The Internet Unites To Talk About Video Games They Grew Up With

Twitter's trending topics -- subjects or phrases that the social network is buzzing about at any given moment -- are sometimes based on big news headlines. Sometimes they spring from live events or tragic catastrophes, as everyone rushes to make the first supremely clever joke about Kim Kardashian. And sometimes they're just awful memes.

But for the past couple of days, Twitterers have united to wax nostalgic on something quite positive: the video games they grew up playing. For at least the past 24 hours, the hashtag "#VideoGamesIGrewUpWith" has been trending in the United States. Woohoo! Video games!

Some of these tweets make me feel very old:

Some of them call back to the classics:

Some of them are a little bizarre:

Some of them are kind of funny:

Even heartless corporations are getting involved:

Your turn. What'd you grow up with?

I don't know who any of those people are except Gandalf... who I'm led to believe is a fictional character... ?

I'm unclear on why that matters. It was a sample of tweets grabbed for the sake of the article.

Jesus christ. So many children. Someone who 'grew up' with God of War?

    So they're like, 12.

Even setting aside the fact that they're being nostalgic about something that happened more recently than my last haircut, why are people "growing up with" MA15+ games?

YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE PLAYING SUPER MARIO AND SHIT WHEN YOU'RE A KID. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU.

Haha or the nonsensical "LttP and FF7". How!? At what age!?

All my favourite games as a kid were on PS1 and N64 (and the majority are arcade driving games). Destruction Derby 2, Driver 1 & 2, Vigilante 8, Dave Mirra BMX, GTA 1 & 2, Golden Eye, Ape Escape, V-Rally, Rollcage Stage II. Just to name a few off the top of my head.

Quest for Glory 2, Dune 2, Another World, Flashback, and Sonic are amongst my strongest youthful gaming memories.

Ooh flashback, I almost forgot about that! It was pretty ahead of its time i think.

Those comments make me feel so old :(

Where's the the Red Alert!, Z, rocket knight, Super mario bros 3, ecco the dolphin, JUNGLE STRIKE (!!!) etc.

LoZ: Link to the Past & LoZ: Links awakening. the first i remember going to my cousins place and playing the crap out of that game, and for Awakening, i spent many a happy hour in the car with that one.

No reference to any commodore system.... these are twitter people from the year 2000

Bubble Bobble all the way. So many hours parked in front of our C64 as a kid playing that.

wing commander series, red alert, Duke Nukem 1 and 2 commander keen series

No love for Jill of the Jungle?

Jill of the Jungle!!! I loved that game :D

LotR Return of the King was sickballs and I won't hear anything different.

Somewhere in the eighties, Spectrum 48K - cassette: Horace goes skiing, Manic Miner, Jet Set Willy, Arkanoid, Attic Attack, The Nodes of Yesod (still the best game name ever), Underwurld, Cybernoid. Imagine - Play The Game! Come on you oldies! Let's hear your list!

My Master System fueled my childhood so it was Sonic, E-SWAT, Wonderboy, Olympic Gold (Barcelona tie-in ...) and many, many others.
My brother and I would settle disputes by playing Basketball Nightmare.

Really mine would be sim games and RTSs I guess, depends how far I wanna look back. I mean I'd say I grew up playing a whole lot of different games cause I'd still say I was "growing up" when I was in high school too...

Random DOS Games (like elevators), Duke Nukem (original sidescrolling ones), Commander Keen, Sim City, Transport Tycoon, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Command & Conquer (and Red Alert), Total Annihilation, FF7, Crash Bandicoot, Halo. A lot more than those but I think that gives somewhat of a progression of time :P

Ooooh this is hard. Well i grew up playing games on my commodore 64 using a tape desk to load games! Old enough? Also an atari console with a odd tank game. The C64 was awesome. things like Stix, chooper rescue, impossible mission and so on. Then there's the Amiga 500 games. Civ 1, railroad tycoon, pirates, swiv, supercars 2, monkey islands, and too many more awesome ones to mention.

A combination of things. Crash Bandicoot, Pandemonium, Croc, Spyro, and all my Playstation mag demo discs for the PS1. Sonic 1, 2 and 3 and Knuckles, Mean Bean Machine, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, World of Illusion on my mates Sega Mega Drive. Not to mention Monkey Island, Dune 2000, Sim Tower, again on my mates computer. I'm sure there are more but that's all I can think of right now.

    Elite on C64

Ok. I'll show my age, Star Trek on the BBC Micro. On my first PC: Alley Cat, Buck Rodgers. And then things took off quite fast: StarFlight, Elite, Carrier Command, Omega (the programmable tank game), Stellar 7, Nova 9, Warlords, Wing Commander, X-Wing, Star Control, Armada 2525, X-Com. And then Dune 2 happened...

GTA VC, GTA SA. Simply the best.

Grew up on Super Mario All Stars, Killer Instinct, Mortal Kombat 1, Legend of Zelda, Double Dragon, Sonic 1, Doom, Ghosts and Goblins and Battletoads. What a great collection of games!
