Australian Pricing And Release Date For The New PlayStation 3 Confirmed

Earlier today Sony announced that a new PlayStation 3 model, 25% smaller and 20% lighter than the current models, has been released. Sony Australia has just confirmed these consoles will be released in Australia, and informed us of the price you’ll be paying locally.

The console will be available on September 27, with the 500GB model retailing at $399.95, while the 12GB version is on-sale at the cheaper price of $299.95. Australia will not be receiving the 250GB model.

Both the charcoal black and classic white colours will be available at launch, and EB seem pretty quick on the ball — it’s already offering trade in prices and bundles with the new console.

well at the moment i’m using 11gb of my 320gb slim….so…don’t think i’ll worry about the 500gb…

    It’s 12GB, with the option of purchasing an official 250GB HDD (or any other compatible one). Think along the lines of the 4GB Xbox.

    Australia will be getting a model that has 12GB of flash memory, you will still have the ability to drop a hard drive in later, but will lose access to that 12GB

      Really? Kinda sucks. My 360 was a 4GB version. When I bought a HDD for it I could still access the 4GB storage.
      
      Although, for the extra $100 you pay for the 500GB version you could buy a 750/1TB HDD and drop it in.

  How is a $300 console wallet friendly!!? I thought by this point in the cycle they’d be aiming for $200 (please note I bought a 360 Arcade in 2009 for only $200, surely this 12GB has similar functionality)

    If Sony were in a financial position to reduce the price they would. They know it’s the one thing holding back sales, but they just can not afford to do it. The reason the PS2 got so cheap was there were 150 million of them, which meant lots and lots of money in games and accessory sales. Sony do not have that luxury, so the pricing model is different.
    
    Maybe the PS4 won’t be so god damn expensive and have crappy ports of games in its first two years and it will take off, allowing Sony to have a 200 dollar PS4 in 2018.

      Yeah you’d think when it comes to PS4 they’d drop all the extra processors seeing as very few devs ever got the most out of them.
      
      I’d consider getting a PS3 (they’ve got lots of games I’d like to try) if they got to $200, but anything over is just unneccessary given I’ll still got tonnes of unfinished games on the 360.
      
      Frankly if the were trying to pitch themselves as an alternative to buying a Wii U then they’ve failed dismally.

This… is basically the same price? The RRP of the 12gb model is $50 less than the 160gb was a month ago. What is the advantage of the new model if not that it is cheaper???

  I guess at least it allows you to choose your own HDD option – obviously you couldn’t really go very far with just the 12Gb.
  
  But you can get a 320Gb 2.5″ SATA drive for under $60, so you could buy the 12Gb and drop in one of those and it’d work out pretty close to the price of the current 160Gb but with a 320Gb drive.
  
  Likewise, if you wanted more than 500Gb, you could buy the 12Gb version and buy a 1Tb drive for around a hundred bucks. So you could actually put together your own 1Tb version for the same price as the out-of-the-box 500Gb version.

  Manufacturing methods change and become cheaper. Companies usually lose money on the sale of consoles, so if they can manufacture them in a way which is cheaper and they can start making a profit, I think that is a pretty good reason. Don’t you?

  Exactly what I was thinking. Kmart/Target had the 250GB’s pretty cheap not long ago, less than $250, and yet the RRP on the 12GB is $299? Considering the 4GB Xbox 360 Slim was available for $180 for around 1-2 months before/after Christmas, Sony have taken the wrong road to get to the cheaper option.

As for JB deals
12GB is $259 on its own or $299 with NFS hot pursuit, MIB3 bluray and HDMI cable.
500GB is $399 with Fifa 13, NFS hot pursuit, MIB3 bluray and HDMI cable

250GB – $269 (Uncharted 3/Dust 514 Bundle), this is the U.S. price so we pay $30 more get no games and a tiny useless 12GB storage that’s properly not even enough to install BF3 and DLC or plain vanilla GT3.
Makes Nintendo’s aussie tax seem reasonable.
