Off Topic: What Was The First Album You Ever Bought?

Oh man, music. I love listening to music. But everyone has a skeleton in their closet. The very first album I ever bought was Bros’ debut release Push. I was probably about seven years old. I even had a Bros t-shirt. But what was the first album you ever bought, and what are some of the music skeletons in your closet?

Man, I’ve truly listened to some dross over the years. I used to like the Scottish band Wet Wet Wet. I have bought Beautiful South albums and enjoyed them.

I don’t know what’s wrong with me…

  The Pokemon first movie soundtrack? I had that at one point, which is kinda of embarassing since I think I was 18 when it came out. I saw the movie in theatres. I even remember being given a Pikachu card for the Pokemon TCG along with my movie ticket.

  That song sums up how I’m feeling at the moment perfectly. Oh and yes I haven’t heard that for 10 years probably. So forgive my poor lyrics rendition.

  I have a rule that when I buy a new album, I listen to it no more than twice, then put it away for a week or so before relistening. Whatever and Ever Amen broke that rule. It was in my car on repeat for a month, and I still pull it out regularly. It’s on my desk at work (along with Ben Folds: Songs For Silverman, Banco de Gaia: Last Train to Lhasa and Frampton Comes Alive…)

I honestly can’t remember.. I remember the first album I was gifted for Christmas.. but not the first album I bought. A better question would be “the most embarrassing album you ever bought”.. which for me would have to be the soundtrack of “Beverly Hills 90210” the original tv series.. I wanted the title track to learn the guitar section.. lol.. but to even own that album was a great embarrassment 🙂

Blood hound gang – Hooray for Boobies. The CD was flesh coloured and you could put your tongue through the hole to simulate a nipple.

To my young teenage self this was hilarious.

Oh man….the first album I ever bought was probably a cassette tape of childrens songs given I would have been a child at the time.

I don’t even remember what the first “grown up” album I bought was either. Way too long ago to remember something like that 😛 Possibly Smash by The Offspring, but I can’t be 100% sure that I didn’t buy anything before that.

Brothers In Arms by Dire Straits. Still a great album although obviously some songs age better than others. Must have made a good impression on me, because the most recent album I’ve bought, 25+ years later, is Privateering by Mark Knopfler 😛

Ah.

The year was 1993 and my exposure to music mainly consisted of what limited exposure I had had to my parents music. My mother was fond of easy listening and crooners. She had only begun building a collection of CDs in 1990, shortly after we were burgled and her contents insurance offered new-for-old replacement on her ancient record player that she’d had since nursing school in the 1970s, and her irreplaceable collection of Elvis Presley LPs.
So her modest music collection consisted largely of Air Supply, Roy Orbison, Dr. Hook, and a number of oddbod collections that seemed to have been published as promotions for cigarette brands – for instance a “Summer” collection by Peter Jackson, which had a bunch of down to earth rock songs. I guess it was a precursor to such Triple M complications as “the 30 greatest pub songs” or similar.
My father on the other hand more or less only listened to the Beatles. At least as far as I am aware. He had a lot of original print albums as well as the War of the Worlds rock opera which I spent an afternoon with sat cross-legged on the floor with headphones on. One of my fondest childhood memories. He did gradually replace his Beatles albums with CD collections.
I hadn’t really found “my” music, though. Shortly before my 11th birthday I saw an advertisement for a new CD, and the brief samples of the songs played in the advertisement were very catchy. The singer was rather pretty by my still-developing standards, and I liked the rough quality of her voice as she urgently called the lyics for “Keep Me Hangin’ On” and “Kids in America”, so I asked my mother for that to be my birthday present.

Yes, my first CD was the Kim Wilde singles collection and I listened to it a lot – I think that album is responsible for my preference, to this day, for somewhat unpolished/raw sounding female vocalists which would later lead to an interest in No Doubt, Garbage and P!nk.

I think that was the only CD I owned for about a year and a half. Just after I started high school in 1995 the Batman Forever movie came out and a few of the songs from the soundtrack were hit singles, so that CD became a Christmas present, along with the single of Coolio’s Gangsta’s Paradise from the Dangerous Minds soundtrack.

