the Triad was, I thought triads were asian gang?

Cant wait for the ludicrous gibs... Asbestos armour, oooo so itchy!

Given the original itself was nothing brilliant, this can only be decent :) I look forward to it :)

THIS is a good idea, taking an average/bad property from years back and trying to improve it. No qualms there. It's when you try to perfect perfection (syndicate) and screw the pooch... that's bad...

I completely agree. Applies to films too. Why remake Total Recall or Robocop and probably screw them up, when you can remake Missing in Action and not lose.

Mcgarnical absolutely. One of the best remakes still stands as The Fly. They took a crappy 50s movie, turned it into something scary as crap. Awesome movie... awesome way to do it.

syndicate 4 player coop was awesome

Most games in a social atmosphere are amplified just by their social nature. My mate and I have endless fun in Saints Row 3 just dicking around like jerks! Hell, we even love playing games like DayZ where face it, it's got bad controls, terrible hit locations, AWFUL inventory controls... everything about the game in term of controls etc is subpar. Yet we love it immensely. It's its social nature that makes it much better.

As long as the "on the knees" executions are in I'll check this one out. It's what I remember the most from the old version.

That's the first time I've ever seen someone animate dual-wielded reloading. Nice. Usually it's done off screen.

I didn't realise Apogee were still going?

Its a spinoff company that is using the Apogee Software name, 3D Realms is legally known as Apogee Software.

At least Gearbox can't get in the way and stop this from getting released. ROTT was great back in the day. My interest is certainly piqued at this point.
