Homestuck Kickstarter Raises Over $275,000

Homestuck is a webcomic that takes full advantage of tools the internet can offer. Or perhaps it is a piece of internet that takes full advantage of what comics have to offer.

Either way, it's an epic project that's got more than a few fans. Homestuck has been running since 2009, and over the past three years has evolved into a robust parody of a certain kind of game, using music, animation, and reader suggestions to enhance its story. As its creator, Andrew Hussie, explains:

Creating it was a lot like being the Dungeon Master of an RPG involving thousands of people, dealing with a similar balance of planning and improvisation. Readers have had a lot of influence on the way the story unfolded, in more ways than just submitting commands. The story is really a kind of dialogue between the readers and author. There is always a sense that the story is aware of the individual reader, and the readership overall. Much the way an adventure game tends to be cognisant of the player.

Somehow, the evolution of a comic making fun of adventure games into an actual playable adventure game seems exactly correct. And just as the original story of Homestuck used crowdsourcing for ideas, so too the game of Homestuck is using crowdsourcing for money. The Kickstarter campaign is off to a rollicking start: its end goal is $US700,000 and fans have pledged over $US275,000 in just the first day of the drive.

Less than 24 hours after launching the campaign, and over one-third funded? It looks like Homestuck fans are even more eager than ever to be involved.

Homestuck Adventure Game [Kickstarter]

Comments

It's actually got $500,000 funded at this point. That's more than 70% in the first day of the kickstarter. Not bad, Homestucks. Not bad.

I was hoping this story would show up on Kotaku AU.
I think it's crazy. For so long Hussie's had this potential at his finger tips, and then BLAMMO a kickstarter and a half a million dollars in one day. I can't begin to imagine what the KS will look like in 29 days.

Here's to hoping that nobody actually does the $10,000+ pledges.

Pretty disappointed that the video is HEY LOOK AT ALL THIS COOL THINGS THAT HAPPEN IN THE COMIC and not Hussie explaining the potential game like in every other kickstarter. It's also spoiler heavy, sorta, and explains nothing at all!

The 10 $10000 rewards were quickly taken, so nothing to do about it. If some nut gets the 100000 it would still be fine. The 1 million reward is the one that would be catastrophic, but no one is that crazy... right?

No they're not. Look closer. "0 (10 out of 10 remaining)"

I used to follow Homestuck, but then the plot got too convoluted for me to follow in my half-arsed manner and I stopped. This might convince me to pick it up again - and I'll almost definitely be contributing.

    Thanks for pointing it out!

Good luck, Homestuck is approaching Lord of the Rings in length. There's a hell of a lot to read.

You could watch the recaps on youtube. It's really easy to follow because they change the narrator over the time and there are pictures in the background. I can only ecourage you to watch them if you can't follow the plot anymore and need some clearing up but don't want to read it all over again ^^

$500k in one day. I'm proud to be a part of this fandom. Call me weird but I love every one of you homestuckies. <3 Let's make this shit happen.

Im glad i got onto Homestuck early, would hate to have to start from scratch haha