The first CD I bought for myself was, to the best of my recollection, a copy of The Offspring’s Ixnay on the Hombre. A few weeks later I went and bought Smash, and a few weeks later Ignition, marvelling at how I liked their music more and more the earlier the album was. Despite being their newest fan I was still among those people who would say “I liked their older stuff better”. Of course I still played the hell out of Americana when that was released.

My Offspring phase burned out by the end of the 90s, which considering their more recent offerings, was probably for the best.

Madonna – Madonna on casette. I had just been given a ghetto blaster – that’s right, a ghetto blaster – and I bought this with my birthday money (13th I think) and walked around to the post box to physically post a letter with the thing on shoulder and Holiday in my ear.

I was the least cool kid on the planet.

My first CD was INXS’ Kick, which is having it’s 25th Anniversary re-release this week I note. I am old. 🙁

First was Cypress Hill Black Sunday.. but that was stolen after my house was broken into. My second one was GraveDiggaz – Niggamortis and its still my all time fav album, just for what it did for me as a teenager in highschool, what it represented in hip hop and generally introducing me to Wu Tang for many many years afterwards. They are not the same now but it was this album that got me into this stuff and started a love of hip hop.

First album I bought? I think it was a Wolfmother album, as a Christmas present for my sister possibly. Or was that for my girlfriend of the time? Hard to remember, I have this feeling that the first one I bought was a present for my sister, but I only remember buying the Wolfmother album for that girlfriend… Eh, either way.

The first one I bought for myself might have been the Smash Bros Melee soundtrack that Nintendo Power released. Nabbed that off eBay, mostly for collection purposes since I already had the MP3s somewhere. Though possibly a Zelda soundtrack came before it, I’m only guessing by their placement on my shelf.

First vinyl album was the de Blob soundtrack a couple of years back, another one I already had in MP3 form.still haven’t actually listened to it because I’m paranoid about damaging it.

If I were to go out and buy a “real” album right now, it would either be Screaming For Vengeance or Defenders Of The Faith by Judas Priest. Listened to their discography maybe five times over in the car now, definitely my most favourite band that I’ve found, and those two are easily my two favourite albums of theirs. Don’t know that I could pick between them though.

I don’t think I ever bought any music for myself before I started high school. thing the first thing I did buy was a Triple J Hottest 100 Vol 3 compilation on tape.

First actual album would have been the Foo Fighters – Colour and the Shape. That album got me through the horrors of High School largely unscathed.

Can’t remember… it was either the Pokemon movie soundtrack (surprised at the number of others sharing this one), Bon Jovi – Keep the Faith, or a Spice Girls album that I have little recollection of… I’m sad that my music upbringing was constrained to pop radio and my parent’s rock’n’roll from the 60s/70s – it wasn’t until I was about 15 that I discovered that other music existed. Still love Bon Jovi (unsure if its just nostalgia or genuine awesomeness – Blame it on the Love of Rock’n’Roll is most assuredly both, tho).

Not too sure, but i think it was Need You Tonight single by INXS. It was on vinyl, and since it was on vinyl me and my brother scratched the shit out of it.

Erh… Well. I can’t even recall going into a music shop and buying an “album” or cd of any kind. XD I have downloaded a lot and aquired a lot of physical and digital media from family though.

Well actually I do remember buying cds once as a kid but they were pirated. :3

That for the record would be Pokemon the First Movies sound tack and I think something from Shrek. XD

Am I weird?

My first album I bought was ELO’s Greatest Hits.
What can I say? Dad’s record collection ended in the 70s and ELO was one of the few things he had that I liked.
I remember that I was going to buy it on cassette, but the guy in the record shop didn’t trust casettes, and he convinced me to get it on vinyl and record it to a blank tape. That way if anything happened to the tape, I’d still have the record, and could just tape it again.
I wish I could shake this guy’s hand, because he is the reason I now have a small vinyl collection of great albums that have only been played 2 or 3 times, and there’s some real gems in there too.
I’m really kicking myself I didn’t keep up the practice throughout my cassette-playing years. But I got lazy and started just buying tapes instead. I gave away my 200+ cassette collection about 10 years ago.
