Don't Blame Us For The Boobies, Dead Or Alive Director Says, We're Just Doing What Fans Want

Despite feedback from Tecmo's overseas offices to "tone down the sexuality" of Dead or Alive 5's female fighters, the game's developers bravely pressed ahead in the name of fan service.

"We actually got a lot of feedback from people who were playing it, saying, 'We want bigger breasts. Make the characters more like that.'" director Yohei Shimbori told Gamasutra. "That was kind of surprising."

Ya don't say. You know, I'd like to see bewbs in EVERYTHING I play, and I'm about to play a lot of NBA 2K13. But 2K Sports didn't make bouncy boobs one of the game's presentational upgrades this year -- because it exercised something called creative discretion, which means evaluating whether you want to put swaying breasts in the game you are making.

Team Ninja is pressing ahead with the super-sexy you-want-it-you-got-it line, classifying the jiggle as some kind of a consumer need. ""If you have a solid fighting game system there, there's nothing wrong with having beautiful characters as a layer on top of that -- that's another layer of entertainment that there's a need for," Shimbori told Gamasutra. "If there wasn't a need for it, people wouldn't have responded to the alpha demo like they did, and send us feedback."

"guys, how about you make a good fighter with good mechanics, and not blow the budget on breast physics"

"NO, THE FANS DEMANDED BIGGGER BOOBS, NOT IMPROVED GAMEPLAY!"

Who is this feedback coming from? 14 year old boys? Male gamers continuing to reveal that they believe female characters have no place in games unless they have debilitatingly gargantuan swaying breasts and minimal clothing -_- And people wonder why there aren't more female gamers...

So... and here is a valid question I believe: As a male gamer, why do I WANT more female gamers? It doesn't seem like this is really a concern for anyone except people who sell games.

Whilst this industry needs to cater more for women, it can get a bit absurd when you heap shit on a single game for not doing enough. Some games, like DoA, are the equivalent of a lads mag. It doesn't make sense to ask the devs to cater more for women, because its targeted at a specific segment.

Playing games is a way for me to forget about boobies for half an hour and focus on other things like violence. Putting boobies in games is disorientating.
My heart says gimmi the boobies, my brain says please don't distract me with the boobies.

just wondering, is ayane and katsumi still 16? wasn't that why norway (or some other country) banned it cause it sexualises teens?

The game's set a couple of years later, so all the characters are "legal".

DOA boobs are now more than fanservice; it's a way for them to differentiate themselves from the competition. It's a fighting game with boobs, and they are proud of it.

    *slow clap*

It doesn't sound like the gameplay is suffering because of it, so who cares?

With the amount of effort spent on the jiggle physics, I'd argue the rest of the graphics have probably suffered for it.

        Why do the graphics matter?

I'm married, conservative and I like it, it s not like their real people, it's a game!

“We actually got a lot of feedback from people who were playing it, saying, ‘We want bigger breasts. Make the characters more like that.’” director Yohei Shimbori told Gamasutra.

No-one surprised that their fanbase is comprised entirely of teenage boys and voyeurs. If you want to make a shameless, fan-servicey dating sim... fine, keep it as beach volleyball. Don't pretend you have integrity and that it's now a credible gaming franchise.

    >New game announced in a series built on sex appeal
    >Dev adds more sex appeal, cites fan demand

Yes, I can scarcely contain my surprise and outrage :P

I like boobies. I like good games too. Can't see why I can't have both.

I just find it perplexing how here they are basically saying, "you're the developer it's your creative output don't listen to these fans asking for more T&A." but I've seen feminist discussions online relating to games (Go Make Me A Sandwich) where they are saying exactly the opposite "We're your customers, you owe us, change this game."

    Which is it?

Sadly all the jiggling has made me lose interest. Once the focus left fluid animation and turned to bounce after doa 3 it kinda ruined the characters for me

After all these years of essentially the same game, people still think DoA is something to take seriously?

Wasn't it just those who were willing to buy that train wreck of a franchise destroyer Ninja Gaiden 3 that were able to play the alpha? Those people should not be listened to. I hope they let us have an optional download that removes the stupid bounce. I love bewbs (as someone else states above as well), but these are just stupid.

The gravity defying breasts of DOA:XV 2 was freaky, one would bounce one way, the other the opposite ....

I wonder how many people commenting here have actually played DoA5, instead of just judging the game due to past performances. I spent last weekend playing the game and I noted the game doesn't overly sexualise the females characters as much as they did in past iterations. Yes there is content such as the swimsuit DLC but it's entirely optional and in my honest opinion less offensive than the DLC in TTT2 which claimed to be less offensive by including male swimsuits but then blew it by only including one type of swimsuit for all male characters. I actually enjoyed the game and the level of depth they've added by polishing up the engine, I just wished I wouldn't get lumped in with all the adolescent boys by admitting I actually liked this game, and DoA: Dimensions

This ^, me and a mate spent friday night smashing through the story line, yeah sure there is the odd up skirt and in some scenes it does look like the boobs are moveing like a wave over the beach... which i found hilarious and disturbing.

BUT this game is a solid fighter again, much more so than the last few, and a hell of a lot of fun, id rather DOA5 over Tekken any day of the week.

People need to get over the boob thing and realise that it's a solid fighting game and the boobs are just a gimmick I mean come on Tekken has a bear as a playable character
