The Neo Geo Returns This December (For $200!)

Remember in January how everyone got a little excited about the official return of the Neo Geo brand, via a new handheld system called the NEOGEO X GOLD? Yeah, well, it might be time to get a little less excited.

Because the thing costs $US200.

That's right. For a small handheld that plays a bunch of games that are 15-20 years old, you'll be paying almost as much as you would a modern system from the likes of Sony or Nintendo.

I mean, sure, it comes with a bunch of pre-installed games (see below), but $US200? They're crazy.

Confirming specs first listed earlier this year, the NEOGEO X GOLD will boast a 4.3" LCD screen, a headphone jack, an "expandable game card slot" and...that's it. There's mention (and a picture) of a compatible arcade stick and a docking station (that's shaped like an old Neo Geo console and can output to a TV), but no word on how much they cost, or whether they're bundled in for the $US200 asking price. Since the official press release fails to mention either of those seemingly vital pieces of information, I'm expecting they're pricey extras, though their inclusion in the deal is the only reasonable justification for that price.

(We've asked for confirmation on the peripherals status and will update if we hear back).

The pre-installed games on the handheld are:

3 COUNT BOUT

LEAGUE BOWLING

ART OF FIGHTING II

MAGICIAN LORD

ALPHA MISSION II

METAL SLUG

BASEBALL STARS II

MUTATION NATION

CYBER LIP

NAM 1975

FATAL FURY

PUZZLED

FATAL FURY SPECIAL

REAL BOUT - FATAL FURY SPECIAL

THE KING OF FIGHTERS '95

SAMURAI SHODOWN II

KING OF THE MONSTERS

SUPER SIDEKICKS

LAST RESORT

WORLD HEROES PERFECT

It'll be out worldwide on December 6.

Comments

If this had the full catalog then maybe. They would sell a lot more if they did this.

Damn straight. Would buy on sight if it had all the games. I smell downloadable games...

Yeah, I wouldn't even consider a NeoGeo unless I could get Last Blade 2, Metal Slug X and Mark of the Wolves.

Those are some seriously wicked games that preinstalled. It's a great deal in my opinion.

If it did indeed have the full range of games I would be happy to turn over my $200. Since it does not, I am not.

Also, Luke didn't read the press release very well.

"The NEOGEO X GOLD entertainment system comes complete with the NEOGEO X Station, the NEOGEO X Handheld with 20 pre-loaded NEOGEO classic titles, and the NEOGEO X Joystick."

It's the whole package for $200. Which makes it a much more interesting proposition. Still need to know how they plan to sell other games for it though.

Quite cool, thanks for reading NegativeZero. Still, Sengoku 3 or bust :P

How many bad, misinformed, stupid or just plain wrong articles is it going to take for this chump to get fired?

Man I wish I had that kind of job security.

Yes but then you would also be an international joke that can not scrape together $200.

I would be mad if a can play my mvs games on them like garou. lastblade 2.
Kof 98. Metal slug . Art of fighting

Cheaper alternative to an aes system and games

Is it actual SNK hardware or emulation?

LEAGUE BOWLING? How can I not purchase th-zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Luke - are you not embarrassed by your lack of ability? Read - when copying and.pasting. kotaku should be ashamed of this worldwide joke instead of deleting legitimate comments about him.

What's wrong with the price for what you get? I think its quite reasonable. But I am and Neo Geo fan boy, so for me $200 is actually cheap for Neo Geo, I'll probabbly will get 2. Neo Geo forevea, why were you taken away from us, u were song young :)
