Guild Wars 2, Log Two: Five Things I Have Not Done In Tyria

My adventures in Guild Wars 2 continue. I've logged in nearly every day for the past few weeks, if only for a few moments. I remain enamoured of the art, and in my sessions I nearly always feel like I accomplished something.

I tend to like play sessions about 60 to 90 minutes long, it seems, before I feel fit to wander away. And yet in those hours, I have killed many a beast, earned many a heart, and explored many, many map markers. Still, though, the game offers much I haven't seen -- and some things, I'm happy to find absent.

So two weeks in, here are some things I haven't experienced in Guild Wars 2, for good and bad both.

1.) I have not played in a formal group.

Grouping is still a little troubled, a week after launch, but the overflow server situation has improved rather dramatically overall. I'm getting the "you have been moved to overflow" message perhaps a third of the time, on zoning in, rather than seeing it always. Members of my guild have successfully been forming parties, but honestly I just haven't needed to yet. I've certainly fought monsters far too big to bring down on my own, but especially in these early days there are always dozens of people around to work with, and a tab of guild chat to keep me company. Eventually I will join dungeon groups, but that hasn't happened yet in large part because...

2.) I have not hit level 20 with any character.

I do have a favorite: my human thief. She's just barely shy of 16 (my others are all in the single digits) and I'm now ready to move on to the 15-25 maps, having completely finished the Queensdale 1-17 area. Her story quests can be surprisingly difficult, though. I waited until the back half of level 14 to take on her level 11 story instance ("Voices From the Past") and it was a brutal mess that I had to take multiple stabs at. I want to level up in order to see more of the world, but for the time being I'm happy to completely fill out every map as I go and take it all at a slower, somewhat less deadly pace. I'm not sure what end-game could have to offer me that mid-game does not.

3.) I have not completed the 13 daily achievements, ever.

I have come painfully close a number of times. But over the weekend, I finally realised that the "day" resets around 8:00 p.m. EDT. For someone like me, who does most of her playing between 7:00 and 10:00 in the evening, that means the day's accomplishments completely reset in the middle of the average play session. I know any hour would be inconvenient somewhere on earth but man that stinks for us US east coast players. In a game that so starkly quantifies every action the player takes -- and issues rewards based on those counts -- it feels unfair that I should be unable to make progress because the game's schedule doesn't recognise when my days are.

4.) I have not reported anyone for an offensive name or problem speech.

It's not that I wouldn't, if I had to; I'm not terribly shy about throwing up flags for the really gross stuff that ruins communities. It's that I haven't had to. Local area chat, on my server, is startlingly well-behaved. The only things I've ever seen in /say are strategies for an event, pleas for a rez, or thanks for a timely revive. It's the most polite multiplayer game I've played in a very long time.

5.) I have not yet tried crafting or using the trading post.

It's a little overwhelming, to be honest. After asking some NPCs about what I could learn to make, I settled on making my thief into a leatherworker. I figured, it never hurts to be able to make your own armour upgrades. But learning what needs to be broken down into what parts, or what I need to do to learn to craft useful things from the recipes I seem to magically have, is more complicated. On the one hand I want to take up crafting for both self-sufficiency and for spare income, but on the other hand the game makes it really easy to be lazy, ignore those systems, and just pop around through Asura gates and get credit for vista views and points of interest, instead.

Still, I'm beginning to reach the point of my adventures where freewhiling along is simply no longer going to work. The enemies are getting tougher, the world more wild. Guild Wars 2 spends surprisingly little time holding your hand at all, but even those shy first steps already lie long behind me. Clearly, the time has come to take more initiative. And if that initiative should take the form of learning to sew... well, sometimes, that's just what MMOs are for.

    as an altaholic, I now have 8 characters, all but 2 are around level, the others will follow by the end of this week. The thing I like most about this game is that despite spreading my time over a lot of characters, I'm not worried about being left behind since there is a plateau. And the thing I really like so far is the currency trader. I bought all 3 extra character slots by purchasing gems using in-game gold and right now I still have enough gems left over for 2 more character slots.

    I'm a little curious of what the game holds for me in the future, not end game, but things you can do alternatively to end game that aren't the standard (PvP, WvWvW, Gear hunting, TP millionaire merchant).

    Just as I was having these thoughts and floating around maps on my level 43 Thief, I was interested in a strange puzzle gate system I found in the north of Harathi Hinterlands. I solved the puzzle (not spoiling the simple part), only to find myself fall through a re-spawning rock path, which would fall on to spikes when my characters weight landed on it, then triggering an insta-kill once I hit the bottom. I tried this twice more, then gave up.

    It felt like there was going to be an amusing or self satisfying reward at the end of it, but I was tired and went to bed enjoying the idea that there still might be things I can do that aren't in the MMO norm.

    Haha, things'll turn on their heads when you start crafting :P I found it really addictive :P

      I have been crafting, it's been exciting levelling my jewel-crafting but leather working has been awfully painful to me so far. Almost 200 jewel-crafting I think, haven't been online today.

      I will admit, I have a dye addiction. I am in love with collecting dyes lol.

      It's true that you can level all the way to the end just with crafting. Which is fine if you want to do that... but you are gonna miss out on a lot if you do that us to go "HA!"

    I was struggling to increase my crafting initially but now with the auction house working and friends able to send me low level fine materials they no longer need, I've been rocketing up the levels. Crafting xp booster also helps XD

    1 hour and 2 class levels and about a hundred crafting levels for both professions later...

    So what this article is really about is how to play a mmo singleplayer

      its really about how you don't need to group up because its designed to be played with people. Just stroll up to an event.

      Not at all. Just that actually joining party's and going on repetitive raids or whatnot is not a necessary element of play in GW2. If we were talking about SW:TOR on the other hand...

    I logged on last night at level 63, did 6 levels through exploring one zone fully, and then crafted my way from 69 to 73 in about 15 minutes.

    I'm nearing level 20 with my main character (think i'm at 16?)...

    of the things mentioned... i haven't bothered grouping either... i have done the daily achievements (once) and i have tried some minor crafting...

    loving it... just wish i had more free time!

    Just hit level 51 on my Asuran Mesmer. Most of the levelling was through map events and crafting (must have gained 20-30 levels through that alone). Funnily enough, I've not even done much of my main story quests. Damn the big maps and my completionist nature..

    I have been doing the same as Raistlan, I play through a certain area get some levels up then just hit crafting up every 5-10 lvls and push myself 3-6 levels higher in like 5-10mins of crafting its awesome im using cooking atm as its the cheapest option and i have been getting some sweet xp from it probably gained 10 levels just from crafting.

    One thing i will say is while yes you can level to max through crafting the problem lines in the fact that you can't aquire half the mats without either money or karma thus null voiding that for either first play through if just requiring money or not being able to do it just by crafting due to the use of karma you need to do the raids fo that.
