Company Of Heroes, Homeworld Studio Making More Free-to-Play Games

PC strategy gods Relic Entertainment look to be moving deeper into the world of free-to-play games, if a number of job descriptions on the company's site are anything to go by.

(They usually are).

They're looking for a Creative Director, Executive Producer and Senior Designer, all of which are specifically tagged as "free-to-play" roles.

It's of course not the first time Relic has dabbled in the field; the doomed Company of Heroes online title was free-to-play before it closed down in 2011.

But that was a conversion of an existing product. Hiring new staff specifically to work in the field implies something a little more serious.

Wouldn't it be a cruel stab in the guts to, after years of asking for a Homeworld sequel, get one only for it to be free-to-play? I... wow, sorry for that. That was a dark place we all just went. I'm actually a little upset now, and am going to go sit down and convince myself it'd surely be something else.

    Bad Relic! Bad!

Dammit Luke. Now I'm upset too.

    F2P does not mean shit

Yeah I mean it worked for league right? I mean in order for you to not have to grind for ages to get more than the standard amount of rune pages, you only have to spend like $20 AU (for 2800, 200 of which are "free"). Then there is WoT which shoe horns you into having to buy heavy tanks or being pretty much useless and why not bring up MWO which while not even released yet I can tell you that an Atlas will cost roughly $25 (4,500 points to buy and with no MC packs giving that amount I can tell you that the cheapest bundle is getting the 3k MC pack for $14.95 and the 1.5k for $9.95). I could also pretty much direct you to any F2PMMO who' studio resides in any Asian county.

F2P does mean shit, I am sorry but it really does.

if designed from the ground up to be f2p instead of tacked on after the fact then it could actually work

Cant think of a single F2P game that has kept my interest long enough to be a good game. Tribes came close but even then I reckon I only got 30-40 hours out of it.

Ganerally, F2P means average game with lower production costs hence shit game.

I was really looking forward to Company of Heroes online - I could definitely see that game being a winner. Still, as long as their foray into F2P is pushed by them and not by their ailing publisher, and it doesn't affect development of Company of Heroes 2, than I'm all for them having a stab at the market.

As long as I can riflespam
