Lots of Kickstarter video game projects come over the transom here every day, a lot of them wishful thinking. So it's rare to see one that is both a great idea and eminently attainable, but that's my gut feeling about a coffee table book celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
If you want a hardback book — literally a coffee-table book — it's gonna run $US125. But you get an "unofficial 240-page encyclopedia on everything there is to know about the classic NES game," says author Daniel Lanciana of Melbourne, Australia. The page layouts shown on the Kickstarter demonstrate some real design heft and a ton of work curating the history of this game and the larger series of arcade and home console games surrounding it. No surprise it's 20 per cent of the way toward its $US25,000 goal with 30 days left.
The money is necessary both to cover the cost of printing 200 copies and to obtain copyright permissions for all of the content in the book. So you're buying more than a book but, then, that's the point of Kickstarter. There are some really gorgeous page samples at the Kickstarter page, showcasing everything from the fighters' biographies to their knockout animations to official merchandise.
